Innovation is largely overrated. Certain innovations do great, whilst others can simply bomb hard. That doesn't mean that they should just sit and stagnate, though.

Bluray, 4kTV, Walkman, the first camchorder, best digital camera on the market, best PCs, best console (PS4), free online gaming, and a lot more. There stands very good reasons why Sony is the best at hardware. MS does OS's and networking. Let's just leave it at that.Â

I love how the according to OP the dualshock is clearly a rip-off of Nintendo and 360 designs (despite predating the 360...) and yet Kinect is not a rip-off of the EyeToy. :roll:Fossil-
Kinect is MS's idea of combining the eye toy and the Wii motion controls into one device. They made the first Xbox to improve on what the PS2 didn't pull off well with it's HDD expansion bay and limited online network gaming by making a built in HDD standard and creating xlive socialized gaming that they knew would bring them in the huge cash they needed to make a go at Sony. They tried their darndest with the 360 bringing it out a year ahead and having it lower in price and having an easier to develop for system. But as time went on Bluray caught on and the PS3 got netflix and the console dropped in price to match the 360 and then the PS3 started outselling the 360 worldwide and caught up and tied it essentially. Sony meanwhile was taking in all the negative criticism about why their console didn't win. They talked with game devs, social gaming experts, and many areas to improve with the PS4. They then strategized just how to implement all the best things into a console that gamers truly liked and wanted in a console and that game devs would like to see in order to develope more easily and quickly for it. They also sought after the best possible hardware and architecture at an affordable price. They bought cloud to handle their online gaming and are now in the process of finishing up the newly made user interface and design of the console itself and are on target to release the first half of Nov 2013 with 2 sku's at $429 & $529. Just like they had the 20gb PS3 and 60gb PS3 at launch. They knew they couldn't afford to have MS have an advantage again and they needed to do what it takes to succeed.Â

DVD playability on a console was something that Sony Innovated
And we have Nintendo to thank for screwing Sony over by signing an agreement to have Sony make the optical drive for the Nintendo Playstation. Nintendo went behind Sony's back and went to Phillips and let them do it instead. This left Sony hanging having designed the optical drive for it and Sony decided to then make the Playstation console themselves and thus Sony began their rein on the console market by making their consoles appeal to more people than Sega and Nintendo did for years. And now we just saw Sony surprised by MS and Nintendo this gen causing Sony to really look again at what they needed to do to succeed again.Â
PSN: rip off of XBL
Move: Rip off of Wiimote
Killzone: Rip off of Halo
PSASBR: Rip off of SSB
Controller: Rip off of SNES controller
Uncharted: Rip off of Gears/Tomb Raider
Sony has done nothing for the gaming industry at all that is new or innovative. Even the things they rip off end up being worse than the original (PSN, Killzone, PSASBR). Even the new controller is stealing ideas from the 360 and Wii-U controller. Sony really isn't needed for the gaming industry.

They have earned my love and respect. Something no company has ever done before.

PS2 supported hard drives before Xbox released. Cloud savingcame first on PS3, data storage from 3rd party USB memory sticks (360 didn't support these for years), retail games available for download (360's Games On Demand came later), Day 1 Digital, PSN pre-orders, a rental service- PlayStation Plus itself and by extension Automatic updates, Remote Play, slimming down of console hardware (has influenced MS and Ninty to do the same), OtherOS, KB+Mouse support (irrelevant now tbh), demo disks (PS1 days). Some of these might be wrong and again, it's really stuff that was brought to consoles for the first time than outright innovation the world has never seen before but there you go.
Outside of dual analogs I'd say not really. Certainly not on a level that has impacted the game industry.

SEGA was second to partner with Sony and turn their backs on them.Nintendo provided Playstation with the name and the controller is based on the SNES controller; SEGA was the one that convinced Sony to make the Playstation 3D instead of 2D.
