Hello friends,

So i have been thinking something. I see back in early 90s, there was no technology that support 3D or other than anything sidecrolling.

I see absolutely no difference here except graphics.

then i see many genre evolved once gaming went full 3D, side scroll shooters evolved towards FPS and third person shooters, side scroll action games evolved into third person and open world action games, 2D platfomers evolved into 3D platformers and so fourth. even FPS evolved from not supporting Free mouse look to having deep story telling and can explore anything etc.

but what about fighting games? they have been stuck in 1991. they are still side scroll 1 on 1 fight. either 2D fighters or 3D fighters. I played plenty of fighters back in days used to like Street fighter II back in days because it was unique game of its time and also one of the best one. but any other game in series is not as good. be it SF, be it MK, be it KOF, they all stuck in side scroll fighting. MK evolved into story driven fighting series which i can appriciate but sadly core gameplay elements suck compare to street fighter.

My idea: let fighting games evolved into either first person or third person 1 on 1 fist fight combat game and have deep story telling of movie of Enter the dragon type starting bruce lee.

imagine if new street figher games are third person fighters with todays technology and capcom are not indie. they are billionairs and can afford something.

whats your take on this? lets discuss

I don't give a shit about the story, but would prefer third person view. With bigger, taller arenas. Asian martial arts movies always have these elaborate setpieces. I don't see why I have to be stuck on some boring flat little square.

This kind of first person fight can make game more immersive.

I just finished MK11 and SKIPPED through 99% of the cutscenes (story) because who gives a **** about the story, you're there to PLAY a game not WATCH it.

@i_p_daily: I like the story in MK11.

As for the rest of the thread, I love fighting games, MK, Street Fighter, SouCalibur, Dead or alive, you name it, fighting games in general do not need to evolve nor it needs to be state-of-the-arts graphics, make a good quality fighting game and that's all their is to it. No first-person-view, no 3D arena cause it doesn't work and keep it 2D. I played tons of fighting games in my lifetime and nothing really needs to evolve and 3D was a failure cause it doesn't work.

I didn't say it was good or bad, just that I skipped it, and you never did answer my question from another thread in how much of the Krypt did you unlock?

I unlocked it all except for the 3 stages of Shang Tsung's tomb :(

in 1998, Half life told excellent story without any kind of cutscene. story do matters in games but you only play racing games so i see you wont care about story and narratives and characters.

Hmmm the only thing I play is racers and yet here I am talking about MK11 to dav, so the only thing that hasn't evolved is your brain and that's because it can't evolve if you don't have one to begin with casual4ever.

@i_p_daily: You are so right, I forgot to answer your question, sorry.

The Krypt is a freaking mess due to random loot. Anyhow, I've cleared the Krypt multiple times, both originally and recently and am still missing alot of collectibles. I am still missing 2 recipes, 1-2 Character items per (non-DLC) character, and several other items as well. I've been getting nothing but augments for the last 1 million or so koins. I'm probably going to end up resetting every chest in the krypt and opening everything again, after my next million koins. I been hitting the Krypt Slot Shrine machine from time to time.

In your case, I wouldn't bother with the Krypt. It's not even worth the time and effort. I could spend the time, trying to find remaining pieces in The Krypt, playing another video game. I would not have minded if there were a cap. I have seen people on MK11 forums saying that they have gone through The Krypt about twenty times, and they still cannot obtain every missing item. I bet NRS will "fix" The Krypt once the game is towards the end of its life cycle.

Fighting games are already third person. A first person fighting game just sounds clumsy in execution. It would make more sense if it was VR. Fighting games don't "need" to evolve. You don't change something that works just cause.

Yes.

Doom 1 and Doom 2 didnot have free mouse look, platforming elements, grappling, and on and on. Doom 3 evoled into excellent horror game too.

my point is. Fighters are still stuck in 1991. just 2 men in side scroll beating each other and still using same haduken moves.

Fighting games has its evolutions. Street fighter back then only has 2 button, punch and kick now have multiple combos and counters.

Platform fighting games like smashbros and arcadey 3d fighting like powerstones.

thats not the point my friend. in 1991 there was no 3D technology and every game has to be side scroll. now you have techonology and freedom. make fighting games in third person prespective instead of side scroll, thats my point.

I dont think TC knows what he is talking about.

Fighting games have evolved and tried new things.

Dragonball Z budaki experimented with a 3D plane you could fight in, Tekken Tag and Marvel vs Capcom introduced tag team elements, the insane amount of combos you can perform now in any fighting game.

Advances are out there, you just have to play more than street fighter. I think your thread should be "Street Fighter has not changed at all" Because if you actually play more games in the genre you will find variety and growth.

EDIT*

EVEN YOUR COMPARISON PICTURES SHOW A CHANGE!

