This is pretty much what it boils down to.

colosion

QFT.

Gaming would not miss a beat if Sony left the industry.

Really? I mean really? Sony puts very good games out, it would be a shame if they stop to develop them... (no more Ueda games, ugh....)

Yah, and Sega systems had some of the most memorable games ever as well, but when they left nobody thought twice about it because nothing actually happened to the industry. Sega was one of the biggest names in gaming ever, and when they died NOTHING HAPPENED. If Sony had to back out guess what? Nothing would happen.

I guess I'll never know unless they go multiplat, it works both ways, many people will never experience how fun it is to be sniper in Killzone 2, make levels in little big planet or Kick some asses with kratos, they never will. Its the way of gaming, not everyone can afford every system, not everyone likes several systems

Wii is selling just fine 360 is selling just fine DS is selling just fine PC is always just fine I really wouldn't see the big deal if Sony left. All the current first party developers would just transfer to the other platforms and most likely sell more games.

Right, and do you think Sony would stop producing games? Or at the very least they wouldn't sell the developers to different companies? No, and it's pretty obvious my post was referring to Sega dropping out of the console industry.

I quoted this

Gaming would not miss a beat if Sony left the industry.

And it's not easy to "sell developers to diferent companies". Well, even if some of the top studios of Sony were bought, they would probably not benefict from massive budet's that sony is nowdays pumping into them. I know that there is a very strong sony hate this times, but if sony left the industry I think that it would be a very sad day for gamers....

If Sony's Destiny is to Drop out of the video game market then so does my presence in it as a consumer

No. You're just stuck in the past. You're missing the big picture. What made PS1 + PS2 great was the 3rd party support. The PS3 flopped at lauch, so gamers went elseware for greener pastures. Dev support is much more important than brand loyalty or how powerful a console is. I have to admit though that the PS3 is finally getting some great titles and with a price drop I hope can have an opportunity to enjoy them.

sony didnt develop lbp, heavy rain, nor flower

gaming has benefited from creative developers more than anything... give credit where its due

Sony is the only company who encourages these types of games. And yes, they did develop LBP. Sony has an extensive first party.

no, sony didnt develop LBP. if you read MM's history, they had the idea and showed it to sony... then sony bought the company.

it wasnt sony's idea

it was the creative minds at MM

according to this, 3 founding members of MM came up with the idea when they were working at Lionhead studios

Sony owned MM when it was developed, therefore sony developed LBP. It doesn't matter if the idea was there before sony bought the company, because it wasn't a project in motion until it was a sony project with sony funding.

It's not so much that they moved away from sony as games are just interspersed between 360 and PS3. There's no clear PS2 gen, because Microsoft attacked the majority this gen, unlike it's niche position last gen.

It already being developed to the point where a demo was released is a completely different, story I take it back.

But it is good that Sony funds these kinds of projects. Sony always seems to be more interested in the artistc and creative side of gaming, which is what I like about them.

the point i'm trying to push out is that looking at the other consoles, which of their titles do things that are out of the ordinary and not gimmicky contrivance *cough* wii? all i'm saying is that look at the company's history. their tenacity to stray off the beaten path is what makes us all aware of these rare gems that pushes gaming forard.

You're just going to have to accept the fact that not everyone puts Sony on pedestal like you do. :)

I'm not i just like top quality hardware with progressive software that sets it apart. i'm not bashing anyone else's products i've just been acustomed to good quality. the snes got interested in gaming the playstation made me a gamer

you can track me, I see you believe in sony after so many fiascos, just like me One day the PlayStation 4 will have 100 million console advantage over the other systems and nearly monopolize all third party support, thats when gaming will dig itself out of the casual focus and blossom again, believe one day things will go back the way they were with sony's leadership

I believe Sony is the only company suitable to dominate the market, with a fair marketshare in the hands of good competition of course, gaming as we know it was shaped by the Ps1 and Ps2, both platforms that were cheap at launch and had lots of games and third party support, variety peaked with the Ps2, the system has a game or many games for everyone it wasn't overflowing with first person shooter and with sony leading any developer was able to make any kind of games no matter what genre they wanted to sell It'd have room and opportunity in the Playstation two, now with nintendo and microsoft leading everything good gaming had went down the toilet, anything not aimed for family or inexperienced video game players doesn't sell well, games like Mad world are a fine example of that, I heard it sold around 77K in the united states while games like wii fit, easily broke the million mark, people paying to play online with their xbox and downloading maps and stuff that should be either free or available on the retail copy from day one is a practice even some of sony's devs are imitating nowadays sadly, I remember the good days when everything could be found on a reasonably priced and friendly playstation, now I feel that people walk into stores thinking that there's just as much to get from a nintendo wii, and then a few months after they realized the truth nobody told them, there's actually not that much on it.

