Half Life 3 better NOT be on Source engine. I'm expecting a brand new mindblowingly awesome engine.

It's NOT half-life 3, it's episode 3......I think it will be a full game this time. Been too long just for an episode.
Pretty much. The point of episodic content is to keep smaller bits of a full game released regularly, like every one or two years. They followed this with Episode 1 and 2 (both released within a year of eachother, a year after HL2), but then they haven't said a damn thing about the series since Episode 2 came out in 2007.
In that time we've had 4 full Call of Duty games from two developers, 3 Assassin's Creed games, 4 Battlefield titles, 2 Batman games, 2 Left 4 Dead titles (from Valve no less), 2 Fallout titles from two different developers, as well as Grand Theft Auto IV and two of its own major expansions (and a whole new GTA V in between a crap ton of other Rockstar titles due next year).
At this point there's now way this is just an episode running on Source. If I was a gambling man, I'd wager Valve used the time to work on other series, while also making a new engine and working on a full new Half-Life title to use on the engine. At this point, the gunplay and mechanics are getting dated, so it would make sense I think for them to be doing that.
