The author of bestselling Halo games and novels and co-creator of Destiny is the lead writer for ReCore apparently.

Here is a fragment describing his role as well as the direction and the tone he is going for:

http://www.icxm.net/x/destiny-halo-co-creator-working-recore.html

"Joseph Staten, the main writer behind many popular Halo novels and video games, and the co-creator of Destiny, is also the lead writer for upcoming Xbox One exclusive ReCore. This is massive news for fans of the franchises. My excitement for ReCore just went through the roof.

According to a post on NeoGAF, Staten was working with Microsoft to write and build stories for their first-party games such as ReCore, Crackdown and Scalebound. A New York Times article about female gaming heroes mentions him as the lead writer for ReCore. The passage says:

ReCore, a Microsoft Studios game scheduled to arrive for Xbox One next year, will open with the main character, Joule, believing that she is the last human in the desert world of Far Eden. Sentient robots roam the sands and ruins of civilization and Joule must enlist some of them in her cause: reviving the human race. How she does it is the game’s central mystery, but the game’s lead writer, Joseph Staten, said the solution would be unconventional. The male gender does not have the monopoly on heroism,” he said. “Joule is emblematic of this conviction, and we hope she’s a character who stands strong and stands out in a market filled with male heroes."

Sounds really good, can't wait for the game.

The trailer of ReCore reminds me more of Nausicaa and WALL-E rather than Halo or Destiny.

This isn't inspiring news tbh as Destiny had a shit story and Halo was only marginally better.

Other than a CGI, we don't know anything about ReCore other than a sketchy studio is behind it with ex-Capcom's Inafune helping out. That quote seems like he's trying to tap the SJW "market" into supporting the game.

I hope it will be a decent game at least.

I think Destiny had a potential to have a good story / lore, but they butchered the original vision and changed / removed so much stuff afterwards. I'm sure you're aware.

It should be noted that the story he wrote for Destiny was mostly cut which lead to him leaving and Destiny getting delayed for a year

Really, the story in Halo video games isn't that good and I dont know what the **** is going on in Destiny. I wouldn't take too much stock on this and that's not trolling MS either, very few games have an interesting story and Halo as well as Destiny doesn't have them.

You can talk about the books for Halo and its universe but it's not coming across in the video games.

But like everything else its ones opinion. I am looking forward to this game though and its a day 1 purchase.

The director of Metroid-FUCKING-Prime is on ReCore. That by itself is enough to be excited for it.

I'm definitely considering getting an Xbone when it comes out. Especially now that Forza 6 is out and Scalebound is on the way.

@Heil68: **** expanded universe, bro! I'm with you on that one. Only complete fanatics are getting all worked up over that. I even know one person who insisted on the fact that Tomb Raider 2013 and ROTR are connected via some companion spinoff comic book and suggested to play the 2013 one before Rise. But as games THEY AREN'T CONNECTED in the slightest.

Bringing him on certainly is not a bad thing, but there is still very little to go on at this point. A CG trailer doesn't cut it for me. I want to at least see the game engine in action and some gameplay to boot. Any studio can make a good CG trailer and not have a game anywhere close to being done or even be any good. Too early to get hyped for this one.

@TheEroica: Even if that was the case, he was the lead writer for Halo 1,2,3. The same games you are saying were the last good Halo games. So what are you talking about ?

Joseph Staten, aka deckard, is the lead writer and cinematics director for Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2 and Halo 3: ODST. He was also partially involved in writing Halo 3, along withLuke Smith and Robert McLees.

I mean I dont listen to recorded messages or read any notes throughout in Halo5, I'm sure they wouldn't make any sense to me anyways.

So, MS can't even try something new when they try something new? They have to play it safe even when creating new IP. Cool story.

People here harping on about story?

**** off, you guys are video gamers. You guys like shit stories on principle.

Anyway, Joe Staten is alright since he spearheaded the original Halo and ODST, both of which entertained me. His problem, however, is the same problem George Lucas has: he's more interested in complex world building that bogs the story down. I wouldn't be surprised if ReCore turned into a brilliant action game that relied heavily on cutscenes with heavy exposition.

Probably bad. As much as I adore the Halo games, their stories are aggressively shitty. Marginally better than the stories in the Killzone and Resistance series, but still really really bad.

Alright, when I saw Halo writer I thought Brian Reed and almost had a heart attack. Really glad it's Staten, now show the gameplay already

@spitfire-six said:

Halo, for all intensive purposes, has a really interesting universe (although at the end of the day it's just really hardcore sci fi) but holy crap is the narrative all over the place. I love Halo's lore but it's confusing as f*ck especially in Bungie's games. Halo's story has always rewarded people who went out and read the books, the graphic novels and comics and not people who only played the games. The story in the games are so reliant on you knowing about the expanded universe that if for example you played Combat Evolved and never read Fall of Reach or Ghost of Onyx you're going to have trouble telling which way is up and down.

Having a cool setting or universe isn't enough, you need to have good narrative. That's one of the reasons people praise games like The Last of Us because even though it's setting and story were generic it's narrative overshadowed it.

Loading Video...

As someone who's played Halo since 2002, I had to watch this video several times over to understand what was going on. If this was solely EU material it wouldn't be an issue, but this knowing this is crucial to understanding plot elements in Halo CE and Halo 4. That is not how developers and writers should structure their stories. I shouldn't have to go and read books and comics to understand crucial plot points in main titles.

Hopefully they don't pull the same sh*t in ReCore and make it where you need to get EU material to understand the plot in the main game.

is this supposed to be excite me for the game?

I couldn't care less about Halo 3,Reach and 4's plot when I played them. And Destiny had a story?

Just hope the gameplay, level design, art direction helps this game. Also from the looks of it, They'll reveal gameplay at E3 and then release it late 2016 or 2017. It does look interesting and I will buy an xbone for the games I wanna play.

Classic shit when story is brought up in SW. "LOL stories in games; ______ 's story always sucked; ______'s story died *arbitrary number* of years ago; You're supposed to be gamers. If I want a good story I'll read a book or watch a movie; well your taste is in your ass"--the Pulitzer prize winning creators that post here.

@FrozenLiquid: I don't want extended exposition. I have a feeling it will be sparse, enigmatic with sterile Nolan-esque editing and will have slightly quirky moments of "human" touch but it won't feature much dialogue during the cutscenes.

Hyping the fact that you made the lead a woman is pretty much a massive red flag. If they're already trying to build hype by being "progressive," which it clearly isn't, then the game and/or it's story are probably generic as ****. I remember hearing these lines near verbatim last gen, when the devs were hyping the rent-at-best Remember Me and Velvett Assassin.

To be fair, ReCore hasn't shown anything yet, so maybe they demo it later this year and it looks awesome. I'm not going to hold my breath though.

Like with anything, I always try to have some extent of skepticism. I never want to go full hype mode with anything because lord knows how bad that can be.

That being said as a huge fan of Zelda and metroid games I certainly can't help but have this game on the radar atleast, and the fact that Metroid Prime's director is working on this project leaves me kind of hopeful.

Considering how shit the stories in Halo and Destiny are I wouldn't consider this great news.
