fun? whats that? we play games for the hardcore graphics, that are so hardcore your eyes are going to fall out.
even if the games this gen have become more easy and casual as in past gens

Hahaha. Now that is some fun post! I get your point.Gaming now a days has become too hardcore for my blood. In my time(NES era), games where played for fun.

Let me give you an example : When I played Megaman 4 and TMNT 2, those games were fun and didn't require much to play them. You didn't need a HD tv, some monhly subcription crap(ala xbox live). Back then, games where simple!!!Cbotback then, people barely knew about the internet.
yeah, good times. >_>Good choices, though I didn't play Faxanadu. Pretty tough weren't they?

Games like SMB 2, SMB 3, TMNT2, TMNT 3, the megaman series. Those were fun games. Not force to achieve stupid achievement crap.Cbotum... never been to an arcade? leaderboards are just worldwide arcade top 10s
I hate playing games to compete with the hardcore crownd. Cbotthen don't compete
I don't mind the leaderboards, it's the hardcore players I hate. You know, those who spend days of playing their games 24 hours straight!!CbotAre you really complaining about people who play games more solidly than you? If you dont like competing with them, then dont compete with them. Gaming has not really changed. There will always be hardcore players and casual players.Devs have started to stop artificially lengthen their games, though, which is not a bad thing imo. That is about it.
Even though not much sense is being made here. It's the opposite when it comes to games in general since many are getting toned down to gain mass appeal and plenty of casual non-gamers are getting themselves involved with gaming. Now what makes it seem to be "more hardcore" is that we now have a bunch of loud posers who like to call themselves "teh HxC" because they can list a lot of game on a forum while they idle online games.
Now
1- What is wrong with achievements? They add new goals to games and act as unlockables. They make me go and do things in games I'd never try normally and it's quite enjoyable achieving them
2-What's wrong with those real hardcore gamers that play 24/7? I mean if they enjoy it and are better than you in a game, is that all there is to hate about them?

You general complaints seem to be about gaming creeping more and more towards the higher-end, with more and more complexity and useless chaff. In other words, you yearn for the return of the arcade?
 Definitely too hardcore for me. I'm way too paranoid about any system to leave it running when I'm not using it.And a lot of ppl idle online games to boost their playtime, stats, unlock achievements among other things.

Leaderboards ruined gaming. Instead of the 10 best players in your area (and the occasional challenger), now you have a bunch of players too obsessed with their rank/position/score to relax. And god forbid you just want to relax and have fun; these jerks will complain because you're not hardcore enough. Even with a matchmaking system like Live that lets you declare a preference for a recreational game, you still end up stuck with these hypercompetitive alpha nerds.lowe0
This is what I hate about online gaming. There's no real feeling of an enjoyable atmosphere when you play online, it dosn't feel like a social activity, and it should be. There's too much emphasis on skill matching, leaderboards, kill counts, ranking, achievements, etc. None of this really matters. It's all just digitally represented figures that give the player some bizare feeling that they have earned some kudos. What they don't understand is that no one cares. No one is impressed becausethey can play a video game well, all that says to me is thatthey are trying too hard. Games have allways meant to be about fun, even sports which have a greater competitive edge are meant to be about fun, and they are. Gamers have missed the point with online gaming if you ask me.

You don't need an HDTV or Xbox Livenow.
I can playdamn near every Xbox 360 game without an HDTV or internet access.
They simply enhance the experience, like the silly peripherals the NES had.

Add to that the fact that most single player portions of games IMO have gotten much weaker, with the primary focus on online multiplayer. Yes, I would rather play with real people vs. dumb AI ... but when for most games you're overwhelmed with people whose purpose is not fun, well - it's not fun.
I agree to the most part with TC, but have found much of the arcade fun on the Wii and am willing to play lower res games if it means I enjoy it twice as much.

I don't know about you but I enjoy online matches and being competitive so I'm not really sure what you mean by "lost" unless it's a generalization. Sure there are some annoying "Srs business" players that care more about a score than anything but they aren't any more annoying than the awful ones that ruin a game.games back then seemed difficult, but they were driven by stories and exploration. Each event, story arc is unique making themfunrather thanjust difficult. While today games are driven by point systems, ladders, leaderboards. You dont play games for exploration anymore.. you play them to get more points so you can see your s/n on top of a leaderboard :(
I get what the TC is saying. Back in the day, you put in a game, played for a while, had some fun, then turned it off or went on to another game. Playing a game was entertaining, a way to pass time, with the only real goal being beating the game. Now with trophies and achievements we have these added things we're supposed to do to extend the game or spend tons of time online trying to prove who the better player is.
The enjoyment from playing a game should be that it's a cool game to play, not these various other things that are basically a way to compare your gaming skills to those of other gamers.

Sure, playing well can make something more fun, but when players and designers insist on forcing players to play in a super competitive fashion then suddenly the whole atmosphere is gone. Everyone who isn't at the top of the leaderboard is a noob, anyone who makes a mistake is a noob, anyone who is in the other team is a noob. It's repetitive. Aslong as players respect each other and play ina fair and resonable fashion then it will remain to be fun. In your average game that is not the impression I get from alot ofthe players. Not when they scream and shout at other players, and order them around like some mad dictator.
Also what do you mean by "lost"? I don't see that word in my post :?
Ha, its too casual now. Every dev is now trying to help out the mentally challenged. SAGE_OF_FIRE
You might want to re-think that statement. You just said non-gamers are mentally challenged .

I don't have a problem playing with random ppl depending on the game. I mean sometimes I'd want to play with friends while others it wouldn't really matter. It really depends. As for being super competitive well this kind of mentality has been on gamers since long ago, in older games like fighters, shooters, racing games..basically most multiplayers and IIRC leaderboards weren't created when online was popularized.
When online gaming came into play the whole "noob" and competitive mentality was instilled by gamers, it's not like developers where the only ones who truly pushed for this. And it's not like everyone who cares about the scoreboard or their stats isn't having fun, I mean I personally like to see how well I am doing in a game based on numbers.
Besides regardless of all this, it doesn't really affect the single player experience. If you don't want to be competitive you can always play the SP or the MP casually with a friend.
And well you said There's no real feeling of an enjoyable atmosphere when you play online, it dosn't feel like a social activity, and it should be" Basically implying they have lost the fun aspect which I don't consider it this way.

Of course people were allways like that, but it's with the advent of online gamingthat it's come to light on a mass scale.
I never said it was soley the developers who caused it. I'm not talking about people who are just curious about scoreseither, I'm really talking about the competition between points, the obssesion over increasing your scores by about 3 points just to reach the top of the leaderboard. That's not fun.
I'm not talking about single player though, I would enjoy online if people took it alot less seriously. That's all I'm saying.
I don't enjoy online games when there's an unpleasant atmosphere. For that reason I feel the fun is missing from alot of online games. Not allways, but when you join a game and people are being offensive across mics, andyou get kicked for making a single mistake or just because the host dosn't like you, and no one is getting along, that's when I stop having fun. It's that sort of atmosphere that puts me off online gaming alltogether. A good communitycanget around that problem, and that's where the social aspects of online gaming really shine. Communities arn't allways good though, and they are almost never accesible.
Gaming now a days has become too hardcore for my blood. In my time(NES era), games where played for fun.

1. Games are played for fun now as well.
2. Hardcore doesn't mean "not fun".
