[QUOTE="Eggimannd"]

[QUOTE="2-10-08"] You're sorely mistaken. If you click my gamertag you can see I played half life 2 and expansions. In the other thread, I was referring to his high graphical standards, not PC gaming.2-10-08

I'm not gonna say you're not allowed to have your opinion but to say Half-Life 2 deserves a 7.5 while in your profile you think Halo 3 deserves a 9.5 (which by the way has a story as generic as HL2 and isn't even told as well) just shows you're a troll.

You got me. I'm a troll. I'm going to continue sharing my opinion now.

It's because you post things such as "Half-Life 2 deserves a 7.5", say things such as:

"The thing is, both of those systems can be bought for the same price as a gaming PC. Their combined exclusives outweigh PCs, and that's why console gaming is superior."

And make threads such as "Why MW2 is one the best FPS of all time" that I don't know if you're a troll or not.

It's very hard to play for someone who didn't play it when it was released. I like HL2 a great deal, but I could never get through HL1 because it just feels very dated. I can see how it would be amazing in 1998, but there's not much there today.

I'm hoping that Black Mesa comes out because I feel like that would make it much more palatable.

The original Half-Life? It's trash now. Half-Life2 is still pretty good, though... nothing special.

Good shooting mechanics, a good story, solid overall game play, and a nice puzzle every now and then is a lot more than quite a few FPSs can claim today. Where does it fail, in your opinion?

DragonfireXZ95

Shooting is ok, story is terrible, new games have better physics puzzles.

Story is terrible? The story isn't even done yet.

So? The story in Half Life is still terrible.

Dude your looking at it the wrong way. Everyone thinks Heavy Rain has an "awesome story" which is partly true but it's too much like a movie (not talking about lack of gameplay just the story) yet HL2 storytelling is better because it uses enviroments and charectars to tell their own story, not some big epic plot.

To me HL2 is the best game ever made. If you get the OB (which any and every gamer should have) Get it for PC. Better community and endless mods. When people say that they hate HL or say its mediocre it makes me sad. Juts like when people say Transformers 2 was amazingly brilliant movie....

In my opinion Half-Life 2 is one of the last great single-player FPS released. Apart from S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Bioshock, Crysis and some less known titles, I dislike most FPSs released today, especially the ones without any form of exploration, with regenerating health, dumb AI and checkpoint based system (basically any Call of Duty and it's clones). Some people call it evolution, but I see it as exactly the contrary. :P

Still the best. All these FPS today are the same crap over and over again. HL still is innovative and unique.

HL2 is a superb example of story telling in a game.

The gravity gun is always fun

It doesn't only last 3 hours like other "modern" shooters if you know what I mean

The atmosphere, music, and design is top notch

The only problem with the game is the gunplay. I mean it's great gunplay, and all, but I wish that some weapons felt better. All good fps games should have a shotgun that makes you feel like a bad ass (the shotgun from Doom 3 is a good example). The SMG is also lame for the most part as is the pistol. The gravity gun, and crossbow make up for most of it though. The gravity gun is my favorite weapon from an fps.

I agree with some earlier posters though. If you're looking for the Modern Warfare experience then you probably wouldn't like it.

Keep in mind, this is probably coming from console players who started gaming this generation. So I wouldn't take these comments very seriously.

It's different. The FPS genre went in a completely different direction than Half Life 2 and its episodes. So if you are looking for a MW2 experience, HL2 will seem mediocre to you. Ironically, if you thought MW2 was mediocre, you just might enjoy Half Life 2 and its episodes quite a bit.

This is probably very true however.

I admit, it's a bit slower paced than most shooters these days. There are puzzles, and enemies will not go down in a single hit. Also, you can't hide behind a corner and magically re-grow limbs. There are even parts where you aren't shooting anything(shocking, right?) and are listening to other characters talk.

But I think that's a good thing. Shooters don't have to be a Michael Bay movie for teenagers, after all.

Everyone thinks Heavy Rain has an "awesome story" which is partly true but it's too much like a movie .

OB-47
I don't everyone has the common sense to fathom how much of an abomination Heavy Rain's narrative was. Which was something that is, in short - insulting. Half Life 2 is leagues ahead of Heavy Rain in presenting a compelling narrative; it isn't a fair competition, Half Life 1 defined story telling in modern video games, and it still copied as a template to games this day (practically every shooter falls back on it, from Halos, Killzone's to Call of Duties). As with video games in general the Half Life games do not present a complex story, rather one that is very compelling in the way it is told, which puts it well ahead of the others - as you pointed out. Heavy Rain on the other hand couldn't even string a decent plot together, let alone tell it's story half as well as Half Life. /rant.

The story isn't incredibly deep or anything, but it is fairly complex. It definitely is not generic. Most people don't get the full breadth of the story because they don't analyze every element in the game. Things like newspapers, posters, broadcasts, etc. all add to the story. However, most players just passively experience these things rather than actively look at and listen to them. If you read the Half-Life Saga website, you'll see that there is quite a lot to Half-Life's story.

Opposite for me. Half Life 2 and it's episodes the presentation, characters were great but the story was just good.

It's difficult to imagine how I would feel about it if I hadn't played it before. But imo it still has great pacing and atmosphere even by todays standards, graphics hold up surprisingly well too at least on PC, the gameplay is simple but very polished with tight controls and lots variety. A must play I think.

Edit
that was for HL2 btw. HL1 as great as it was in its time is horribly dated.

The original Half-Life has shown its age, but Half-Life: Source can be a good purchase if you want a somewhat modern Half-Life game.

Half-Life 2 is almost a damn near masterpiece. The story is told well, the characters are very alive, the AI isn't too shabby, and the puzzles are a nice challenge.

Half Life 2 is still an amazing experience today for someone who has yet to play it. Personally, I can't play it for more than a half hour at a time anymore. The Half Life games in general have little replay value. Also I may be alone on this, but I think Opposing Force holds up better than the original Half Life. That game is under-appreciated.

Now here's two examples for you: 1. The Protagonist for the Doom games never said a word. Doom is now known as the pioneer of FPS'. 2. Most of the characters you played as in any Call of Duty game never said a word. Now, Call of Duty is one of the biggest games on the market.

He's a very compelling character because of the way the other characters react to him, not what he says himself. :)

alive like gordon freeman who does not say 1 word ?

Now here's two examples for you: 1. The Protagonist for the Doom games never said a word. Doom is now known as the pioneer of FPS'. 2. Most of the characters you played as in any Call of Duty game never said a word. Now, Call of Duty is one of the biggest games on the market.

Yes, but that because doom as a entity is a pioneer. But nobody remembers the name of the main character, hell i don't remember it,

That's because he was never given a name, which ended up with people calling that protagonist "The Doom Guy".
