By modern day FPS, I mean a franchise that is consistently relevant, so Counter-Strike: Source wouldn't count (unless you consider the new patch making it relevant, but I'm talking a series; not just updates).
I consider myself a fairly neutral poster on System Wars, I don't have too many posts but I've been absorbed in video games from a very young age and have probably played games for about 17 years now. I will admit that I do not own a PS3, not because of fanboyism, but because my wallet is pretty light from buying games for my 360, PC, and Wii. I recently built a high-end gaming PC and have played pretty much all the big FPS's over the last couple decades.
When I played the Halo: Reach beta, it reminded me why Halo is such a successful and rich multiplayer experience. The game has been balanced so carefully by Bungie, yet it finds a way to keep the formula fresh through new features like Forge, saved films, and now load outs and assassinations and cross hair bloom. Yet the game is still very balanced (the grenades could use a few tweaks, but that's an easy fix) and very fun to play. I thought jet packs would be the best **** but I found myself using sprint and armor lock much more often (unless I was on Sword Base). Even the grenade launcher is balanced (in the right hands, it's deadly but it takes a fair amount of time to figure out the splash damage). Bungie has nailed it yet again and show how they know how to create first person shooters that are balanced to play online which provide excellent competition and communication with team mates is key.
I can't wait for Fall.
