So I recently bought the GOTY Edition of Oblivion, and well, in all honestly, it's boring and monotonous. Five hours in and I have yet to feel like I'm actually having fun (coming from someone whon liked FO3 and NV ALOT). The combat bores me, it really just seems like button mashing, and makes me realize how much I miss the VATS system in this clunky engine. Seriously, blocking and attacking are so clunky. Leveling up seems so out there, I never feel like I'm actually getting stronger. The quests so far have been pretty boring, and I'm in bad need of a house to store my stuff in because I'm overencumbered very often. All that aside, this game just isn't fun to me. And I haven't played Skyrim, so I would hope that's a better experience.

Well skyrim is better, but that fact that you like VATS makes me think you're a troll.

I legitimately like the VATS system - keeps the flow going in an otherwise clunky game.

All the bethesda games have pretty crappy combat. The leveling is bad too, but if you're on the pc you can fix all of these things. Or if you want to play a different game, then just download Nehrim.

Oblivion was never very good. It was decent, but it's easily the worst TES game in the series. The quests aren't interesting, the main quest isn't interesting, the combat is dull, and the graphics have not aged well at all. Spare yourself the agony and play Skyrim or Morrowind.

Oblivion is one of my favourite games of all time I must have played it for 100 hours+ but yea it really hasn't aged well. I can't reccomend Skyrim though it's just so boring I can't bring myself to play it anymore and I'm only 10 hours in.

The reason you feel like you're not getting stronger is because you are not. In fact you may be getting WEAKER as you level up because enemies scale with you. Also the world is basically rolling hills with the occasional forest thrown in. The only thing Oblivion really shines in is the guilds and the cities. IMO the cities in Oblivion are for the most part, bigger and more distinguished than the cities in Skyrim.

Oblivion aged poorly. Sell it and buy Skyrim instead. It's better out of the box, with more diverse dungeons, better music, better voice acting, better enemy types, you get the deal...

It aged better than Skyrim. Has better quest, better legal system and it forces you to WORK HARD in order to break the system and being overpowered -instead of letting you being overpowered and break the system without any effort as in Skyrrim-.

But to me both were execellent games; Is just that quest were better in Oblivion and the game harder which made it more appealing to me. I still play both.

oblivion is boring, 10 hours in and i traded it in, my first elder scrolls game too. the fact that dungeons are same everywhere, those stupid oblivion sections, and crap combat make the game a grindfest. however i still purchased skyrim because i know its not as boring especially without repetative dungeons and repetative oblivion gates. hopefully the dialong is not as boring either where im just skipping everything everyone says.

Haven't played the fallout games, but pausing the game every fight and going through the vat system sounds like it would get really old really fast.

ehh the only thing that redeems any bethesda game is the modding community...i wasnt a big fan of obvilion when i first played it (loved morrorwind) but after a few years of it being out and checking out the game of the year edition with a few choice mods(graphics lift mostly...but some magic and combat tweaks) honestly...oblivion+mods>>>skyrim...tho im waiting on skyrims expansions and some more mods before i get back into it

Oh, and OP I havent played Oblivion, but I played Skyrim and im in the same boat as you. I ran out day one to get Skyrim solely because I heard it was just like Fallout. (I also loved Fallout 3 and New Vegas).

Elder Scrolls just isnt the same as Fallout IMO. I find the world to be boring, monotinous, uninteresting, and just "been there, done that". That, and the gameplay is underbaked. The biggest thing is that the world of Elder Scrolls (IMO) just lacks the immersion that Fallout has.

VATS was a broken system because only headshots were needed, no reason to shoot anywhere else other than the head.

Not exactly. It's still a good, huge game, but Bethesda RPGs have evolved a lot since it came out. Great for it's time, and still great if you started playing it when it came out, but not so much if you just started.

Yeah that´s too bad. While I was never in love with the game, the mods helped it quite a bit. I remember the last time(and only time) I tried vanilla Oblivion after playing it modded--let´s just say the gaming time wasn´t very long.

Fixing the leveling system and equipment menu, to bumping up the graphics, the inclusion of new areas, a redifined combat system--with many features that now seem to appear in Skyrim: haven´t played it yet. Hell even fixing that damn map was a blessing.

As a rule, I'm not a big RPG player. Since I got Oblivion as part of the $20 Bioshock/Oblivion retail combo pack, I've started playing Oblivion. It doesn't seem too bad although I'm the wrong guy to ask.

mods kinda fix it but the faces...ugh they are ugly, they are barley even acceptable for a ps2/xbox game.

As for the rest, mods on the pc fix most issues but the game has not aged well. If you do a comparison between skyrim and that you would assume they were two different generations.

It aged poorly because Skyrim did everything it did and better.
