I saw rhe orange box the other day and realized i never played half life before..... So i was wondering, in todays high tech, high budget gaming world of 2010, where does half life stand today?? Is it still a king of shooting games, or is it just a fond memory at this point? Has it been surpassed as of today? Is it to this day still a must play?

I would say it's still a must play. I just only recently picked up the games and I'm enjoying myself a fair bit.

It's different. The FPS genre went in a completely different direction than Half Life 2 and its episodes. So if you are looking for a MW2 experience, HL2 will seem mediocre to you. Ironically, if you thought MW2 was mediocre, you just might enjoy Half Life 2 and its episodes quite a bit.

If you mean Half Life 2 then it´s still better than most shooters out there.

HL2 is simply one of the best FPS´s ever made. The episodes are fantastic as well.

Keep in mind, this is probably coming from console players who started gaming this generation. So I wouldn't take these comments very seriously.

What do you mean, Half life 1 or Half life 2 and its episodes? If you mean the first one I can't help you but the second one is still good. If you liked it then I suggest you should try the episodes.

A good story, solid overall game play, and a nice puzzle every now and then is a lot more than quite a few FPSs can claim today. Where does it fail, in your opinion?

Story is anything but solid, just well told. The puzzles were fun, but became tedious it was only to say ''durr these are physics'' Good gameplay, but pea shooters and combine who don't feel pain is somewhat lame. Also, vehicle sections.

Never really said the story was solid, but good, just sayin'.

Vehicle sections were really the only part I disliked about the game. *Attempts to cloud memory of them*

Its a great game and one of the best fps about to this day, take note that most of the people saying its rubbish are MW2 fans so you should be able to judge if you will like it by if your taste matches theirs :?.

The gun play feels kind of odd now and the A.I come off dumb as hell. But Half Life 2 is still one of the best FPS titles you can play today IMO.

Half Life does not stand the test of time (Though it feels better with the Source Engine) Half Life 2 still looks good, and the storytelling is still unmatched.

Still good. Probably not up to par with top-tier FPS titles like Crysis, BFBC2, and Reach, but definitely can hold it's own among mid-tier FPS games like Far Cry 2 and Frontlines.

It feels like the precursor to L4D, which it is, and that's a good thing. It's still fun. The PC version holds up a lot better than the console ports. Mouse+KB and gfx mods keep it looking and playing great.

Play Half-Life 2 with the cinematic Mod and you'll find the graphics are very solid even by todays standards.

The story is as generic as any other FPS shooter so I don't see what's the problem there. The way the story is presented though is far superior to 99% of other FPS. The atmosphere is also one of the things that sets Half-Life 2 and its episodes apart from other FPS. It's incredibly well done.

If you want an arcadey shooter like MW2 or Halo where it's constant non stop shooting, you probably won't like the gunplay in HL2. But if you're like me who enjoys some slower paced shooters, then you'll just the gunplay in HL2 just fine.

HL2 and its episodes are still superior to most shooters nowadays and is well worth playing even now.

I went through HL2 and all its episodes about a year ago with the cinematic mod and I still feel it stands up to top tier FPS these days. That's just a testament to how amazing it was when it came out.

I don't know about Half Life, but Half Life 2 and its episodes have aged like wine. As far as shooters are concerned, it is the pinnacle of storytelling, and has great gameplay and a great atmosphere. There's not really another shooter like it on the market. I highly recommend The Orange Box, plus you get Portal and Team Fortress 2. You can't go wrong.

TC said Orange Box so that narrows it down pretty well for those of you asking for clarification. Anyway, I still enjoy the games. It's a different style than newer FPS games, but still one of the greats.

ok you don't like it but what new games actually have physics puzzles? Also most fps these days are just war games giving basically unlimited ammo meaning you don't think before you fire, taking away half the challenge. The episodes are much better though.

Yeah, the game still looks and plays great. I haven't tried the cinematic mods, and the last time I played it was Orange Box on 360. That version obviously doesn't hold up as well as the PC version.

I agree that it holds up very well.

gunplay wasnt great. the smg has a scope but you cant aim down it. i remember e3 before hl2 came out, they promised no scripted events but that wasnt the case. i didnt enjoy the boat sequence either.

this is based on my experience with HL2, not episode 2 ( havent played that yet). another thing about that e3 event was when they showed "ravenholme" i think thats the name of the city, it was full of booby traps, but when the game was released ravenholme totally changed. i do love the gravity gun though.

i actually just played through lost coast about 2-3 days ago, and the graphics are still pretty good.

It's form of story-telling is unmatched for games. Not that story it self but the way it tells it. It's not like Heavy Rain where it's emulating a movie (not a bad thing though) but it's using video game assests better. Games are unique because of interactivity so why watch cutscenes when you can just explore the enviroment

I just played half life 2 a few months ago and I would give the game a 7.5. The textures are nice, but the vehicle controls were wonky and the story was boring. I also was expecting more thought in the puzzles. They could've done so much more with the gravity gun.

You've never played HL2. :?

It's a well known fact that you try to insult anything relating to PC or PC gaming (lol not even a minute ago you posted on another thread saying PC gamers only get to play 2 games a year)

Half life 1? Still an above average game, though it starts pretty slow and boring

Half life 2, and its episodes are a very unique and fun experience. Definitely get it. Its only 5 years old? So why would it be out of date if thats the game you're talking about. however, I never considered it the "master piece" others did. Good but not extremely great game as its kind of slow and makes you conserve ammo nonstop. Episode 2 however was a great game, probably the best FPS of this gen.

You're sorely mistaken. If you click my gamertag you can see I played half life 2 and expansions. In the other thread, I was referring to his high graphical standards, not PC gaming.

You're sorely mistaken. If you click my gamertag you can see I played half life 2 and expansions. In the other thread, I was referring to his high graphical standards, not PC gaming.

I'm not gonna say you're not allowed to have your opinion but to say Half-Life 2 deserves a 7.5 while in your profile you think Halo 3 deserves a 9.5 (which by the way has a story as generic as HL2 and isn't even told as well) just shows you're a troll.

You got me. I'm a troll. I'm going to continue sharing my opinion now.
