Alright, first of all, you'd have to be living under a rock for the last two years to not know that Guitar Hero is the biggest rhythm game since Dance Dance Revolution. But as most people are probably aware, this fall things are going to get considerably shaken up. Harmonix, the original developer of Guitar Hero, got purchased by MTV, and now they're making a new game, Rock Band, for EA while their former partner Red Octane teams with Activision and Neversoft to make Guitar Hero III. So now, fans of guitar-themed music games are in the rather awkward position of having to choose whether to follow Harmonix, or stay with Red Octane and the Guitar Hero name.

First, let's look at what the two games have in common. The Guitar playing is essentially the same in both games, where the player holds down "fret buttons" while strumming a paddle representing the guitar's strings. They both have wireless controllers, online co-op, and downloadable tracks.

However, Rock Band is a little more ambitious in scope because it also includes drums that involve using a controller with 4 drum pads and a base kick pedal, and vocals using a microphone (think "Karioke revolution, another Harmonix game). Players can also opt to form online "bands" (clans, essentially) with custom band logos and avatars.

Also, another difference is the controllers. Guitar Hero III offers a familiar looking guitar controller that fans will quickly recognize. Based on the Gibson Les Paul, the GH3 wireless controller offers a removable neck for easy storage, and has changeable face plates to give you whichever look you're after.

Rock Band on the other hand, has a wireless controller based on the Fender Stratocaster. It does not have a removeable faceplate or guitar neck, but it does have five additional fret buttons for solos (as if GH isn't hard enough already, lol). Harmonix is clearly going for more of the "replica" look on their controller, rather than an openly video game one.

So, we have two fairly similar games coming out around the same time, with one offering more of the Guitar Hero action we know and love, and the other trying to more closely simulate actual instruments. While on paper Rock Band sounds like it should blow every other music game out of the water, two questions loom over the horizon: is it too ambitious for it's time; and will it be more expensive than it's worth? I mean, Rock Band will offer similar guitar thrills as the GH series, but when you get to having 10 fret buttons, you really have to wonder if it'd be almost as easy just to pick up a real guitar. The same question could be applied to the drums, or the vocals. And since the whole package will supposedly cost nearly $300 (2 guitars, drums, and a mic), it starts to come into question how much harder it'd be to start a real garage band.

Still though, Rock Band does sound exciting none-the-less. I personally am on the fence as to which title I will buy, so I'm going to wait and see what kind of reaction they get publicly before I throw my full support behind either. After all, what good is a robust online mode if you can't find anyone to play with, right? I still want to know if Guitar Hero is on it's way out and Rock Band will be the new king, or if GH will still reign supreme while RB fizzles into obscurity.

I dont think any game can unseat GH from its post at the top of the rhythm heap. Price wont be a HUGE issue seeing as you dont have to buy all components for Rock Band; although doing so would cost A LOT.

I think it will come down to 1) Marketing and 2) Songlist

The thing is, with Guitar Hero you only need the two controllers plus the game, which probably won't cost more than $150.With Rock Band there's been talk that just the drum set alone could cost as much as $180, and really, what fun is getting a game called Rock Band if you can only afford a guitar and a mic? If Rock Band really does end up replacing Guitar Hero, I would jump aboard the bandwagon without hesitation (hehehe, pun), but I think that Guitar Hero's more accessable price (from what we can tell) and brand name might keep it as king of the pile. We won't know until both games are out and selling though, which is why I won't be pre-ordering either of them.

Rock Band is an awesome concept, although I think it's going to be expensive as hell. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt since it has Harmonix, the guys that originally made Guitar Hero, behind it. I'm a little weary of Guitar Hero 3 right now since the developer switch, but I guess it would be pretty hard for Neversoft to screw it up.

You'll be able to switch the faceplate on the GH3 controller, just like the Xbox 360. I'm thinking a nice red wood faceplace would look great on it.

wow considering how expensive all the addons are it's almost worth it to buy cheap real equipment to start a real band. at least then you'll have an actual skill :)

i hate it when people bash this and say play real instruments. I PLAY REAL INSTRUMENTS! and guitar hero is so much fun!!

think about it, the songs on these games are impossible by amatuer standards. so i can buy these games and play my favorite songs WITH friends that have never touched a guitar!

so, i think everyone that bashes either game in favor of reality is dumb. and i dont think they should be allowed to argue that point anymore.

...unless, of course, they can actually play jordan, less talk more rokk, or bark at the moon on a real guitar.

Rock Band is not only a guitar game. So, your poll's 4th choice should be changed but it's too late. Anyways, I picked Rock Band because it will appeal to more people with the addition of online multiplayer, as well as drums and a microphone.

Guitar Hero has been going downhill, Rock Band is the new Guitar Hero.lantus

How can a game be going downhill if there have only been two installements of the game? GH2 was certainly a helluva lot harder then the first one, but the tracks are not as good, however that is all based on your musical tastes and what genres you like. Personally I love classic rock, jazz, metaland blues mostly, so the first game I really enjoy song wise but its far too easy, whereas GH2 has some great tracks that I like (not as many) but the difficulty is much more challenging.

