So, in your opinion, what is the hardest genre or what is the hardest one to master?

Personally, I think it's RTS since I'm really bad at micro-management and it just seems to take a lot of strategy and tactics to be good at them.

Fighting (except for Super Smash Bros) and FPS come at a close second considering no matter what, I always seem to be the n00b in all matches I play. :P

I would have to say the quite opposite, but then again I play a great deal of RTS.. Probably realism racing games for me.. But I am not into them anyways.. [Offnot.. F- Zero GX or w/e was the only game I quit on because it was insanely hard.]

Absolutely.  I couldn't win many of the old school games, but most games these days can be finished if you have the time.

True. Anyone who says otherwise needs to play Ikaruga, R-Type, and Gradius V. It will break them. Someone get Panzer_Zwei in here. I'm sure he can list much harder shmups than I can. Radiant Silvergun perhaps?

by hard do u mean physical difficulty or intensity?
a find stealth games hard on higher difficulties because the AI seems suspiciouser
but RTS against a good human is probably the most nerve racking gaming experience possible. so many waves of never ending rush. MAKE IT STOP!!!

I'm currently failing miserably at Last Hope.

FPS, RTS, Stealth, and Fighters. You can be good at these games, but they're pretty hard to master. For some FPS, such as Counter-Strike, you have to use tactics and teamwork, along with being accurate. For RTS, you have to micromanage, etc. For Fighters, you have to learn great combos and hone your timing. As for stealth, I personally just think they're hard.

Don't let your nostalgia fall in. Old school games are some of the easiest games ever created. I can pass most in literally an hour (any of the Mega Man's, Super Mario's, etc. etc.)

For me, Simulation games. Not the Sports or Race simulations, I'm talking about Simcity and Civilization games. I find them to be ridiculously hard (though I am addicted to those kinds of games). Or maybe I just suck at them. I really don't know. it's probably the latter, though. All other games don't seem as hard too me (except maybe the Halo games on Legendary and Ninja Gaiden).

SHMUPs seem the most difficult to me. I'm not great at them, but I've seen some of the crazier ones, and it's rather ridiculous. The level of pattern recognition and sheer precision required to win is unsurpassed anywhere.

I totally suck at RTS games, though, so that could also count.

Nah, he means like Battletoads and Ghosts'n'Goblins (I think).
You know - retro games where you tend to die in one hit, the enemies move erratically, and your attack radius is painfully short?

So true. Sure many were just broken to the point of not even being able to beat them, but sitll its a challange, and thats all that kept you playing those games. The fact that you never finished them. Retro takes teh boat for me because it covered every genre, just older times.. ;)

Haven't played Beatmania IIDX, but I don't see why so many have problems with rhythm games. Every one I've played I've done well at. DDR, EBA, Gitaroo Man, Guitar Hero, Amplitude, Parappa... I guess I'm just blessed in the rhythm department.

So you didn't finished your older games?

Everybody's saying how dificult those old games were, but that was like the standard difficulty of the time. Gamers are just getting soft.

Also, I'm not saying I'm teh hardcore, but what I mean is that, that was basically the standard of the time, and is just what you had to deal with normally. People finished games then, just like they do now.

Also there were many other motivations, specially with a limited daily allowance that you had to juice up to the max at the Arcades. Many people  could finish games with just 1 credit.

Just watch a video of Beatmania IIDX or Pop n Music and you'll see. 7 keys + turn table + insanse speed = dementing.

Oh I don't need to see a video to know that. I've seen it first hand. This past August I was at Otakon, an Anime/Gaming con in Baltimore, Maryland, and I got to see a Beatmania IIDX expert first hand. It was humbling, to say the least. Like I said, I do well at the games I play. I'm better than most, but in every one of those games I mentioned there are people who will put me to shame. For example, watching a video of someone AAA'ing Max 300 on Heavy. Wow.

Super smash bros. is probably one of the hardest fighting games to truely master. because the timing is rediculus. short hop fast fall laser, short hoping in general with some characters, wave dash, shine wave, teching, real edge gaurding, and truely improvised combos, and just plain knowing exactly where to get your character at the right time, take FOREVER to really get down. Its not just a button masher I promise.

EDIT: I wold have to say that multiplayer RTS is one of the hardest and most nerve racking gaming experiences there is when you are playing against someone good. the shear sence of urgency makes it that much harder. (especially when you are looking down the wrong end of a zerg rush)
