Geohot may soon have company while facing the wrath of Sony. George Hotz has had to defend himself in court against the company since the beginning of this year, as Sony attempts to track down all the hackers responsible for the now widely-available PS3 jailbreak. The problem, thus far, has been actually finding them.

According to documents retrieved by PSX-SCENE, the company is pursuing this information, subpoenaing sites like the recently-DMCA'd Github. Sony is requesting "all information and documents related to the use of your service(s) to register, create, maintain and/or use accounts associated with the user names "hermesEOL," "kakaroto," "waninkoko," and "grafchokolo."

Although it's unlikely this legal action will slow distribution of the jailbreak, Sony's actions send a very loud statement: "we're very angry, and we're coming for all you."

If there were anything Sony could actually do to counter piracy or cheating, I'd be all in favor of it (I don't really care about homebrew, so long as they keep it offline). However, I don't think they can do anything.

Protecting their company? Their investment in the PS3? The gaming industry and their developers? No... hackers just claim "Fair use" and they get cushioned by the law... I say burn em all Sony!

They should be focusing on actually fixing the problems caused instead of going after these people, sony should know that persecuting these people will just make them martyrs in the eyes of their communities.

id imagine they are secretly behind the scenes releasing new PS3s shipments with a new security code or whatever in them. Unbeknownst to us. And then they are finding teh people that cracked it and shutting them down to make sure the situation dosent get worse for the 40+ million vulnerable consoles sold. I think they are doing the right thing. If you let the problem go uncontained, itll only get worse.

considering how they have for some time and that other platforms they have had not resulted int this... I would say ignore it.. I look at the PSP as a example here.. Outside of that, you had people with hard modded ps2's in the old days though that is more a different issue.. Its not like this how piracy, hacking thing is really new to Sony and their platforms.

You realize the reason PSP went out like it did was BECAUSE of crap like thsi, right? And PS2 was popular enough to where that popularity could offset the pirates. PS3 does not have that luxury since it dosent have 100+ million units sold. If they ignored it, the platform would literaly die a slow death. I would not like that to happen, so I aplaude SONY for taking this route. Also, this hack is WAY worse then the PS2 hack.

I think if they can catch it somewhat early before the codes get MASSIVELY distributed to a ton of people, they can contain it to the point of it not mattering. Also, as I said earlier, dont be surprised if new PS3s being made now have a new Encyrption or whatever.

If a multi billion dollar company wants to find bad enough trust me they'll find you.

To the people saying 'good luck oressing charges on people outside the country' government are corrupt and especially in developing countries where these hacks abd piracy are rife, the corrupt public officials will gladly sell out/ indict thier own citizens. So yeah if all the people defending these hacks because they are mates with some of the hacking guys...all I can say islay low for a while.

No sir, It is not wierd. It is justice. I really hope they get reamed hard for this. It is BS. It is US, the fair and moral (lol) gamers that will wind up suffering by way of firmware updates that remove features or incidentally brick someone's PS3.

Regardless of feelings, the presidence has been made that they have been quiet in the past. In the end, we just dealing with scare tactics now. Even the main lawsuit has all the workings of a flop. I don't personally care for or against hacking but I stated they have been quiet in the past. What if I said the DS, the 360, the wii or any other hardware that has been compromised died a slow death because of piracy? I mean look at Pc gaming. Its been a hog pog of piracy, game hacks etc for well over a decade and its still going strong. Lets not try to just state something would die here. I don't see what people are to appluade here? That they are scrapping the bottom of the bin to try to stop something that cannot be stopped at this point? Sony is just jumping into a bottomless pit attemping to find a place to land.

This point doesn't make any sense. The PSP just had arguably its strongest year of releases yet, and more on the way. The piracy hurts game sales argument never really works.

However, I would agree with you that piracy is potentially even more problematic for the PS3 as it doesn't require any hardware modification whatsoever and people can now hookup a terabyte HDD full of pirated goods to enjoy.

This is really all just litigation theater from Sony. The internet doesn't forget, and there's no putting the genie back in the bottle.

Only reason this hack worries me is Devs might stop putting effort into PS3 development, meaning less games and worse ports on PS3.

yeah. I just hate how people listenend to these hackers talk about how its hopeless for SONy to combat this, they believe these fools, and never once consider that SONY COULD fix the situation. you wanna know how they can maybe not fix the situation, but help it greatly? Crack down on people distributing the codes, ship new PS3s with a new Encrypted syestem, and ensure that new models cant get hacked this way, and ensure that as few people aspossible can get the existing code for the 40 million plus PS3 out now. they have to contain it, and I think they will.

Yeah. What we know from this hack is only a small number of hackers are truly 'dangerous' enough to pose a serious threat to security breaches. PS3 is compromised, but with NGP on the way, and PS4 probably not far behind, Sony wants to send a message here. If Sony can get their hands on the main culprits and drag them into very expensive court proceedings, they will probably steer clear next time, even if they do get off.

Find a way to do what? Make more scare tatics? Whine more? If Geo goes to jail nothing will change, The hackers won't go.

"Oh snap bro' Geo went to dem jailz bro' What do we do?"

"I think we should give in brospeh, we can't l33t hax the ps3 without Geo dur hur."

You fail to realize that no console has been this bad before. people never really found the source root code or whatever and now that they have it, people dont need to spend alot of money to mod their consoles, they can do it very easily now. that hasnt happened before. Thats why this is more problematic. And again, why is this a losing battle? peopel convinced themselves it is, but im in the camp that SONY will find a way.

Hacking happens alot, Its about time Sony got that though there skulls and just left it alone.

you dont get it, no console has it this bad. Before people had to pay atleast some money to mod their console, and even then they would have to have alot of knowledge on how to do it. Now any yahoo that has a basic understanding of this can do it. Why dont you get that? thats why SONY needs to do this.

Guess you forgot about the Wii in this argument... folks so quick on the Ps3 but even this generation, they not the first one hit this severly. They are the second when it comes to this type of thing. Folks going so gun hoe on this as if this is something new.. Its not though. We dealing with the second in the line of the 3 consoles with the last(360) also having severe problems. Lets not get so antsy now.

[QUOTE="DerekLoffin"][QUOTE="KevinButlerVP"]this definitely won't stop hackers but it just will make some of them think, if Sony catches them their in for a world of hurtXboximusPrime

I hope this dosent force SONYs hand on PS4. I dont wanna buy a new console now, and itll only be met with negative reaction.

PS4 is coming, it is just a matter of this year for the announcement or next (and the console likely appearing Nov the year after the announcement). Same goes for 360, and even Wii. The current gen is long in the tooth, and due for replacement. You won't see it this year, but announcement of replacements this year is likely.

Wii has the popularity to not be effected by this. I dont know why 360 dosent get hit harder then ti does, but its common knowledge they tend to sell more software then PS3, so they have that going for them. PS3 gets hit the hardest here.

I cant really see it hapening for MS and SONy. MS is riding on their Kinect Hype train and SONY is having one of their best PS3 years so far this year.

Still only a handfull of games can be pirated with this really. Hopefully Sony can send a clear message if they ever track these guys down, but chances are they are all in hiding for a while or confident that they wont be found or in an area where Sony can't touch them.
