HL is really amazing. It had weak gunplay but it didn't really rely heavily on it which is part of what makes it so interesting. Except for the last parts of the game where it did rely on it which got kinda boring although using the rocket launcher against striders was pretty cool.

I don't know how some ppl say the vehicle section was boring. It was a nice change of pace and I loved crashing the combine soldiers with them and jumping ramps, wrecking bridge sections as well as fighting the a boss like the chopper on it etc. So instead of being a run and gun FPS HL has actual variety on it, so the gunplay part can easily be overlooked.

I liked the vehicle section too. It was really handy for killing hunters since you could just run into them, and they'd die.

Overall the vehicle parts added to the whole theme of HL where you're trying to escape the city.

I don't get the dislike for the vehicle sections, either. They broke up the pace quite nicely -- and they were also pretty enjoyable, imho.

.

the horrible gunplay, SNOREfest vehicle sections, and sort of a letdown ending are more than enough to not think Half Life 2 is god :| Half Life 2 is a fantastic shooter for me personally, I love the game, it is still to this day one of the best First Person Shooters on the market(IMO), but there are enough aspects of the game that are just...weak and are more than enough to be a turnoff for some. It is his fault. When talking about Half-Life there are no opinions....only one fact......Half-Life is king. That is all.

Well my comment was meant to be taken as a joke really, I know not everyone loves Half-Life as much as I do. One thing I don't get though and it's when people complain that the gunplay in it is weak.... Take my brother for example. He loves the Half-Life games to death but he also thinks that the gunplay in it is weak. How can a person love a FPS game and still complain that the shooting sucks? It is probably THE most important aspect in a FPS. Personally the shooting is top notch. The rather "lackluster" feel of it makes it feel more realistic and satisfying for me. Just like in STALKER, the realistic combat in it makes it a more satisfying and challenging experience. It's pretty hard to explain really but hopefully you get the gist of it. :)

We all know Half-Life 2 is one of the greatest FPS of all time, so really, you don't have to make a thread about it.

because its archaic, and the act of shooting other games just do better(FEAR, STALKER, CRYsis, etc) However Valve is more than capable to make up for that horrid gunplay with great pacing, great level design, thrilling(but scripted) set pieces, an immersive gaming environment, fun weapons to use, etc There are many aspects of Half Life 2 that more than make up for the average(i think thats a better word than weak) gunplay. Because that is what it is, the gunplay is just average and just doesn't stick out as the biggest weakpoint of the gameplay in Half Life 2. Basically while a developer like MOnolith understands First Person Combat better than anyone(Condemned, Fear 1) thye lack the ability to provide everything else that makes a First Person Shooter memorable....for instance the repetitive and horrible level designs in Fear 1.

The thing about HL:2 is that it is still an amazing game, even though it's like 5 years old! No other game can manage that!

HL2 is the thinking mas shooter, those who didn't enjoy it or found it boring were probably just used to the pacing of a game that didn't just throw enimies at you every 1/2 second, not all shooting games should have you firing ALL the time.

This is where many modern games like Killzone 2 and Halo3 miss out IMO, sure it's frantic but you just get fatigue very fast and grow numb to the action. The best story driven shooters (and i must say most of them did start out on the PC) Have big elements of exploration and muted tension (see shadow of Chernobyl, my favourite FPS since HL2).

People who are unable to take relish in figuring out a puzzle or soaking in the atmosphere are players i feel a little sorry for.

BoloTheGreat

Thus, that is the problem with the Conduit, Call of Duty, Halo and many many other twitch shooters. Shooting foes gets repetitive, even if you have a great story. Playing through Halo, I found that only the story kept me interested. Half Life 2 keeps things fresh by mixing things up with platforming, puzzle and a great physics engine

I agree, FEAR's gunplay is outstanding, one of the best ever, but I couldn't finish the game, extremely repetitive and boring.

[QUOTE="tbone802"]It's a good game but I have to agree with the terrible vehicle sections, then ensured I will never replay the game again. I am also not a fan of the silent protagonist, GF is one of the most boring characters ever. tbone802

You just don't understand the point of having a silent protagonist.

You nailed it...I don't know anything really, I can't believe I never thought about it, thanks for helping me change my opinion.

The point of the silent protagonist and what Half Life 2 tries to accomplish (and I feel they nailed it) is they make you feel like you are the character. You get attached to characters in the world and really care about whats going on. Ex... ep 2 ending.

I had played Half-Life 2 on the Xbox, and from what I remember, it was great. I couldn't really appreciate it, because I was younger... but things are different now-a-days, and I am sure that I'll love the Half-Life games in The Orange Box.

You should get the pc version of OB. It's clearly superior and can run on almost all current computers and if it cant run you can get it to run for like $50.

Its a memorable FPS singleplayer wise, but it is not my favorite gameplay wise.. Those would go to ones like FEAR and Crysis which I felt the shooting mechanics were far more enjoyable.. Still a amazing games, and its multiplayers are second to none.

I love Half-Life 2 but I hate the condescending attitudes that go along with it. *ahem* That's just my two cents.
