It's not really $50, though. The cost of the phone is built into the contract. In most cases, it is actually quite a bit cheaper to just pay the full retail cost of the phone and get service without a contract than it is to take the contract deal.

If you have good credit you can pay ZERO down and break the cost of the phone into 24 payments. Of course you can buy some walmart chinese special that sucks all around. The service sucks and you will be having buyers remorse.

Kind of like wii u owners that bought their console for 350 and had a price drop months later. Then the little 3rd party support it had just dried up. I personally get a good gear sure it cost a little more but it is worth it.

I don't think you even need good credit to do that. Almost everyone I know does that and most of them have awful credit. I don't do that, though. I just chose to buy a somewhat cheap phone and I put it on a plan that limits me to 100 minutes with unlimited texting and data. It costs me $60 per month. The last time I had a contract phone, I was paying about $140 per month. The data is slower, but I really don't use my phone much for anything other than texting and the occasional call, so I just don't care. If phone games were better than games on the 3DS/Vita, I would consider getting a better phone. They aren't better, though. In fact, they are much, much worse.

The problem with gaming on tablets and cellphones isn't graphics, it's the controls. I'm sure in some way they could port several games from the PS3/X360 to high end tablets and phones, the problem is the controls. I have several times tried to play GTA 3, GTA SA, and different racing games on my tablet, and the results are the same, disappointing. Nothing beats a dedicated handheld gaming device with buttons.

Games on tablets and phones must be made from the ground up to support touchscreen, and that means simpler games, and games filled with QTE.

I've been using my S4 for my handheld gaming (along with a gameklip, a DS3 and a few great emulators) and couldn't be happier. I have access to some of the all time greatest games as well as brand new Android games (not to mention the remakes we're getting like the PS2 era Gran Theft Auto games).

Having said that, handhelds aren't going anywhere for one reason...children. I don't trust my 5 year old with my phone, but I'm more than happy to let him play my old DS or PSP. And when he gets a few years older I'm sure he'll be asking for whatever new handheld console is out.

Is that some kind of joke. Microsoft and Sony couldn't even develop emulators to allow the PS4/Xbox One to be backwards compatible. It will be a long, long time before we see PS3/360 emulators. (There isn't even a good ps2/xbox emulator yet)

So what is PS Now?

They run PS3s in a server farm. (Well, not exactly. They have servers running the same chips)

You can use a dual shock 3 or a 360 controler or buy a mogo controller. Problem solved some even have extra batteries built in.

You have a point children and cell phones don't mix.

If anyone has a debit/credit card then you can get a Nexus 5 off contract for 350 bucks (16 GB) from Google Play Store.

It's android and you can run plenty of games via emulators and Google Play App.

Snapdragon 800 with Adreno 330. One of the most powerful SoC's today.

Later this year, you'll even get a more powerful phone for about the same price.

Full Windows 8 will gain momentum towards 2015 and that will come strong towards actual PC games in portables in the near future.

Its a shame but handheld gaming is slowly but surely being killed off by mobiles.

Heard something yesterday about smart phones not expected to continue selling as they have been.....so maybe it's too early to write off handhelds.
