http://www.megatonik.com/2008/04/20/mike-capps-says-epic-games-wont-ever-make-a-game-for-the-wii-we-go-forward-not-back/

Epic Games' president, Mike Capps, reiterated what Epic has previously said in an interview with IGN, stating that Epic won't ever be developing games for the Wii. It's not about the success of the platform to him, but what can be done on it. When asked whether there would ever be a time when Epic would be forced to give in and create a game for the Wii, Capps said, "no, we go forward, not back. It makes more sense for us to invest in the next-generation tech."

As for why he believes the Wii has become so popular, he says it's like a virus that just keeps spreading:

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. Obviously there's a large number of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games but I'm still waiting for that one game that makes me play it.

Waiting for that one game... They haven't heard of Super Mario Galaxy or Super Smash Bros. Brawl ? :o

And it's funny they compare it to a virus, when it's pretty much how Gears got all that attention.

I don't think they're the only developer with that mentality, at least with a lot of their bigger franchises.

He speculated on his own views why he thought it became so popular, he didn't say majority/most in his comments.

ouch! Why are so many devs who aren't developing on the Wii so bitter about it. Why can't they just say "The Wii is doing great but we want to develop for the more powerful consoles", instead of spewing such bitter resentment all the time.

Wii Sports > Gears of War? I don't think so. That is what he is referring to. People play Wii Sports and non replay value games like MP3 and SMG. The only game with replay is SSBB and you can just play Melee and have the same experience.

Hasn't Epic only made FPS games? Isn't the Wiimote the best method of control when it comes to FPS games on consoles? Doesn't that contradict the statement of "No, we go forward, not back. It makes more sense for us to invest in the next-generation tech."?

Furthermore, at least the gimmick is gameplay, and not graphics, right, Mr. Capps? ;)

"non replay value games"? Funny way of saying "single player games." So you're basically saying that he's bashing the Wii because of it's lack of racing, fighting, sports, and FPS fragfest games . . . I mean those are basically the most popular multi-player type games and the Wii is represented in all of them (Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, Madden/Pro Evo, Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, etc.) even though not that strongly as it focused more on single player and local multiplayer.

Nope

And it makes sense to a certain degree. All of Epics games are usually M rated and have a strong multiplayer component. Those are things that just arent common the Wii.Not to mention the woes of downgrading the UE3 to run on the Wii.

Graphical upgrades is standard evolution in gaming. To call graphical upgrades a gimmick you're essentially call the entire gaming market a huge gimmick.

As for the Wiimote being the "best" (misleading word considering there is really only two options on consoles), I wouldn't call it the best. That's purely subjective. Technical graphics are not subjective.

Just like how controller upgrades is a standard evolution in gaming. Just look at how controllers have evolved over time. That immediately affects the way one plays the game and interacts with it.

I'll take Epic's words with some salt. Their last few speeches were, for a lack of a better word, overexaggerated.

Anyways, they're more of an engine developer rather than a game developer so it does make sense to develop for systems with with a comparable power level. Can't say I'm going to cry over them not developing a game for the Wii though since I've started to care less about shooters.

hate to say it but i agree. The only time my Wii is on is when an exclusive game comes out. After i played it, its on the shelf, collecting dust, along with my Wii. Ps3 and 360 however, its a completely different ball game.

I can understand not wanting to develop on the Wii because Epic Games' games have always been very "tech-heavy"...

But, virus?!? Is anybody at Epic Games capable of making a statement that doesn't blow everything out of proportion?

Maybe... its for the better. Could you imagine the pop-in the Wii would have with textures as the game loads up.

:P Sorry, couldn't resist. Its terrible seeing that in GeoW and UT3. I'm just amazed at how much Epic has been saying lately. It seems like they are getting cocky or something. But that may just be my own perception of the company. :?

