the game was clunky even in release. it hasnt aged well, not all. dat terrible combat. btw if it helps you: you can drop anything on any house/inn/building, I mean drop it on the floor it will ALWAYS be there. So I recently bought the GOTY Edition of Oblivion, and well, in all honestly, it's boring and monotonous. Five hours in and I have yet to feel like I'm actually having fun (coming from someone whon liked FO3 and NV ALOT). The combat bores me, it really just seems like button mashing, and makes me realize how much I miss the VATS system in this clunky engine. Seriously, blocking and attacking are so clunky. Leveling up seems so out there, I never feel like I'm actually getting stronger. The quests so far have been pretty boring, and I'm in bad need of a house to store my stuff in because I'm overencumbered very often. All that aside, this game just isn't fun to me. And I haven't played Skyrim, so I would hope that's a better experience.

It's definitely no Skyrim even with Qarl's mod (some images have it, some don't). But, It's okay to me.

I think he was reffering to the overall game not just the graphics.
No. It's a damn poor game.skrat_01
I hope you are referring only to it's state now, because at the time it was quite an amazing game and set the foundations for the superior Skyrim

Good choice! Skyrim is pretty much better than Oblivion in every single aspect and even adds some of it's own things into the mix. Plus the game is alot more intuitive and less fussy that Oblivion making it an easier experience for us RPG noobs.

to be fair, elder scrolls is really barely an RPG. its more like a first person dungeon crawler with a runescape-esque ability leveling system.[QUOTE="Bad-School-Girl"]the game was clunky even in release. it hasnt aged well, not all. dat terrible combat. btw if it helps you: you can drop anything on any house/inn/building, I mean drop it on the floor it will ALWAYS be there. Are you serious??:0So I recently bought the GOTY Edition of Oblivion, and well, in all honestly, it's boring and monotonous. What's wrong with VATS?
Bad-School-Girl
Oh, and OP I havent played Oblivion, but I played Skyrim and im in the same boat as you. I ran out day one to get Skyrim solely because I heard it was just like Fallout. (I also loved Fallout 3 and New Vegas).
Elder Scrolls just isnt the same as Fallout IMO. I find the world to be boring, monotinous, uninteresting, and just "been there, done that". That, and the gameplay is underbaked. The biggest thing is that the world of Elder Scrolls (IMO) just lacks the immersion that Fallout has.
Exactly! The world just isn't interesting to explore. And the gameplay makes it so much worse. oblivion world was terrible. I NEVER explored, hated when I had to WALK to a location instead of just using fast travel. never entered a single cave, too damn boring and hard, it doesnt help that monsters level with you and are usually godlike in front of you...seriously groups of more than 3 monsters would always be major rape for me.[QUOTE="skrat_01"]No. It's a damn poor game.OB-47

At the time it was a terribly flawed game that did absolutely nothing well other then giving players the opportunity to muck about a loosely simulated medieval fantasy world. Which is all the more glaring in retrospect.you dont have to use vats if you don't want toHaven't played the fallout games, but pausing the game every fight and going through the vat system sounds like it would get really old really fast.

Some parts of Oblivion weren't that good from the start i.e level-scaling, copy-paste environments and dungeons, fast respawning treasure and enemies.
Oblivion has not aged well.
Fallout 3 sucks.
Fallout: New Vegas is a masterpiece.
Replay New Vegas. It's better than Oblivion and Fallout 3.
That is all.
NeonNinja
I like this kid.
Seriously, the writing, the quests, the character and the world of NV are miles ahead of Fallout 3. The only thing that brings it down is it's kinda dated engine
Skyrim is quite a bit better. Oblivion was just trash.DragonfireXZ95Meh I preferred Oblivion.... But both are crap compared to Morrowind.
It aged very poorly on the consoles. It came out about 4 months after the 360 first launched. Now on the PC, that is a completely different story. With all the amazing high quality mods, you can make oblivion look and play better than skyrim.
Seriously, some of the graphics mods are insane, better than crysis even.

yup, same on skyrim, just drop anything anywhere, it never dissapears. there are also public chests, join a guild and use one of the chests they have in the rooms

Skyrim has that too just less noticable. I found around 330 locations on Skyrims maps and you will see that. You can't avoid that when having that many locations.
It shows its age in the sense that Skyrim improves upon it gameplay-wise in nearly every way. So especially if you've played Skyrim first, Oblivion will definitely seem like a step backwards. However, I still find it one of the most enjoyable games I have installed on my computer, and even after having played tons of Skyrim, I still feel an urge to go back to that game.
or buy a white van, and sit outside of a pre-school.Download some anime models. I have a feeling you'll like those.

Here's some advice in general, TC.
Just play the game and make up your own mind. As you can see some people like the game while others hate it, I don't know which boat I'm in (for one thing I don't have the game) but you could be in a completly different boat than the haters or in a different boat than the lifeboat likers. It's just varying tastes. What I will say is that no game is really timeless game unless you make it timeless; every game out there (unless every single sequel is crap but again that is varying opinions and tastes) has somehow aged rather poorly. It's just practically factual information really, every old game has old game mechanics that were new at the time sure but fastforward several years later when dozens or a couple of sequels had been made and play those and you will notice that the old games do indeed have old mechanics that worked back then, sure, but now...meh.
Also, System Wars is one place on GameSpot that has hatred towards certain games (for instance, SW is not really a big fan of Oblivion or GTA 4) so we're the wrong crowd to be asking. Play the game, I say, first play it and think of yourself as a 2006 player looking at this game for the very first time then skip over 6 more years and then determine how you feel it has aged. It's what I'm doing with Morrowind, I play it half as a 2002 teen looking at such a game for the first time and it's quite fantastic and then I skip ahead 10 years later and there are certainly things that have aged rather well but also things that have aged rather poorly. So it's all varying tastes and opinions, don't listen to the haters (or likers for that matter) and instead play the game and decide what to do afterwards. While it may sound like you're missing out on mods since you don't have the PC version you do get one bonus: You can return the copy.
Either way, it's a win-win or a win-lose depending on how the game is so, play it for yourself and see how it is. That is all.
With mods, it has aged extremely well. But otherwise it was pretty lousy, even at launch.
Every side quest in Oblivion is better than in Skyrim: Dark Brotherhood, Thieve Guild, Mague Guild, Fighter's Guild... is better that his counterpart in Skyrim, and Oblivion is still better game than any jrpg in the current generation -outside Dark Souls-.
Ondoval
The sidequests are terrible in Skyrim, true, way worse than Oblivion (and that says a lot).
The gameplay however still pales in comparison to Skyrim's.
the leveling system in Oblivion is far more flawed, i had to go and mod it to get any enjoyment out if itIt's basically the same thing as Skyrim. Obviously Skyrim has new things and it's better but in the core they are the same game. I don't understand why people like Skyrim but not Oblivion. Both are awesome.
