Halo's storyline

I am wondering, is their anyone here, fanboy or not, that thinks the halo series has a horrible STORY? Please provide a good reason other then "halo is the suxxors".  I am not a fanboy of 360 or any console, and wish i could afford all.  What i am speaking about here is the STORY of halo games.  Only use the books if you can provide back up that it will be shown in halo 3 (ie, kids on the field from books)

I think it's dumb...but fun multiplayer game.

First off, my opinion is that games should contain the story themselves, and that novels add to the experience, but SHOULD NOT be needed. Just wanted to stop the troll who brings up READ THE NOVELS arguement right off the bat.

Now, What bothers me is that it's about us humans in the future, who are space farring, and we are battling the Covenant (a group of aliens united) for some reason. We find a planet type area shaped like a ring, and in it is another type of alien that is soooo bad they can eat the universe, so an older race trapped them.

It's dumb.

We travel the speed of light, we are fighting aliens far in the future, we have genetically engineered soldiers like Master Chief and we are still using SHOTGUNS? IT's Dumb.

Shotgun's, Pistol's, Sniper Rifle's, Machine Guns, Uzi's, and Bazooka's....Real clever. Somehow we didn't manage to evolve our weapons...Right. :roll:

And the Universe conquering Covenant? Their weapon's are a joke. The Needler? God. These guys are lucky to have even banded together. They were were generic alien race #1,235.369 to be killed by us, the gamer. They were obviously nothing more. Just like any story, this terribly oppressive race is dominating the galaxy, until the Protagonist comes along and destroy's them with modern day conventional weapon's we still are using somehow in the future.

I'm telling you, it's dumb.

But fun, and that's why I play games. If it makes you feel better, Gears is dumber, but more fun.

Of course I realize that Shooter's aren't known for good stories, because the gameplay demands lots of action.

EDIT : This is just ONE FACET of many problem's with HALO. I want to point out there are many other things that bother me, but to be original, the post above was just a new angle that hasn't been presented before. There are many other inconsisitancies in the Halo Universe, but listing a thesis on the subject matter defeats the purpose of SW, as it will be gone by tomorrow. No thanks.

It's not a bad story and pretty good by FPS standards. I just don't think it's this masterpiece the Halo fanboys think it is.Ibacai

I use to think it had a horrible story, till i played it again.  The detail of the races, the covenant schism(with alot of references to the historical Great schism of Protestants and Catholics), civil wars. It all just seems so deep to me:P

Of course, Like any game, I also know that you can draw parallels if you want...but you can do that for Any game, like Mario Bros., Pac-man, or even Quake. In the end, it's fun and attempts to not be so lame about it being a shooter, but it fails in a couple of ways, but in the shooter category it's pretty good, however Half-Life Owns it.(Of course, if you play Halo, you already know BUNGIE owes VALVE big time anyways.)

The story on why this ring exists explains this all, also as to why the convenant has the weapons they do.  You can get all this from the actual  game without reading the books.  Also, invent a laser gun and a way to make a beam of light hurt, and then i shall agree we should upgrade our weapons more.  Difference in beleives as to why the covenant and earth is also explained.  Its in the game, all u have to do is pay attention.

Apparently you didn't understand me, I didn't say I was confused on the simplistic nature of the story, I know every tidbit that was given to me, and it's quite poor.

Details were given to me in the movie Predator, The Transporter, and Rambo, but it doesn't mean they were SMART.

I know the Covanent have crappy weapons, my point is WHY did BUNGIE write them with SUCH crappy weapons.
Why did bungie do what they did? Because it's just a simple game about shooting aliens, nothing more. IT is a dumb story, dumb game, but I will say it's not the Most Stupid Game, it's quite entertaining, albeit, DUMB.

I understand why the ring exists, but I think it's DUMB that it was written like it was.

And as far as making a Laser gun, I don't care about it being a laser gun, as long as it's something. IF we mastered FASTER THAN LIGHT TRAVEL, we wouldn't be using Metal Projectile weapon's anymore, that's nonsense. (Of course, mastering faster than light travel is nonsense too...)

Honestly, I didn't make HALO, so I don't need to make a laser gun(OR other futuristic weapon), that was Bungie's job, and they failed.

