what i mean is that has any game that was hyped as a game killer ever actually done it.

My example would be blue dragon hyped to be final fantasy killed and in the end it was not.

not trying to be sarcastic here just want some examples

Forza 2 was GT4 killer.

Street Fighter was a Karate Champ killer.

yea i was pretty much thinking that but it just seems like i come into these fourms all the time and there is always this HALO WILL FLOP KILLZONE FTW thread or BLUE DRAGON PWNS FINAL FANTASY but i never really remeber any games living up to that promise. the poster above me does have a point with street fighter but i dont see how forza 2 could be a GT4 killer since GT4 was last gen.

Believe it or not, Halo was not the killer ap when xbox was about to launch. Most game sites & mags thought DOA was going to sell the system lol.

Yet Halo is the killer and still is.

Grandia for the Saturn. When it launched, everybody in Japan said it was the FFVII killer. and even some American/European review sites like GS got caught in the bandwagon.

Quite ridiculous to attack a certain game in a review, if you ask me.

That was just a tongue-in-cheek comment. Earlier this year forums were a buzz about how Gran Turismo sucks, Forza is the new champ, Forza is the GT killer, etc, etc based on the release of Forza 2. It was as foolish to compare new and old tech back then as it is now.

Honestly, I cannot remeber a game that was hyped to be a franchise "killer" that actually lived up to it's hype. In hindsight we can look back and see how one franchise may have improved upon another (Streets of Rage vs Final Fight) or just blew out the competition (WOW vs FFXI, Everquest and every other non-korean MMO). But to say that some random game is going to kill off a well established franchise is ridiculous.