I take everything everyone says with a grain of salt these days. Plus I like salt ;)

Nintendo sure sells lots of games to these people that don't play their Wiis. Not doubting that some people out there buy a Wii and don't play it very much, but its been that way with all consoles since the beginning of time.

MetroidPrimePwn

no, also consider this: would any of their rehashes of UT be fun if it wasnt 'tech-haevy'

wound gears have been fun if it wasnt 'tech-heavy'

the answer is N.O.

the only reason most people play/like epics games is because it is all shiney and pretty

nothing but rehashes

gears 2 = gears 1 with minor tweaks just like UT2k3 = UT1 with better graphics/vehicles added

They go forward, huh? Well, I'd have to say that UT3 didn't go too far forward from UT2004 and UT1999, and actually went several miles backward in terms of the awful menus. Then again, Epic is mostly into developing new engines with more bells and whistles than the last ones, and the weaker hardware of the Wii would hold them back in that regard. In any case, it's not like I have a Wii to play Epic's games anyway, as that's what I have my new PC for(that is, if I were even the slightest bit interested in playing a new Epic game). The Wii is for Nintendo's killer apps and maybe those of a few third-parties.

Right... You think if they wanted they couldn't make a wii game... I don't have a wii, but I've played a wii and found it to be extremely shallow, it's like a magic trick, it's cute in the beginning, then you slowly figure it out, and it's not so nice anymore. It's seriously limited, say what you want about it but you can't deny it's limitations.

thats not true at all, it can do all the things the other 2 do

except its shading and all that has to be custom made for the games

the x360 and ps3 they just use a generic program that does it for them

Well, at least they took a stance, and i can respect them for that. They could totally sell out and try and make a quick buck downgrading games, or making shovelware for the wii, just because they know it has the higher install base, but instead they chose to keep pushing the limits of their tech and in a way i find that respectable.

The 360 has the highest attach rate in the industry, which proves fanboy comments wrong.

Good that a developer has seen sense to consider the quality of the games they make rather than how much money they make because of it. I'm talking about the Wii's third-party of course, I don't see a single third-party title pushing the Wii to its' limits anyway, and a developer like Epic definately won't want to take a step back by limiting the possibilities of their games to the Wii.

If thats the case why doesn't he just develope a game he would like for the Wii?.......Oh waite I know why he wont, he's just a narrow minded fanboy.

Brawl is a much different experience than Melee, its like saying why buy Halo 3 when you can get the same experince from Halo 1 or 2.

It's blaringly obvious that Epic doesn't know a thing about gameplay. Not every company has millions of $$$$ and huge developement teams at their disposal. What the Wii does is bring down these costs, and the size of the teams. This allows for more experimentation, new franchises, new experiences, ect.

Where's the creativity Epic? You can't even imagine any possibilities? If you haven't found a game you like wouldn't that make more sense to jump into that market and take control? If games were made fun only by "next-gen tech" graphics, why do people still play games of the past? Why do millions of people play free independant games and love them? Why do people play Xbox Live Arcade games? Why does the PS2 keep selling? Why? Because gameplay, that's why... Maybe you should take notes from Valve, they know how to innovate.

"Urr ya well basically we are a big bunch of dunderheads and we are too lazy to make a different engine ye so what we do is only make games on consoles whos graphics are same, because we are dumb." There you go Epic, just admit it. I'm not bothered anyway, I don't want any of their "awesome" games like Gears of War, Unreal Tournament or...urrrm....urr....bobbetybob

That pretty much said it all...

IMHO ;)

He's right to an extent.. I bought one and got rid of it after 1 month(just wasn't my cup-o-tea..), But that's not to "knock" anyone who still enjoys it. He's thinking about this from a developer perspective... a once PC ONLY developer perspective.. Those guys always try and push the envelope in their games.. With the wii you pretty much hit a brick wall before you even start developing for it(exaggeration but you know what I mean). Besides I don't think they'll get the sales numbers they're looking for on the wii platform (especially with the type of games they develop).
