If the aftermarket HDDs are so popular with PS3 owners, why doesn't Sony just keep the PS3 HDD at around 60 GB and lower the price of the PS3? Why do they keep coming out with bigger HDDs for the PS3?
The slim boosted sales of the PS3, so I think the number of people replacing the HDD must be rather small. Therefore, I don't see this a significant advantage for most PS3 owners. Heck, I haven't even filled my 80GB MGS4 PS3, yet.
because they are nice enough to hook people up.No, if the were "nice", they would have kept the HDD at around 60 GB and pricedthe Slimmuch lower than $299.
You do realize that the HDD is not that expensive for Sony. If we can get a 500GB HDD for $80 - $90, then Sony can surely get one for no more than half that. So that would make the 250GB HDD around $15 - $20 per PS3 (assuming half the GB = half the price). I wouldn't say $280 is "much lower" than $299. I will say this though... for the people that don't download anything, and remove installs when you're not playing a certain game, or store any other media on their system 60GB would be enough for them to get by. BUT, for the thousands of people that want to use these next-gen for a one-stop-shop for all their entertainment needs... upgrading the HDD is an absolute must, and completely worth the money. As TC stated in his OP... it's a damn shame that MS charges SO much more for their HDD.
