I got Half-Life 2 for Christmas nearly 5 years ago when I was 15. However, I just wanted it for Counter-Strike Source...

So recently I got Orange Box for $10 (because Steam is amazing like that), and I decided to actually play Half-Life 2's single player -- by far one of the most unique gaming experiences I've ever had in an FPS.

It's been almost 5 years since this game was released. The graphics still look nice, the physics are a blast, the gravity gun is hilarious, it's quite lengthy, the game somehow scared the crap out of me at several parts, and i've never really played a game quite like it.

somehow this game still feels clean and fresh -- and (not trying to start anything), im curious as to why people here talk about the single player of the Halo series more often, when they are just straight up arcade shooters. HL2 actually feels like an adventure, and I didn't even know what the story was about (lol).

play this game, spread the love.

Because this is a console dominant board. Even those who did play it for consoles were probably disappointed because of the pacing or thought it felt dated. It's by no means as fast a Halo CE's SP so that may be a turn off for a lot of console only gamers.

They don't talk about Halo's single-player more. When Halo is mentioned, it's usually about the multiplayer. Which I think might be unfair, because Halo: CE's campaign was as good as or better than HL 2's, in my opinion.

Rawr rawr rawr *foams at mouth* Halo CE's campaign was epic thinking back on it, I've had to play it like 15 times. It's just so fun and well thought out. It combined linear and open world shooting in some levels. Its a shame what happened to it.

That's for sure. Ultra-linearized and filled with moronic, unkillable AI buddies.

Agreed. I actually thought HL2 felt incredibly linear, but the guns, enemies, level design, story, and all that made it one of my top games ever. The Half Life series is in my top 5 games (Halo is not), but Halo CE did actually have one incredibly kick ass campaign. I played that with my brother, and that was some of the most fun I've ever had playing video games.

Definitely. I don't remember the name of the level, but it was snowy, and took hours to beat! And the first time through going across those bridges was almost impossible :D But that was my favorite level because of how large it was.

Hl2 was / is still a fantastic game. I like it alot. But when it was released i didn;t dig it that much.Acually i was kinda dissapointed because it was very different then the premise/setting/atmosphere HL 1 had. And HL 1 in my opinion is a absolute masterpiece. But after playing HL2 for a while it did eventually win me over.I very excited for HL1: Source and of course I cannot wait for the gaming gods @ Valve to announce HL 3. Episode 3 should be cool as well, I think it'll tie up alot of loose threads.

As for Halo CE, the single player campain was very entertaining but for some odd reasen every time i play Halo (no matter which one ) every thing about fells thrashy, cheap and plastic. I dunno i guess it lacks a certain atmosphere.

I've had games crash, and other various programs. I just decided my HDD was corrupted :( Bought a new one, and everything works! Though that's the last option you should choose.

When people say they like the story, they usually mean that they like the characters and dialog. The plot isn't all that special (although it does get interesting in the episodes).

For everyone having the HL.exe problem:

Go here and read this support page over at the official STEAM forums, it has something to do with AIM being installed. Either way, it's working for many people.

Yeah, the story is it's strong point to me, not that it has a weak point. Half Life 2 is about as close to perfect in a game as I've ever seen. I enjoy Halo just as much, but I'd score HL2 higher.

a couple years back I decided to jump into HL2, since everyone and their grandmother raved about it..... started playing.... the empty feeling you have, feeling all alone was interesting.... then finally I encountered "the bad dudes" (*pictures old NES cartridge graphic*) and the music queue'd up.... and I was like "HOLY **** this is the best FPS I've ever played"......

..... shortly thereafter I was bored to tears..... I just kept playing, well cuz I like to finish all my games, but it became so painfully boring to play..... I started to loath it.... I just quit playing, eventually formatted my comp, losing my save file... and refuse to put myself through that hell again just so I can say "yeah i beat it"

Funny. Half Life 2 came out on the X360. Guess we did get to play it. Didn't think much of it myself. Good game, a length i wish FPS where to this day but it wasn't leaps and bounds above the other pickings.

I prefered Halo: CE, the vehicle sections where far superior, the guns where far better and felt better to use with HL2 outside the grav gun they was all rather dull, the enemies where much better to fight against all in all it was much more engaging.

I'd match HL2 up against H2, very linear campaign. Ending was good tho, the super grav gun.

I'm surprised it took you so long to play it.

Anyway, yeah Half Life 2 still hold up remarkably well, and it will always be one of the greatest games around, like its predecessor.

One thing is certainly for sure, its design is dramatically different to all other shooters out there, which is why its stood out from the pack, and held up so well.

Truly one of the most influential and progressive games / series.

Yeah, it really is the staple of the genre - quite frankly it deserves it.

I'd rather replay Doom 1&2 with updated controls.

I respect your opinion, but in my book HL2 is a masterpiece in every way!

They don't talk about Halo's single-player more. When Halo is mentioned, it's usually about the multiplayer. Which I think might be unfair, because Halo: CE's campaign was as good as or better than HL 2's, in my opinion.

Halo CE's campaign was epic thinking back on it, I've had to play it like 15 times. It's just so fun and well thought out. It combined linear and open world shooting in some levels. Its a shame what happened to it.

That's for sure. Ultra-linearized and filled with moronic, unkillable AI buddies.

Agreed. - However in response to Tiefster Halo isn't open world, its as linear as a shooter can get. It just so happens the corridoors are large canyons. Open world level design? Operation Flashpoint fits the category. Halo was originally supposed to be an open world non linear game mind you. When it was re-developed for the Xbox things changed dramatically. - Anyway I agree the series went downhill. Halo 2 quite frankly sucked compared to its predacessor - not only did it mess up the pacing, vehicle physics, and level design, but showed some of the worst storytelling examples in such a big budget game. Halo 3 corrected flaws like the level design of its predacessor, but simply didnt achieve anything above the bar that had been raised by other shooters. That and it had some prety strong flaws of its own. Its a pity, the series since no.2 is essentially a multiplayer one - thats where the focus is so it seems. Anyway while Halo CE's design is much more simple than that of Half Life's, its still a blast to play. I still play Halo CE coop with friends nowadays, on the same launch Xbox and copy of Halo from 2001.

Oh boy, another thread mentioning Halo for no reason. Nobody even talks about the single player, and if they do they don't say it's the best out. Stop making s*** up just to troll.

Putting that aside, you don't understandwhy they would like it? OhI don't know, maybe an opinion? Not everyone prays to GameSpot everyday and takes their reviews as facts..

I agree, HL2 is vastly overrated.

yup, It still holds up pretty well today and I cannot see any shooter that was better it released in the fast few years (crysis comes close though). As far as story is concerned I agree it's not something great, but it's till good enough compared to standard stuff we see in FPS genre

Ya know I was really intrigued by the beginning, escaping that camp and stuff... but then you had to ride the jetski and stuff and I started losing interest.