The newest street fighter games introduced power meters and special move indicators, you didn't have that in 2

Fighting games have definitely evolved. If you think that MK I is the same as MK XI, you're crazy. Same for Street Fighter and so on. With that said...

...I'd like a bit more diversity.

For starters, bring back Jade Empire. Incorporate a really fleshed-out combat system with different stances, styles, and techniques. Then make it a really awesome RPG experience as well. This way it would play like a fighting game, but it wouldn't be your typical MK/Tekken/Street Fighter stuff.

Blend genres together. First-person fighting games are rare and sometimes odd, but they tend to be really immersive at the same time.

Fighting games were one of the first genres to make the jump to 3D polygons (second only to racing games), and the first genre to feature 3D polygon player characters, paving the way for the 3D revolution of the '90s. In just a matter of two years, fighting games went from this...

Street Fighter II (1991)

...To this:

Virtua Fighter (1993)

Also, your suggestion of a first/third-person fighting game is something that has already been done plenty of times by the Dragon Ball franchise:

Dragon Ball Z: VRVS (1994)

Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout (1997)

Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 2 (2003)

If you look beyond Street Fighter, then you'll realize that fighting games have already done plenty of evolving and diversification.

There was a lot of experimentation for a while. Bushido Blade had a first-person option back in '95, Psychic Force had characters fly around, even Street Fighter had a 3D offshoot called EX. But in a lot of cases, inovation didn't really mean better. So most fighters disappeared or went back to 2D (with a few notable exceptions). Mortal Kombat alone cronicles the trend starting out 2D, then doing 3D badly, then doing 3D a little better, then going back to 2D and finally getting genuinely good.

I guess what I'm saying is, the 2D fighter has stuck around for so long because it just works.

If you want your Fighting games to be successful for the long term they need to be designed for the Esports community. SF5 despite only selling 3 million copies still has an extremely active community to this day.

Mortal Kombat is the only fighting game series I play, and it has most definitely evolved, immensely, since the 90s. And not just graphics, or with the cinematic story modes, either. The variety of fighting styles for each character, move sets and combos, special moves, everything has grown significantly with pretty much every entry in the series. They even went 3D with the environments back in the day, with Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon. You could sidestep attacks, rotate around your opponent, and walk around the whole arena, with many arenas having multiple sections you could take the fight into. It was freakin sweet, and I kinda wish they had stuck with it. But even since going back to the traditional 2D fights, it's much more evolved than the OG arcade games.

So you've hung all the heads and opened up Shang Tsungs tombs? that's a lengthy process. Its said that they contain all skins, openings, etc with no consumables or augments.

I've bought every chest (except for about 5 you need hearts for) and used every soul, and are nowhere near collecting everything. I'm playing other games at the moment and will go back to open Shangs tombs at a later stage as I've only hung about 4 heads and need 10 to just open stage one.

I wish I played it when it first came out as there was a glitch that let you open up his tomb by hanging just one head.

I see a big difference... the characters are on opposite sides.

Anyways though... what else do you want them to do? Nevermind the combo systems, in depth list of moves, relatively larger rosters (this doesn't apply in all cases), extra game modes, online modes, DLC, alternate costumes, more options, in depth campaigns, new systems in play like ex moves, shadow blocking, frame data... etc, and things like sound quality, frame rates, balancing, and timely patches to fix pressing issues.

I actually liked Mortal kombat movie better than its game counter part. here shang tsung is best he have been. the character liu kang was more resemble burce lee, christopher lambert as raiden is more charismatic who dont fight but being a mentor.

Also, foot movement is extremely important in martial arts, so it seems really backwards to restrict that movement to two dimensions in most of them, another reason I would prefer third person view.

@ezekiel43: You're just as clueless as Ghost when it comes to fighting games it seems, impressive I guess?

And full-on jumping and climbing too, Jackie Chan-style. Actually, I'd probably just throw a bunch of players into an arena together, which would be possible when it's no longer stuck in two dimensions with the cam really close to just two players.

Nothing wrong with wanting that type of game. It would just be a different take, not really an evolution.

Ultimately, fighting games are about space control. The visual of two combatants throwing punches, kicks, etc. just happens to be a fitting window dressing.

The traditional FG isn't trying to emulate real fighting (which is far from glamorous or fun), or even the choreographed fights that you'd see in a martial arts flick.

It's about two players vying to control space with their given tool sets. And in that sense there is nothing "backwards" about the 2d space at all.

That's almost like assuming that Tetris would be better off for being in a 3d space with bricks that fall more realistically. Or that Chess would be a better game for doing away with grid specific movement and having the pieces engage in battles.

You could have some games like those, maybe they'd be fun in their own way, but wouldn't make the former obsolete.

I truly hope he's just a massive troll. Because if he's really like this...good Lord.