Also I love the Les Paul style controller for GH3, so long as its wireless I will not hesitate getting it. My GH2 controller messed up on me so I had to stick an elastic band inside the guitar to get the whammy bar to go up and down properly. Plus GH3 better have online for all platforms, including the PS2.

Rock Band although expensive really seems like it will be more than worth the price of admission. Ever since I started playing Guitar Hero I have always wondered what a GH game featuring drums would be like... and this just seems so awesome. In terms of being able to pick up a real instrument yourself... for the price, Rock Band will be more than worth it. Not only do you get to play licenced music, but you do not need a whole lot of talent to sound good. Rock Band is definitely going to shame GH.

They also stole my idea for the face-melting solo buttons up high on the neck...

Rock Band for me. Developer: Original GH1&2 maker vs. Tony Hawk maker (though GH's a pretty hard formula to screw up, so it's probably actually a wash) Music: being able to get those hard-to-license songs (ie Metallica, Weezer, Van Halen) and master tracks instead of covers.. MTV + EA vs. Activision. I wonder who has more pull with the music industry? :D But yeah.. mostly it just annoys me when a publisher makes a new game off of an IP without the original dev team. To me, it basically reeks of trying to cash in on the name - like what EA did with C&C Generals and Medal of Honor, or what Ubi did with all the console Far Cry ports. That Activision then went on to call Harmonix an 'imitator' was just dumb.

I think for me it's going to depend on two things: 1) what scores both games get, and 2)who's buying them. If Rock Band gets way better reviews than Guitar Hero 3, and everyone who was into GH before has migrated to Rock Band, then I'd be a fool not to jump in with everyone else and start playing Rock Band. But if they get similar reviews, or GH3 through an act of God manages to score better than RB, and no-one is getting into RB either because of price or loyalty to the GH name, then it would probably be in my best interest to stick with Guitar Hero. Like I said earlier, there's not much fun playing a get-together game like Guitar Hero or Rock Band if there's no-one to play it with.

Personally, I've never actually played a Guitar Hero game before, but I'll probably pick up GH3. I'm not interested in Rock Band, because I'm not interested in any of the other parts of the games (drums, singing, etc.), and just want the guitar part of it. I'm not sure which one will end up being the better one, probably Rock Band because it has more stuff to it, but I have the feeling that GH3 will sell a lot more. Not only is GH3 cheaper and I think that the majority will be like me (being most interested in the guitar than the other stuff, so it wouldn't be worth it unless if they canfind other people who want to play the drums and stuff), but also because Guitar Hero is just such a well-known series. Very few games which rely on accessories are successful, but Guitar Hero beat the odds.

Rock Band is more expensive because of all the different instruments in it, that will definitely hurt the game's sales. But what I think will hurt the sales more is the fact that the guitar has 10 buttons instead of 5. I believe that a lot of people who play it like it because it's a pretty simple way to feel like you're playing a guitar. However, adding 5 additional buttons raises the difficulty.

Rock Band will probably sell, because of the company who is making it and because of the fact that you can play more instruments and get "bands" together. It will probably be good, and might even be better than GH3. But personally, I see it becoming more of a niche game than GH. GH appealed to casuals and hardcore gamers because, as some of the best games, it was easy to play and difficult to master. But I can't see as many casuals, or even hardcore gamers buying itbecause of theprice and difficulty of playing the guitar, which I'm almost certain will be the most popular out of all the instruments.

Anyway, that's just what I see happening. I could be wrong, or I could be right. Either way, I'll just be getting GH3 because that's the one that appeals to me more.

Well atm I really can't say, the R. band controller looks nice and the new set of frets if pulled right could really be something also I see they have some cool tracks on it like Paraniod original track.

So I'd have to see more of GH III song list or Rock band gameplay to say but GH better start to catch up...or else.

If people wanna have a band, they should start one in real life. This game will flop trust me. The reason why people like GH is because its actually NOT like real guitar, its way easier and its not the same thing at all. And $300 for a game that is only playable with other people(like you always have ur friends over?). Nah wont work.

Sigh.. and seeing some of the comments about staying loyal to the GH name and such, publishers pull this kind of stuff because it works. If you're just buying the game and a guitar, both games would be in a similar price range. Just because one option offers more choices than the other for more money doesn't mean it's automatically more expensive because you -can- spend more money if you want to.

Does anyone know if the guitar controllers are compatible? It would suck to have to buy the bundles with every new game. They seem to have the same concept both ... so itd be nice if you could use GH2 Controller 4 Rockband. (Yes i am aware of those new hammer-on buttons, but that wouldnt be the problem would it?)

Perhaps one of you knows more?

i read in a recent preview via shacknews that the GH2 controllers would work fine with GH3, even though you're missing the extra 5 solo buttons.

I think someone was saying Rock Band controllers use 10 buttons. But I'm not 100% sure if that's correct. If so, I would say no.

I'm a longtime fan of the Guitar Hero series (since 2005), so I'm moreexcited for GH3, even though Rock Band remains my second most anticipated game.
