Single-handedly saved XBOX. It is the sole reason why Playstation has a foil today. An arch nemesis.

Revolutionized console gaming

Before Halo, console FPS was a joke genre, that was second fiddle to others

After Halo? FPS was king.

Revolutionized console FPS control schemes.. The answer to the PC mouse and keyboard.

Vehicle integration into a FPS shooter.. First of it's kind. It was like someone mixed a shooter and a racing game together.

Console online multiplayer/LAN local system link. First game to do all these things, and do them well. The first game to introduce us to foul-mouthed, trash-talking, teabagging 12 year-olds.

Introduced the recharging shield system that universally all shooters now use

2 weapon limit + easy grenade and melee control integration... Creating the ultimate versatile combat for the sandbox

That's funny, I could have sworn that Halo started jocking CoD play mechanics since 4.

Before Halo, there were successful console FPS like GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and TimeSplitters.

FPS wasn't king that generation, since it didn't have a very strong presence on the most dominant console, the PS2. FPS didn't become the dominant genre on consoles until COD4.

Halo's control scheme was previously used by TimeSplitters. And before that, GoldenEye and Perfect Dark had a similar control scheme with two controllers.

GoldenEye and Perfect Dark previously had vehicle integration.

It brought a lot of cool things to the table for sure. Halo 5 gameplay is top notch stuff for me, and a great evolution from what it started out as. Though many old school fans would disagree, and that is fine, for me its for the better because it gives you more options on the battlefield and it fits better with the Supersoldier character.

@Alucard_Prime: Where Halo 5 failed is more to do with what they took out from the game... If the game was released complete, with Forge and all the game types... It would have been much more well received. Instead, they didn't have the magnificent complete multiplayer to fall back on, so the lackluster campaign was magnified.

The first Halo was revolutionary and carried the Xbox brand to be successful. The series in this generation has been solid, but nothing that it once was from what I can see.

halo 4 MP did for sure. adding in killstreaks and loadouts. it's why it wasn't well received. on halo 4 i only played swat and grifball and infection. the other modes were ruined. Halo 5 went back to the roots of halo 1-3 but updated. it's the best MP in any FPS ever by far bar none nothing close period.

There's no arguing that Halo was a revolutionary title not just for Xbox, but for fps on consoles in general.

Calling it the most revolutionary in the new millennium, however, ignores the roles many other games have played. To name one, GTA3. This game had such a large impact on so many genres. No game could even copy it completely.

I'll name another: Devil May Cry. Whether you want to admit it or not, every action game in modern times plays by this game's rules. DMC is the godfather of all 3d action games.

Another (not just in the gameplay dept here): MGS2. Apart from the effects and other stuff many games *still* borrow from this title, no game will even be able to do what this game combined with MGS did -- never ever again. Games do chase it though.

Someone else could keep going with the list.

Street fighter 4 resurrected the dying genre of 2d fighters in the mainstream.

Xbox didn't need saving when Halo released. Halo just made the console successful.

Final Fantasy X and MGS2 did the same thing to PS2.

MGS2 and GTA3 were killer apps for the PS2.

FPS was not a dead genre, even on consoles. Console FPS were rising in popularity, with the likes of GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and TimeSplitters. Halo just came along at the right time. And while Halo made FPS into the hottest genre for Xbox, it didn't do the same for PS2. FPS didn't become the hottest genre on Sony consoles until COD4 came along a generation later.

Halo was a system seller for the Xbox but it did not get that console anywhere close to winning that gen. It did however help put MS console on the map and make it shit loads of money.

None of that however makes it as revolutionary as GTA III or Resi 4. You're acting like console fps games never existed before.

You know you have to dig deep when you're calling out my avatar. I had a Genesis growing up (after having a NES) and religiously played Sonic 1, 2, 3&K. Those are my Sonic memories, not this trash masquerading as Sonic.

My point is true, GTA has always suffered from clunky movement and poor third person shooting. Production values off the charts, sharp writing, excellent soundtrack, nice environments.

I remember playing all of these games around the time when they were newly released. I thought the future was gonna be so cool - got that vaporwave nostalgia thinking about it.

Demon's Souls did fulfill my awesome expectations though, and more recently, Nioh has me excited the way I was back then too.

Flopza, how cute.

Where's GT about now? over 3yrs into this gen and Sony couldn't give a shit about it's highest selling franchise, they've reduced it to a sideshow and calling it GT Sport, not only that it went from a release window to a sometime in 2017, which let's be honest will likely be a 2018 if we go by GT releases, heck maybe even 2019 and will feature a soppy story so it will score well here.