The day sony made the mistake of over featuring the Ps3 and began to weaken gaming did along with them, maybe one day things will go back to normal and sony with a Ps4 or a Ps5 will take over the reigns of the industry to put back the right way like they did with the original PlayStation? Maybe my kids will play something worthy and stimulating instead of pointlessly jumping around the living room with a controller.

Just look at the ps2, a $15 hardware being sold for a rediculous $100 price tag, Sony should stay in third place or even second but not first. They're still arrogant as it is.

As a matter of fact, it Was. Honestly, Look at the N64, it has pearls and diamonds, quite a few but nowhere near as much as the vast amount of killer apps the Ps1 just kept spamming yearly, it was a beast, those were the good times, look at the wii and the Xbox360 now? at least somethingof our good memories lives on within the realms of the PsP, twisted metal, metal gear solid, *tears* FF7 crisis core, Star Ocean, Parasite Eve, tekken :( why sony...why did you let this happen

Sony stumbled out of the blocks this gen, but in hindsight it has done them more good i think especially if you are a gamer, no one wants a monopoly from any company. the threat from microsoft is what fuels the plethora of awesome games that gamers are getting.

I am sorry, but I dont think you make sense. Sony is incentivating and funding niche and creative projects that most likely will not sell very well. They are not "requesting" back the money they invested. If they really wanted to do that they would finace mainstream games (like KZ2, but we all know that it didn't turn out very well). But look at Heavy Rain. It's a niche game that almost everyone knows that will flop sales-wise, but sony it's still investing milions of dollars on it. In my opinion, yes, they deserve credit.

Yes, I'm serious. The gaming industry would be just fine if Sony left. I own a PS3 and it's mainly a blu-ray player for me. :)

Developers would just get re-hired by another company and gaming would continue as normal.

I believe Sony is the only company suitable to dominate the market, with a fair marketshare in the hands of good competition of course, gaming as we know it was shaped by the Ps1 and Ps2

Sony never made gaming as it should be. They certainly contributed to it, but they had their fair share of flaws as well. Face it, no company "perfected" gaming alone.

In all due honesty, Sony and their devs, third party or not did, only because of Sony's leadership, how come we're full of shovelware ang trash like never before the first gen sony slumps from their dominant position? the laws of market nature were broken by sony itself with the Ps3 pricing strategy

[QUOTE="colosion"] Well, then we shall credit them. Without that money, indie devs would have their lifes complicated. colosion

with that logic, we might as well credit banks and lending institutions for giving loans to indie devs

are they not 'funding progressive movements' just like sony?

I am sorry, but I dont think you make sense. Sony is incentivating and funding niche and creative projects that most likely will not sell very well. They are not "requesting" back the money they invested. If they really wanted to do that they would finace mainstream games (like KZ2, but we all know that it didn't turn out very well). But look at Heavy Rain. It's a niche game that almost everyone knows that will flop sales-wise, but sony it's still investing milions of dollars on it. In my opinion, yes, they deserve credit.

um... they take a cut of the profits AND they own the ip for future royalties...

sony is in it to make money and to push their business forward, not gaming. just like MS and Nintendo...

If Sony's Playstation 3 is "gaming as it's supposed to be" then I don't want to be a gamer anymore. A massively overpriced system designed to push a movie format into my home, and constantly pitched with a holier-than-thou attitude has no place in my vision for a better gaming landscape. - Gaming as a whole will learn from Sony's market failure. A decade from now, no one is going to look back and go "poor Sony". The Wii is annoying, but it's not the future. The Playstation line isn't the future either.

Sony themselves should have learned this very lesson from mistakes of the past. 3DO, NeoGeo, and Jaguar tried to market expensive consoles on the promise of "gaming power like never before". And look how those turned out.

sony's ps1 and ps2 had more shovelware than any other system before... the Wii has taken the throne in that regard, but the point is that stuff like this was ushered in by sony

No, your just a Sony fanboy whos upset they arent winning in either games or sales. The xbox gots slapped around by the PS2 but now that the 360 has matched the PS3, even beating it in alot of areas, its hurting your feelings. Microsoft have shown this gen that they can lead the gaming industry just as well/better than Sony.

Well said... the PS3 was indeed designed around pushing a movie format and reducing the price of the Cell. They want the Cell in all of their tv's/electronics and a bluray player in every living room....

They've been at the forefront of gaming technology for years (DX). It's about time that they started packaging it in a small affordable console...

This gen is simply one of many, watch sony bounce back with to the top spot with the only thing they need A CHEAP playstation at launch. The games are a given, they always deliver 8) look at the Ps3, its a masterpice, too expensive i agree but it is

one thing is for sure this gen suks compared to previous gen.PSP107
Maybe you own the wrong system and the wrong games. First of all your name has PSP in it... that alone shows your bad taste.
