I didn't read the other pages because I'm sure it would do little good, given the subject matter. I'll just bang my head once on the brick wall of hopelessly divided opinion and leave.
Halo 1 had an alright story for an FPS, I didn't have much of a problem with it. It gave me an excuse to go somewhere and do something, and thus I had a reason to shoot things like mad, which (IMO) was fun as heck. Standard "ancient race leaves doomsday device" stuff.
Halo 2 had a bad case of "universe explodes" syndrome, introducing incredible amounts of new developments far too quickly in a storyline that, while interesting, was a little too convoluted for its own good and tripped up here and there. It was as if the writers had sat down in a board meeting and gone over everything they could put in the game, then threw it all in somewhere in there. Some of the pieces don't fit too well, but a lot of interesting twists and possibilities were introduced. While I admit it had its faults, I definitely liked Halo 2's story, and I think they have a lot of opportunity to shock the world with some radical new developments... like the forerunners possibly being humans (it would explain a lot).
I think the arguement that the humans are travelling in and colonising space, but they still use assault rifles and shotguns, making the storyline stupid... well, that's silly at best. What do you want? I mean, the ships in space use awesome weapons. Magnetically charged MAC rounds? That's freakin' awesome.
But on the ground? What do you want? A gun that fires a round, which seeks out all enemies and annihilates them? Or stupid guns like in resistance, which fire billions of tiny lasers; but it still takes just as many shots to bring down an enemy as it would with an ordinary pistol - so what's the point?
Face it, we can already kill a person pretty darned efficiently. There's no point making a super-cool laser beam gun if it's gonna kill a guy in one shot; cause we can already do that with a rifle. So the only other alternative is to give you a gun which annihilates everybody; and that wont make for very interesting gameplay, will it?
Besides, the human weapons are clearly designed to contrast the covenant weapons.
Halo (the original) was okay... Halo 2 was garbage... shooting someone in the head is equal damage than the feet, like WTF??? Halo 3 will be the same crap with been-there-done-that graphics. OOOO Storyline... Halo is a copy of Metroid, sorry it's true... it's just adapted for young teenagers.iMacBot
*sigh* It does equal damage 'cause you have an energy shield. When the shield is broken, one hit in the dead results in an instant kill.
EDIT: You just compared halo's storyline to metroid's. Why did i even bother responding? You're bashing games you haven't played.
I love every aspect of the story, in the game and in the books. As far as in the game goes, my favorite parts all feature the Arbiter, Gravemind and the Oracles, 343GuiltySpark and 2401PenitentTangent.Spartan070
Gravemind was the one thing i hated. Everything up until that point was amazing. I mean, what the heck? A plant-monster-thing that can teleport you places? As well as itself? What the hell? Does it have magical powers or something?
My favourite aspect is the forerunners; how the covenant are simply immitating their technology, and would be useless without regularly discovering ancient forerunner tech like the rings themselves, or the ark.

It in no way shape or form copies metroid. You cannot even make a valid arguement on how it does. Closest thing i would say that it copies would be the halo mind eater things, but the flood and those things seperate after the fact that they both take over after latching on

I know you'll hate me for this but the people who read the books, the events of Halo 2 were not overly incredible at all. Before Halo 2 starts, while MC is on his way back to earth, you read all about Brutes, Prophets and other members of the Covenant that aren't even in the games yet, like the Engineers.
He and a team of Spartans actually blow up a Covenant Dock and refit station for Covenant ships that was 30 kilometers wide. Talk about a big space station, now that was epic. The Unyeilding Heirophant. And that book, Third Strike, was released long before Halo 2.

Grave mind was AMAZING. It is not a plant, it is made up of the dead bodies that have accumlated and the horde have taken over, he is made of the bodies of the dead:P. He teleports because he hacks, basically, into the teleportation grid of the halo ring, it is mentioned in the game.

