I've beaten the original Wolfenstein 3d, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Doom, Doom2, Halo:CE, Halo 2. I've played Goldeneye, Tribes, Far Cry, Half Life2, Deus Ex, Quake 3 Arena, Unreal Tournament, Unreal Tournament 2003, Halo 3 beta, and Hexen. Probably a few more of which I do not remember.
None of these games are as good as Halo:CE. Thats my opinion, period. I would trade all of these games for Halo. Now Halo:CE for the PC was not a good port. I remember when it first came out it did not run well on my computer, and my computer was good for that time. It ran poorly and playing with the big reticle meant you couldn't have precise aim. Not only that but I do not remember there being single player COOP. Which was a huge draw for the original game for me.
Halo:CE for the Xbox is the best FPS I've ever played. Though I would not rate it that high if it had not been for the single player COOP. Really on PC each game is just a single step above the others. Halo took that step and then some, mainly with the multiplayer.
Vylence
See this is how I exactly feel. I played just as many FPSs as you (different ones though. Never actually thoroughly went through Doom and Wolfensteins, cept Doom 3), and Halo, for the most part, has all of them beat.
Hell I can even say I've played Killzone which I bet half the hermits can't say themselves.
Sure, Halo didn't bring what Doom or Half Life brought, but it capitalized on their successes and just polished it to the brim. It's exceptional by all means. Every aspect of it was top notch for its time, and even the small innovations it brought has done widespread things for the genre. The shield regeneration system, the flexible two weapon system, inclusion of vehicles in all aspects of the game. You can knock a feature like the regen system all you want, but the Halo series was good enough for other devs to take note of and put that in their games.
Also, I'm a sucker for good stories. Halo so far has the best. Love Bungie.
