So while the console war is still wide open, things appear to be a little different in the handheld market, where Nintendo basically rules the rule as far as sales, game library or third party support is concerned, and the PSP is busy recovering from its initial identity crisis (am I a gaming system or an mp3 player? Or a movie player? Or a net browser??? OMG, who am I?*), and the drought of good games it has experienced lately. But things sem to be improving, as its future library keeps getting more and more impressive. But the DS is playing hard to get, as a new iteration is launched, with some multimedia capabilites, and a spate of new anticipated games is announced.

My question is, which handheld do you prefer? Sound off!

*I am Bourne.

Even if I enjoy Sony's products. DS because there are so many games. But PSP has its ups also such as playing PSN games, Dissidia, KH:BBS, and Agito XIII

Yeah handhelds aren't friendly to the hands. The old DSfat use to hurt more because it was top heavy. Anyway I like both a lot and can't choose. I never thought there would actually be two great handhelds existing. I remember having a Game Gear and liking the technology since it was color but there were very few games. It's just cool to see someone hang with Nintendo in the modern handheld market, which is obviously the best it has ever been.

Well, I don't own a handheld. But when I go to Best Buy, all I see on the demo-version PSP are games that look like they'd work better on the PS2 - or sports games. But on the DS there are a lot of fun and quirky games - Rythm Heaven, Professor Layton 2, etc. I'm not interested in handheld gaming as a whole, but if I had to choose I'd definitely get a DS for the larger game library. If you already have an iPhone or even an iPod Touch, you don't need the extra features of the PSP.

Handhelds actually trancend brand loyalty I belive. As there are a large percentage of pr xbox people who absolutely love their DSs and PSPs. And there are SOny fans who love the DS. I even saw a Sheep who said he would take the PSP any day! :o Opinions and personal tastes are amazing things!

I think the Monster Hunter franchise has done the most for the PSP, even if that's series is only big in Japan its influence in making the PSP successful can't be ignored.

The DS craps on the PSP for several reasons, the most important of these reasons being that handhelds should provide totally unique experiences, which the DS does. The PSP tries to hard to replicate the console experience in mininature form, which is simply a waste IMHO. I could see somebody buying a DS because they just want that unique handheld experience (although I don't care for handhelds, I've considered a DS many times for something unique; that Scribblenauts game has inflamed that desire, though I don't know if I'll make the purpose). It seems like somebody would opt for a PSP if they just have to get their fix of console-like games on the go.

Don't get wrong. Although I greatly dislike the PSP, it has it's place and the power of the thing is impressive on a technical level. But just don't expect me to be impressed withits vanilla approach.

Chains of Olympus and Tekken 5: Dark Ressurection are the two best handheld games I have ever played. PSP gets more support than people think. Monster Hunter is the true savior of the PSP but people tell me those games are terrible so I don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing. :/

The remote play, ability to play PS1 games from PSN and certain other things that I won't mention are great features for the PSP, but it's own game library is severely lacking, far worse than any home system in fact.

I honestly cannot see the appeal of playing the likes of Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid or Resistance, games that are heavily dependant on high-end graphics and immersion, on a tiny handheld screen with less graphical power than a Dreamcast... and people wonder why the DS runs circles around it in sales.

It may be a different story in Japan, but half of the games made for the PSP over there never see the light of day over here.

When I praise the DS, I'm not focusing on their line-up at some arbitrary point in time. I give it props for its unique approach and the fact that it sets itself apart. I like concept of it over the concept of the PSP, which I find to be typical and boring. The PSP almost feels redundant to me.

I think it very well may be. It's the first handheld to feel truly unique as the early Gameboys tried to emulate the console experience of that time.

DS. It generally works better as a handheld gaming device, possesses a great games library that overshadows the PSP's, and has the characteristics needed for the gamer-on-the-go (long battery life, portable size, weight, etc.). PSP is a good system, but its attempt at making console games "portable" puts me off entirely. If I want to play games that look great and that require save points, I'd rather play on my home console.

I never understood the whole save point argument. With a PSP you can just turn it off and it doesn't turn the game off so do you really need to save everywhere?

The DS wins in terms of QUANTITY

The psp wins in terms of QUALITY

Its down to your choice, if you want mario kart, nintendogs, professor layton, legend of zelda to..

Crisis core, tekken5 DR, metal gear solid, lumines, burnout, resistance.. etc.

Depends what games you like, and what you do with your handheld.
ie watch movies, play together, go online, listen to music, wifi..