Good post, well written. I concur 110%.:D
I think it's dumb...but fun multiplayer game.
First off, my opinion is that games should contain the story themselves, and that novels add to the experience, but SHOULD NOT be needed. Just wanted to stop the troll who brings up READ THE NOVELS arguement right off the bat.
Now, What bothers me is that it's about us humans in the future, who are space farring, and we are battling the Covenant (a group of aliens united) for some reason. We find a planet type area shaped like a ring, and in it is another type of alien that is soooo bad they can eat the universe, so an older race trapped them.
It's dumb.
We travel the speed of light, we are fighting aliens far in the future, we have genetically engineered soldiers like Master Chief and we are still using SHOTGUNS? IT's Dumb.
Shotgun's, Pistol's, Sniper Rifle's, Machine Guns, Uzi's, and Bazooka's....Real clever. Somehow we didn't manage to evolve our weapons...Right.
And the Universe conquering Covenant? Their weapon's are a joke. The Needler? God. These guys are lucky to have even banded together. They were were generic alien race #1,235.369 to be killed by us, the gamer. They were obviously nothing more. Just like any story, this terribly oppressive race is dominating the galaxy, until the Protagonist comes along and destroy's them with modern day conventional weapon's we still are using somehow in the future.
I'm telling you, it's dumb.
But fun, and that's why I play games. If it makes you feel better, Gears is dumber, but more fun.
Of course I realize that Shooter's aren't known for good stories, because the gameplay demands lots of action.

The problem with your weapon argument is why fix something that works?
Get a life guys, seriously LOLiMacBot
Hmm, try heeding your own advice before you go on nonsensical tangents trolling on Halo.:|
To be honest, it's a damn shame they didn't just make games out of the books. We're not brain-dead people who cant handle a storyline in an FPS you know, microsoft.Ninja-Vox
To be honest, i seriously think they are waiting for halo 3. They built up a whole bunch of intrige in certain things and will conclude it having everyone go OOOOO
yes halo's storyline definitely sucks  look at the ending for halo 2... it was horrible and left you wanting more.. yet robbed cuz you paid $50 for a game not nearly as great as the original... not only that but halo is extremely overrated progenitorvirus
Yes. Halo is over-rated. Not only that, but the sequel isn't as good as the game which you've already said is over-rated. So the reviewers weren't just all wrong, but they were wrong by MILES. Heck, it should have scored like a 5.0, right? I guess EVERYBODY just got it wrong.
Thanks progenitorvirus for clearing that up.

Bungie has hinted that we know almost nothing about Gravemind but it/he will play a big part of the Halo 3 story, along with his prisoner, Cortana.

ive beaten both lemmings... if i gave a rating... halo 7.0, halo 2 1.8. the ending for halo 2 was the most retarded thing... ill give you props though the first ending was semi-decent... seeing the covenant and some soldiers get obliberated then mc and kortana or w/e her name was on that huge ship with the halo being destroyed...
if my memory serves me correct... mc just has is gun up and is like whoa im totally cool lets end the game with a huge battle going on in the background  yeah sorry but both games are really overrated.
Halo:CE and the books are great..... but Halo2 just completely ruined the story and everything else good about the first one imo.
Lazy_Boy88
I think the storyline in Halo 2 was sort of an empire strikes back affair; or Lost season 3 :P. You begin expecting answers to your questions, but instead you just get more questions, and while some things do receive closure, many more plotlines open up. Of course, it all comes to a head with Halo 3, but the frustration with Halo 2 was finishing the game and realising that none of your questions would be answered.
Halo had a start, a middle and an end. Halo 2 was more of a serious of events linking Halo 1 and Halo 3, and the lack of any ending or closure to those events at the end of Halo 2 is what annoyed a lot of people, i think. After halo 3, looking back, halo2 will probably fall into place just like the Empire Strikes back.
I hope, at least.

Again, you're a fanboy. Nobody cares. Reviewers say AAA. Fans say AAA. You claiming it's overrated? Nobody cares. You may as well walk into Russia and say "communism is wrong!" Do you think anyone will give a crap as to what you have to say? No. Especially in these circumstances, where you have a very limited knowledge of what you're bashing and not a single explanation as to why you're bashing it other than "its teh suxxors!1" and a series of inane  smiley faces which have no sense or context to them.
Now off you go.

I can see if you didn't like it, I can see if you hated the ending, what I can't see is how it ruined the story. The events were highly predictable if you actually read Fall of Reach and Third Strike before playing Halo 2. It's almost not possible to like the books and think that Halo 2 ruined the story.

I enjoy the story. It is not the best story, but H3 does look pretty cool.
