Ninja gaiden (nes), Ghost n goblins psp, and zelda 2. The worst one being zelda 2, I mean, seriously? Those bubbles that come out of nowhere and make you die off cliffs, it's brutal. I may consider beating it on 3ds (thank god for restore points)
Also mario lost levels.

The way every game the past 15+ years holds your hand like a you're a retarded child no game is hard.
"Double Dragon 2" and "Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts" come to mind (when continues were limited).
I was about to say Double Dragon 2 was easy, but then I remembered I would always take all the lives from player 2 before getting on with the game... not even sure if I ever beat it legit come to think of it.
I didn't even know you could do that in DD2. Ah, the joys of Nintendo Power.
It was one of the very few games I never actually beat. The was a platforming section on conveyor belts with spikes at the bottom late in the game. If you know DD2 then you know Billy's jumping isn't actually made for platforming.
Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts was extra tedious just because on top of being stupidly hard, it made you go through the game twice to get the "real ending." I know the original Ghosts 'n' Goblins pulled similar shit.

,
It took me forever to beat the first level. That game was HARD. Controller breaking hard. I could image Nintendo made a shit load off of that game in peripheral replacements.
Could you imagine the crying if a game that hard was released today. Dark souls does not touch that game in difficulty. IMO
Dota 2
Surprised nobody else has mentioned this, Dota 2 is a hard game that requires some serious dedication to be even half decent.
I can't really choose from every game ever any more, but last gen it was super meat boy (the souls games aren't as hard as people hype them, like all rpg's they can be broken easy enough).
probably mega man 3, or ninja gaiden (NES) and if you count MMOs too, then Final fantasy XI online. the endgame on that game is BRUTAL. in fact, fu$k the endgame, just leveling up to 75 and finishing the chains of promathia expansion main missions it's such feat, in fact. fu$k all that. just getting past valkurm dunes (noob area) without power leveling and getting past lvl 20 it's a manhood trial, actually fu%k that, try to find the game on ps2, then find the network adapter an pray for it to be compatible with your ps2 model then manange to get a stable connection and just THEN you might be able to get past the character creation screen, now time to play a 2001 archaic MMO with a controller. yep,, FFXI was that hard, but its also my favourite game :) also i forgot to mention i barely knew any english when i played it and theres no spanish servers or anyhting. in fact, there was no lenguage specific servers, soooo yeah... the difficulty was multiplied x10 for me lol
Easily the most difficult game ever created....Battletoads. The first level of the damn game is like a marathon of torture
@B4X
My brother Exploited the hell out unbalanced games and used them to beat my ass repeadetly... Even in single player games theres a few tricks to exploit more points out of the system and he would always wipe out my high scores...... I don't like old school ideas of what is considered hard or challenging.
Now that developers are better at balancing things out I can win fair and square.

Every games rules can be broken. You just have to resist the temptation? Your brother play sports and take roids too?
EDIT: I see where you're coming from. Thank god we have a half/stop patching system in place now.
@B4X
This was like 10 years ago.... He's not much of a gamer now, he's working.
And Not all game rules can be exploited..... If theres two games that have been exploitation proof to me.... Its DiRT 3 and Dead Or Alive. DiRT 3 has well balanced cars and DOA is highly dependent on Double Blind Metagaming.... Trust me... Even the game's own AI can't Exploit the system.... Its air tight.... As far as I can tell. I test its credibilty by challenging my brother to play it.... If I win... Its fair ! :D

Haha, yep. I know exactly the part. There is the one part with conveyor belts and spikes and another with disappearing platforms and spikes. Easily the two most difficult sections of the game. I remember getting all the way to those conveyors without losing a life, only to drain them all right there and completely rage.
Also, the first time I made it to the last boss my little baby sis crawled over to the NES and hit reset... being a 7 year old at the time, I had no idea how to deal with that much rage lol. I know that tears and controller throwing were involved.
Ultimate Ghosts N Goblins isn't that hard on novice difficulty. If you think this game is hard, try playing Super Ghouls N Ghosts. No matter how skilled I get at that game, I cannot beat the first level. The checkpoints are way too far apart from each other.
Rayman (the 2D original) is borderline impossible. That's the hardest game I ever played.

I beat Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts both times to get the "real" ending. *smug*
@ConanTheStonerI remember that Battle of Olympus game (don't remember if I beat it) and Bayou Billy is infamously hard. I remember the problem in Bayou Billy was that the enemies had a longer reach than you.
Futari Ultra
O_O'
Holy sh*t! I had to be crazy to even try to play that...
I found the original kid icarus on the nes to be quite challenging.. recently however it was la mulana
There are a bunch of games on the SNES that were really diffucult in my younger days. The more recent ones are Dragonball Z Budokai 3 when it comes to the hardest bosses and Trials Evolution
