Ninja Gaiden... the original version before black when they didn't have an 'easy' mode. That's the one I have (for xbox) and it was near impossible the first time, now i can beat the first 8 chapters without dying, but it's still one of the hardest i've played also.Phazevariance
I think black or hurricane pack had the highest difficulty they added to the game along with a lunar staff and the double swords if i remember correctly i was never able to beat it on that mode.
Super Ghouls n' Ghosts on the Super Nintendo. That game had been responsible for many bricks/TV collisions back in the 16bit days :PAdobeArtistthat game pissed me off so bad. "Oh, you need this bracelet thing that I forgot to mention. You're gonna have to replay the entire game to get to the final boss."
i'd say the original Ninja Gaiden.. that game always kicked my arse when I was a kid, Haven't played it in a good 10+ years though. Would prolly be easier now though. I wonder if it or ever will be on the VC...
edit: just check and yes it is on the VC :) sweet.

I think easy mode in NGB was only accessable if you die a few times on the first level. But what makes NGB the hardest version is that it was rebalanced after the first. You can't spam that swooping swallow (I think its called) move agaist bosses for example.
I also heard its harder than Sigma for some reasons.
Thats whats dumb about NG2, there is a move with the twin swords (dragons claw and tiger fang or blade of the Archfiend), its a two technique combo (it goes from one to the other) its called the Great Chasm to Purgatory Slash. Its done by pressing y,y forwards y then down Y I think. It looks like a vertical spinning blade wheel. The problem is it obliterates the bosses. I beat the archfiend on my first go on normal, using those moves with the blade of the archfiend. You won't need to use it more than six times on any boss.
NGBs the hardest game i've sat through, but there are loads of impossible 2D games though.
Hardest game this gen- THats the one thing this gen could use....a hard(not difficult.. i mean HARD) game...everything is either decent in difficulty or easy. on normal settings obviousaly is what im talking about.jg4xchampNG2?

EuroMafiahmz...never really had a problem with Acolyte and warrior, espeacially the bosses. I killed most of them with 2-3 combos of any weapon. Not saying Warrior is easy (I kinda allready did:P), but it feels just right imo. Just like the first NG on xbox feels just right on Hard. Guess it's just me:P
There were more frustrating games I've played but those may be b/c of poor control or poorly designed levels and cheap hits but this game was both very tough to complete and very lengthy overall game.

Monster Hunter Freedom 2, I've played over 120 hours and still haven't finished all the guild hall G rank quests.
Cant think of many hard right now..
Ninja Gaiden was darn hard though. Had too memorize where every enemy came from, where every item spawns, how too make every jump.,.. That game was quite frustrating. Probably the first game I played that had a story though. Not bad for its time.