But the whole problem is it is not stupid. Covenant have laser rifles, and energy swords. Reminds me kinda of star wars, one of the best stories ever told in movies. So weapons are out.

This game has a deep story, with alot of the way history has gone in human developtment. Civil wars caused by religious schisms (if u know history, the great schism in france, germany, and most of the rest of europe). Plus the nature of races to thing they are dominant. Its bigger then any of those movies u listed.

Also, moving faster then the speed of light is not impossible, t hey said the same things about speed of sound and also the actual invention of anything.  Everything was thought to be impossible at one point, but somone always goes beyond.

They were were generic alien race #1,235.369 to be killed by us, the gamer. They were obviously nothing more. Just like any story, this terribly oppressive race is dominating the galaxy, until the Protagonist comes along and destroy's them with modern day conventional weapon's we still are using somehow in the future.

I'm telling you, it's dumb.

But fun, and that's why I play games. If it makes you feel better, Gears is dumber, but more fun.

Of course I realize that Shooter's aren't known for good stories, because the gameplay demands lots of action.

This game has a deep story, with alot of the way history has gone in human developtment. Civil wars caused by religious schisms (if u know history, the great schism in france, germany, and most of the rest of europe). Plus the nature of races to thing they are dominant. Its bigger then any of those movies u listed.

Also, moving faster then the speed of light is not impossible, t hey said the same things about speed of sound and also the actual invention of anything. Everything was thought to be impossible at one point, but somone always goes beyond.

Okay, that's where we differ. I am a HUGE Star Wars Geek, and heck, I even collected the $100 Light Sabers...but the Lucas Written Commercial Star Wars story Monster is dumb as hell. That's okay, because it's a great flick.

Honestly, I didn't make HALO, so I don't need to make a laser gun(OR other futuristic weapon), that was Bungie's job, and they failed.

Hmmmm...I can see that. At least you get more out of it than me, kudos to you! I am more a Sci-Fi guy, so I get real technical when I watch Star Gate, and Star Trek, but I still enjoy it. Just get a little peeved at stuff...so as you can imagine, Halo being in the Sci-Fi genre irks me a bit, but from a historical point of view, it may be cool. If you can overlook the science.

You need to recheck your history; the Great Schism refers to the split between the Catholic and the Orthodox branches of Christianity. What you are thinking of is the Protestant Reformation. I see very little similarities between Halo and both of those historical events. Of course I don't normally play FPS games and never bothered to finish them, so could you please explain the similarities to me?

Yes, but the ones specifically set for Baulders gate and never winter nights were not written untill after.  Also Warcraft 3.  These books came out after the story was made, they jsut went even deeper.

I use to think it had a horrible story, till i played it again. The detail of the races, the covenant schism(with alot of references to the historical Great schism of Protestants and Catholics), civil wars. It all just seems so deep to me:P

You need to recheck your history; the Great Schism refers to the split between the Catholic and the Orthodox branches of Christianity. What you are thinking of is the Protestant Reformation. I see very little similarities between Halo and both of those historical events. Of course I don't normally play FPS games and never bothered to finish them, so could you please explain the similarities to me?

Yes your right, my mistake. I confused the Protestant reform with the great schism because both are still schism:$ mah bad. The similarities basically lie in the fact that the covenant is one set religion, this great journey religion. One branch of them, the elites, change their religious views after alot of lies, deceits, and betrayals put on them by the prophets(think pope and indulgences). Although their is not neccessarly a 95 thesis, the arbiter can be seen as a martin luther, spreading the word of their religion as having been corrupted and made wrong, and not really going against religion as a whole but instead the certain way in which it is run, and that it has detered from what was originally taught. This all leads to a big religious civil war, that will be shown in more detail in halo 3. Halo does show no real similarities with the great schism, that was my bad.

I think the story of Halo is better taken on its own rather than comparing it to the Reformations, especially since it ignores many aspects of them. I am glad we can agree that Halo's story is not historically deep, however one thing that when playing the game I thought it did well was always give me a clear story related objective that had a certain mystery about it, like find the Silent Cartographer etc. It also sets up a game world that although is not on par with Middle Earth is still rather intriguing. And in the end even thought it seems like a typical save the world story the simple fact is that I never felt like it was obviously forced down my throat even though I knew I was saving it, weird huh?
