I've beaten the original Wolfenstein 3d, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, Doom2, Halo:CE, Halo 2. I've played Goldeneye, Tribes, Far Cry, Half Life2, Deus Ex, Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2003, Halo 3 beta, and Hexen. Probably a few more of which I do not remember.

None of these games are as good as Halo:CE. Thats my opinion, period. I would trade all of these games for Halo.

Now Halo:CE for the PC was not a good port. I remember when it first came out it did not run well on my computer, and my computer was good for that time. It ran poorly and playing with the big reticle meant you couldn't have precise aim. Not only that but I do not remember there being single player COOP. Which was a huge draw for the original game for me.

Halo:CE for the Xbox is the best FPS I've ever played. Though I would not rate it that high if it had not been for the single player COOP. Really on PC each game is just a single step above the others. Halo took that step and then some, mainly with the multiplayer.

Vylence

See this is how I exactly feel. I played just as many FPSs as you (different ones though. Never actually thoroughly went through Doom and Wolfensteins, cept Doom 3), and Halo, for the most part, has all of them beat.

Hell I can even say I've played Killzone which I bet half the hermits can't say themselves.

Sure, Halo didn't bring what Doom or Half Life brought, but it capitalized on their successes and just polished it to the brim. It's exceptional by all means. Every aspect of it was top notch for its time, and even the small innovations it brought has done widespread things for the genre. The shield regeneration system, the flexible two weapon system, inclusion of vehicles in all aspects of the game. You can knock a feature like the regen system all you want, but the Halo series was good enough for other devs to take note of and put that in their games.

Also, I'm a sucker for good stories. Halo so far has the best. Love Bungie.

Well for me Half-Life 2 is overrated, it get's boring and repetitive after a while (sp), the multiplayer is also quite dull. Half-Life (1) on the other hand was innovative and fantastic to play, the mp part was dull tho.Raidea

Wow, I've found somone who agrees with me. HL2 is totally overrated, but the original HL was amazing.

And I agree with you both :o

IMO, Gamespot's review of HL2 was absolutely perfect. The story was clearly absent, which Gamespot took note of. It did feel like a "Go from Point A to point B." "Why?" "Just Go!" - Game. Gamespot took note of that as well as far as I can remember. But there were many other things that made up for this. The atmosphere was better than any other I've ever encountered in an FPS game. The setting, the characters, the visuals. 9.2...I couldn't think of a more fitting score.

The game is, however, massively overrated (IMO) at other sites; some which actually refer to it as the best game of all time...

HL1 was indeed better.

Indeed, played most of the games you guys are mentioning. My case is a bit different though; Unreal Tournament was the game that did it for me :)

Farcry and half life two were availiable on consoles...Besides naming a game the best fps is a personal decision which, for any intelligent person, is based on how much fun it was. I've played a lot of pc first person shooters (I started playing around the time quake II came out) and I've really enjoyed halo. I'd say it's my favorite fps. Who are you to tell me I'm wrong if I base that on how much fun it was to play?

[QUOTE="UpSwing"]No, Halo is the Best. No question about it.DriftRS

See, here's the problem, checking your posting history, you only ever partake in threads about the 360, which leads me to believe your an XBox fanboy. I mean, I do play games on the XBox, but my favourite dev by far is Nintendo, doesn't mean I start claiming that Metroid Prime is the best FPS ever (and yes, metroid prime 3 will be classed as an FPS).

Some people really need to broden thier horizons and rate games based on the game, not the system it happens to be on.

No, actually I'm just as much a PC gamer as a "Lemming"

Here is my Setup at home....

And Yes, Halo is absolutely the King8)

Actually Farcry was NEVER released on consoles. That was farcry instincts. A vastly inferior game made by different developers. I know, I played it on my xbox. I also played Farcry on my pc back in 2004. Also an absolutely terrible port of the 2004 game half life 2 was released on the xbox. If you played the xbox version and not the pc version then you got ripped off bad. Again I know because I played it on both platforms.

I'd agree. It's really good, but I can bring myself to call it the best. In the end there are just stronger contenders for the crown, and while Halo brought so much the consoles and Xbox, it brought so much less to the overall genre.Danm_999

The "best" game ever is in the eye of the beholder. Halo is a great game. It has rock soild shooting gameplay with innovative A.I. and level design that really advanced FPSs as we knew them at the time it was released. Halo had something most FPSs didn't, open enviroments. This allowed for new gameplay methods, such as suppress and flank, to be used. Very few, if any games did this before Halo. Before you were always forced to run straight at your enemies and hope you could shoot faster than them.

Halo also had a few other things going for it that really set it ahead of everything else. One is the A.I. The smart A.I. really made every firefight believeable. Another is the location. I don't know about you guys, but fighting on a Halo is pretty awesome. Looking up and seeing the ring was just amazing.

One other part that set the game apart from 90% of shooters at the time is the deep story. As much as people say the story sucks, I think Halo has one of the best Sci-Fi stories ever in a video game and the only reason I want to play Halo 3 is becuase I want to see how it all ends. The story added an element of immersion that most games didn't have.

You tie all that in, add amazing sound effects and spectacular graphics (for the time), beef it up with some awesome multiplayer and you got yourself a winner.

Best FPS ever? In my opinion it isn't. It is one of the best, but not the best. In other people's opinions, yes it is the best and for good reason. It all comes down to opinion, and you cannot say one person's opinion is wrong.

WOW....a lot of fanboys in this place...

Actually i think the reason most of them are saying Halo is the best FPS ever is because thats the best one for xbox and thats all they have ever played....

Ive played them and I dont see what AI you guys are talking about, you shot things as they came on your screen....they dont do anything, they just stand in a spot shooting at you...and ocasionaly move to the left or right

Ive played mostly all of them, and i dont even like the genre, they all seem the same to me.....and Halo is the most cliche of them all....."Im a hero and i fight an alien race to save humanity!!!!!" Im glad they brought something new to the table....o wait actually they did DUEL WEILDING AND RECHARGABLE HEALTH!!!

I don't know what AI you're talking about but enemies in Halo duck, crouch, jump over obstacles, roll out of the way from grenades, man turrets, hijack vehicles, melee, take cover to recharge shields etc... The only fanboy is you. Don't make up facts when you haven't played the game which you obviously haven't.

When I was little I only played one game and that was GoldenEye to me that was the best game ever... until I played halo. And how I try to fairly judge the two is when I go play both now. I can play halo SP and MP with friends and still have a blast (i've beaten the sp about 10 times). When I go back and play Goldeneye I can't get into it because the controls are very frustrating and there really isn't a whole lot of depth to it. I honestly played golden eye (the game I grew up on) for about 20 min before turning it off. Halo spoiled me and that is why I think it is the best FPS ever.
