I watched a gameplay trailer a while back and it looked pretty great. There were some cool features the terrain allowed you to exploit. The controls are supposed to be very intuative and well adjusted for RTS. I hope it makes a PC appearance though. As good as console RTS controls are getting they still arn't as good as a keyboard and mouse. I'm a little concerned about factions though. it looks like the game will feature only 2 factions. The Covenent and the UNSC. That's kinda lame.

Private_Vegas

yeah. it would of been way cool to become gravemind and command the flood. what i'd like to see is a halo shooter, but you as a marine and generally make it more gearsy/GRAW. that'd be awesome.

EDIT: squad based shooter.

Isn't this their first console venture?

Also, I'm worried that they'll try to semi-casualise the RTS genre much in the same way they did with Halo 3. Don't get me wrong,t he semi-casualising for Halo 3 worked a treat making it an even more than regular FPS games, but RTS is essentially a core gamer genre. If they casualise it, it may end up stripping away the depth that regular RTS gamers look for.

I'm not going to start worrying yet. I'm just glad it's in Ensamble's capable hands. Idealy I'd like Halo Wars to do for console RTS games what the original Halo did for console FPS games.

But I'm not going to get my hopes up :P

[QUOTE="musicalmac"][QUOTE="Vandalvideo"] Of course, but any RTS worth its salt has an AAA rating. I don't think the idiom applies to the RTS genre.

I don't think it's genre-specific. While Halo Wars may not be the end-all be-all of console RTS games, knowing that Ensamble is making it relieves me. I'm fairily confident it won't be a disaster, and that it will probably be a fun game (and quite possibly my first console RTS purchase). But like I said, End War still gets the nod at this point as far as RTS on the 360 goes.

I'm not even going to mention Starcraft 2... Because that may make me forget all other RTS games for a long, long time...

Of course its going to be a good rts, its just not going to be a great rts or anything groundbreaking. If this game receives an AAA title I will big extremely skeptical of the reviewers for giving it that rating just for being a Halo game. Ensemble is a long in the tooth rts developer that hasn't made an AAA title in al ong time. Is it possible? Sure, but I highly highly doubt it.

If Halo Wars allows you to play as the flood... I'd maybe not play with any of the other factions. Ever.

Just like the Zerg all over again...

My only wish, assuming Halo Wars breaks into AAA territory, is that you give it a good chance before trumpeting "HALO = AAA blah" ;)

Ensamble has a heck of a track record. I was glad to hear they were working on Halo Wars.

But my console RTS hopes have gotten higher for Tom Clancy's End War now. Total voice commands (that work!) FTW.

That's how you do a console RTS on a console that comes with a headset.

Agreed, and I'd often thought that myself. However, I'd like it if Bungie stretched their muscles and did something outside the Halo universe. Or at least before Halo in the same universe...

*coughmarathoncough*

That's why I'm glad Ensamble is heading it up, because they're solid, and it's not some small or no-name dev team. I'm curious to see what Bungie will come up with.

Its overshadowed by both Starcraft 2, and the newly announced Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2.

An RPG by Bungie... What an intriguing concept. I do admit to liking pretty much ever Bungie game to date (including Oni), though the Marathon trilogy takes the cake for multiple reasons. Which is why I'd love to see Bungie and Wideload come together to make a new Marathon game.

Just not more Halo FPS. Not because they're bad, but because it's perfect. Don't pull a Michael Jordan and come back and ruin your legacy. Please.

I too would also love to see Bungie venture into new territory and a RPG........ Sign me up !

Not many seem to remember this but about 6 years ago there was much talk about a game Bungie was working on for the Xbox that was set in medieval times ( RPG maybe ? ) but they must have shelved it as I haven't heard anything about the game in years. :?

Have you seen videos for End War, where voice commands are the real way to play? It would be the same on a PC if you wanted to get the full experience from the game, would it not?

With C&C3's expansion just out, Red Alert 3 and Star Craft II coming, I've got enough RTS goodness to let Halo slip by the radar.

EndWar looks really shallow in RTS standards. Pre-defined waypoints/capture points? Direct-line movement? It replaces the "single-point-and-click" gameplay of a rudimentary RTS with single-voice-command gameplay. Not too promising, IMO. I'm sure it could be immersive if done well, so it'll still probably be a good game worth playing, but it'll be even shallower and more action-oriented than WiC.

Real time strategy games are for attention deficit plagued Dell Kids that don't have the patience for real strategy games with depth.

RTS is still the dumbed down strategy genre.

Well, they said that there's a lot of depth in the unit selection and uprading, so that's where I think we'll see more decisions being made. But the actual battle itself? I can't see how it can be anything but shallow. You have no fine control over unit positioning, not even as fine as in WiC. They'd have to put in a LOT of AI assistance to make sure your units don't screw up your orders when you try something more complicated than a "Attack-move to point A" command.

I can't help but think you may be assuming too much at this point. All we know is that the voice commands work. We don't know how large the tree of commands really is at this point. And in all honesty, I wouldn't mind a lot of extra AI. That is more realistic anyways. I'd rather have smarter units, than ones I need to micromanage 24/7.

My assumptions about games tend to over-estimate rather than under-estimate the features involved. :P

AI assistance is generally compensated by an equal abundance of passive combat depth, with more factors coming in to play to keep the player's mind busy with decisions. Kinda like the real-time battles of the Total War series. But Ubisoft has never been too good at being faithful to realism.

Well then, here's to hoping the game is deeper than a kiddie pool

I really do have high hopes for the voice command stuff. It was fun to tinker with in the Rainbow Six 3 on the XBOX. I hope they could really make it a viable tool for controlling troops here.

MS needs to stop forcing a genre that's clearly not made and never supposed to be controlled with a gamepad. Playing an RTS with a controller is like using AutoCad with thumbsticks or spreading peaunut butter with a fork, it sucks plain and simple. Not only are you fighting the controls, you're fighting the opponent or AI.

The reason why MS is promoting this? They are trying to entice newer PC Gamers to their console, this is more than obvious. They know the old dogs like myself aren't biting on this, although I do like console games on consoles, just not pc games on consoles. A game like Halo Wars being made NOT for MS's new Operating System Vista? What sense does that make? If they truly cared for the PC as a platform, they would get behind it, which they continue not to do. What an excellent way to show console only gamers how much fun they COULD have on a PC with a franchise they love.

The whole "RTSs don't work well on a console" thing aside, I think it looks like a mediocre RTS at best. Looks very bland. Unless there are some neat gameplay fetaures, it will probably just fall by the wayside and forgotten.

The only thing I like so far from what I have seen of halo wars is the buildings. In some RTS's they look out of place but in halo wars they look like they actually belong.

And of course thats not really important.....at all.

This is strategy..

CoH/DoW are mere Dune2 clo(w)nes... WiC is a nice departure from this pathetic trend...
