Sony has done nothing for the gaming industry at all that is new or innovative. Even the things they rip off end up being worse than the original (PSN, Killzone, PSASBR). Even the new controller is stealing ideas from the 360 and Wii-U controller. Sony really isn't needed for the gaming industry.

local play --- about as good as snes but n64 was better having 4 controller ports,    sony never learned that 2 controller ports was a last gen feature until ps3 lol yet hardly any one uses them  making ps3s local play irrelevent

little big planet karting/mod nation racers- both mariokart rip offs in fact i dont know why would sony need 2 kart racers to try to beat 1 lol

twisted metal was their only  original game - 

dont even tell me gran turismo is because top gear practically did racing on the snes ,  

and theres also other games like f1 series ,  nascar  ,  etc ,  all do the same thing gt tries to do ,    yet they do it better because they have a sense of speed which for some odd reason gt5 lacks even when you go 100 plus miles an hour it really feels like 55 mph or less 

and i remember sony boasting gt5 being the first game with 16 cars on track again wrong the very game i mentioned above featued 20 and thats on the snes 

and nascar has also had 20 cars for its 98-2000 seasons then boasting to life like fields of 43 as of 2002

so i would love some fanboys to come up and say  gt 5 did racing right lol

Innovation is largely overrated. Certain innovations do great, whilst others can simply bomb hard. That doesn't mean that they should just sit and stagnate, though.

Kinect is a combo of the PS camera and Wii motes in one device, MS just looked at PS2's bad online and expansion bay for an HDD and made their Xbox have a built in HDD and went with Xlive to make the cash$$ to build up enough $$$$$ to bring out the 360 early and try and beat Sony, but they failed. 

But to answer your question. 

Bluray, free online gaming, brought a lot of hardware to gaming with PS1 and PS2 that got gaming really going. MS asked Sony if they would let them join Sony in making Playstation systems and games and Sony turned them down. Sony is in control and don't forget that ever again. MS is a wanna be. They made online gaming a social thing and charged $50-$60 per year and make billions per year. They designed Xlive to make lots of cash off of their gamers to try and beat out Sony. They didn't do it for any other reason. It wasn't to be innovative.
