So, the ARMS Direct happened, and it gave a more detailed explanation of the game. With only about a month left until it's release, has the recent Direct sold you on the game? I've always been interested since it's January unveil, but I feel it'll be one of the first games I get for the Switch when I do get one.

Sure+I will put my money where my mouth is. I want new ips, since I don't read reviews, I stupidly, especially with Nintendo take a chance on new ips that would be geared towards me. Be it Quantum Break (did not like), Horizon (not liking so far, allegedly the game is about to get really good soon), or Splatoon (well that was good).

I was pretty sure that I was going to get it.

Now I'm 99% sure and the test punch will put the cherry on top.

I was going to get it either way because it sounded like quirky fun, but the Direct really touted all of the content in the game and then hit a home-run with the announcement of free updates for the game after launch. That made me go from being interested in playing the game, to being pretty sure it'll be a great game for someone like me.

I thought it looked half lame before. Like a polished WiiSports boxing with a new skin or something. After the direct, I saw a pretty deep and really fun-looking fighting game instead. So yeah. I think I'm getting it now.

The demo will be what convinces me. I hate motion controls and doubt I'll be willing to drop another $80 for more joycons to do multiplayer on this.

Was never interested to begin with and do not understand the excitement beyond attributing it to the general reception of the Switch. Take away the Nintendo logo and put on EA or Ubisoft, this game has 10x less hype, even were it on the Switch.

Also am perplexed by a general lack of concern over the game being designed around motion controls. In spite of it supporting a standard controller, one method or the other will win out and confuses me as to the competitive element the game is premised upon. If it's not reliably competitive, then it's a tech demo more than it is a game.

How would this be a concern? If one method wins out, ideally it would be because it's a better more comfortable interface (kind of like how a pro scene for a fighting game is built around fight sticks), nothing about the game's competitive balance would be compromised just because one controller is more responsive than the others. And I'd rather have the option to ignore motion controls entirely, then be tied to them. It worked fantastic for Splatoon actually.

Besides even motion control wise, the only thing that is motion is apparently the tilting of the arms. The actual input for the punches is digital.

I was always thought it looked good, but in a goofy, shallow, but still fun sort of way like Power Stone. After seeing the direct, there looks to be a fair amount of strategy and depth. I'm excited for it.

Will it not be particularly deep? Probably. But as long as it's fun I don't care.

Wait, the marketing lied to me!?!?

Primarily trying to underscore how, as an example, Twilight Princess had motion controls that were shoehorned onto an existing game built with a controller in mind. I can't tell what the case is for ARMS i.e. which method the game is being built around, but I'm innately skeptical of anything tied to physical motion. But my point is not that I think it will have problems, but rather I haven't seen any voicing of that worry on these boards or elsewhere.

But my point is not that I think it will have problems, but rather I haven't seen any voicing of that worry on these boards or elsewhere.

Because there is nothing to actually worry about on that front. If the motion controls are clumsy, I can just use standard controls. If the motion controls are the better interface, why not just use the better interface. Between hands on, the twitch stream the other night from the invitational, and all the different control options got some serious hands on. From my understanding any idea of losing fidelity on inputs is a non-issue on both fronts. Although Edge n a few gaf cats argue there seems to be a more favorable reason to stick with the motion controls, those same people said the same shit about Splatoon. And I played that game on analog.

Twilight Princess, nothing about that game was particularly compromised. It was a needless addition, but hardly one that ruined the entire game (ala Lair, Star Fox Zero, Red Steel 1), etc.

No.

My interest was peaked months ago. The direct just reinforced the idea how Nintendo is offering a complete game with more to come down the line.

I'm never sold/not sold until I physically play a game. No amount of video can replace the experience of playing it for yourself. I'll try ARMS and see if I like it. :-)

Depends the genre. For example ive watched before lengthy gameplays thru streaming or youtube videos of games i was so-so about them and i could tell wasnt for me after an hour or so of watching . One of those was No mans Sky for example.

I was like " Boooring , this is not for me at all "

In heavy gameplay games though like Fighting games or FPS etc , you cant tell easily if its for you or not so you better try a demo or play it yourself.

Not in the slightest. I genuinely don't understand the appeal of the game... It genuinely looks like a free to play game. Not only that but has anyone seen people playing the game?... It looks like it lacks any form of precision with the controls and the game play is point in general direction of the other opponent and mash, who mashes quicker wins.

Loading Video...

This is a 6/10 game at best.

EDIT:... Also looks completely bland and the characters lack personality. This game should have been a pack in game with the console.

From the 3 hour event we got several impressions and people have been uniformly saying motion controls work very well, are snappy, and are better than the button controls. It even got people who swore off motion controls to like it.

You can mash, but just like with other fighting games you won't win against someone who knows what he's doing. Your ARMS overload if you just keep using them against a block. You can also equip heavier ARMS against mashers cause the heavier ARMS punch through the lighter ones so you can f them up if all they do is throw straight punches. And if they're mashing with heavy ARMS you can hopefully dodge quite easily? I haven't played it yet.

I'm reserving judgement till I get to play it but the hands-on impressions were very positive.

Not really.... seemed shallow, not a fan of the art style or characters....

This is going to be the Switchs' Knack ... nobody knows why it was made other than to bolster initial lineup ... trying to make something useful out of motion controls again...

not required, boring.

If this game was released for $60/£50 on the PS4 it would be torn a new a**hole.

@MBirdy88: So you feel Nintendo put one of their most technically talented teams in charge of a game to simply exist as a bullet point rather than trying to emulate the success of something like Splatoon which is clearly what they are going for?

Talents don't always translate to new I.Ps especially if its in another genre with a product purely made to push "motion controls" .. kinda frustrating too I might add since it needs to be played in that mode... so not really sponsoring the "Play anyway" (unless I'm wrong... not keeping up really). Then yea... I feel this is a product existing like 1-2 switch to push motion controls when the console doesn't need to.

The extra game modes really turned up my interest. So much so, I just uploaded a you tube video discussing why I think it even holds up against more serious fighters hehehe. Always fun to let that inner geek take over :)

honestly 0 interest from E3 last year ( dunno why I thought this was revealed at E3) the Directs.

Now I'm planning on Pre-ordering because of the Testfire. Video Footage did nothing for me, but actually playing the game did wonders.
