5-6 years ago to say playstation almost meant unstoppable... juggernaut... damn near invincible. Today I fear the PS name has gone the way of sony's other products in that its still of course a compatant and capable product but is in by no stretch "the" choice in the field...

I think of...

The Vaio- Take your pick of more popular PC

The Sony/Erricson phones- Droid, IPhone HTC etc...

The E-readers (do they have a name?) Kindle, Nook

Digital Cameras- Canon, Nikkon (though in sonys defense they used to make the best DC's on the market before they went plastic)

Playstation(?)- XBOX

Has sony been left in the dust again by yet another companies more appealing product? And is it Sonys marketing/business practices that dont allow sony to sustain dominance at anything...

ed. note. I still think their TV's are the best around, and own and love my 55'' bravia 1080p

PS3 had an awful first couple years, but it caught up. the vita was doomed to failure if that's your next point. sony were doing their best to make sure there were as many turnoffs as possible to the vita.

Im not a handheld gamer other than a few games on my android, but the vita looked tempting for a while, it does seem as though SOny is doing, well a sony... shooting itself before its even released.

2-3 million or so units more with a year head start does not equal the Xbox becoming THE brand. ;)

I don't think so. The PS3 brand, Blu-ray, Sony TV's and the Vaio are all goo products. BUT........If Microsoft gets another big jump on them and can get the XBOX720 out early again the Playstation brand might be in a world of trouble.

Generally speaking, the best brands are Sony, Samsung, amd Sharp for LED, Panasonic makes the best plasma models while Vizio and LG have some hit and miss products but also have some great ones.

Price price price... Look at sony TVs. More expensive than Samsung for approx the same quality, if not worse. Look at Sony PS3, $599 nuff said. Look at Sony PSV, $400+ just to get a game, memory card, and Vita (albeit, this is converted from yen but still, TOO EXPENSIVE) You get the point. :)

It's really no different than what Nintendo was back in the 80's-90's. Or Atari before them. Its just the regular cycle of gaming, the new guys will hit heavy, then sink down to the same level as everyone else. Microsoft will have it's turn, then the next newcomer (apple maybe?)

I'll add the Walkman to that list. It's quite possibly their biggest brand recognition loss. Sony ruled the portable music player world in the eighties with the walkman and then sat on their ass as the digital music evolution came along and they pretty much faded out of existence.

I do love my Bravia though.

They just didn't see it coming. And, trust me, back then, when mp3 players could barely hold 128 Megabytes of music, neither did most of us. I mean, Sony was already making discmans (or is it discmen?) that could read mp3 discs, which held seven times more data than most mp3 players available at the time. Suddenly, disk space pulled one of its logarithmic leaps and the fact that CD players could play your mp3 if you burned them on a CD became absolutely irrelevant, because you could store your entire mp3 catalogue on an mp3 player.

Yes, sticking with the CD format was a rather shortsighted move from Sony, but hindsight is always 20/20 too.

well here's the thing. When Diamond and Creative where taking a stab at it and it was a sure sign that the MP3 format was successful, they still did nothing. The Ipod's dominance didn't happen overnight.looking back it sure as hell seems like it though.

Making discmans/men that could read mp3s burned to a CD was doing something, and it made sense. However, it should have been a temporary thing, because once mp3 players started walking into the Gigabytes territory, portable CD players would become useless. Again, remember that those early mp3 players held ridiculously small amounts of data. The drive speace leap should have been foreseen by Sony, but maybe they just didn't see it happening that quickly.

I'm not arguing about what they did. It's that they didn't go far enough. As a result the Walkman died a pathetic death.

"maybe they just didn't see it happening that quickly"

That's entirely the problem, They should have. As a competitive brand in that space, they failled to innovate and paid for it. Maybe they thought the Playstation was enough. At one point it was. The same thing happened to them in that space as well. As advanced as the PS3 was, it wasn't very forward thinking. They totally overthought the tech and underthought the online.

I wouldn't say the xbox brand has taken the place of playstation at all, Sony should probably have dropped the handheld market and focused on home console from our point of view but then again look at how successful the psp has been in Japan. Microsoft have been doing as much bad to the xbox name as good in the last year with its push for the casual market.

Fanboys are one thing. To see some serious gamers wonder if Sony really is losing it's touch is quite a stretch. If this is somehow related to Vita I still say its too early to tell.

Look at what sonys name meant 20 years ago. Anythiing sony was like 2x more expensive than the other option. However, everything was top-notch quality. For instance, my cousins 21+ year old "beach-proof" cassette stereo is still going fine. They had some good products, and REAALLLY stood out back then. Sony now is just on a level playing field. The "Sony Store" of when i was a kid was a lot like the "apple store" of today. Sony does NOT have that effect anymore. Recent sony products bought: -Sony 12mp digital camera, and its a piece of ****. For the $250 I spent, I could've got a lot more. -Sony Vaio laptop: Within 2 days of getting my laptop, the keyboard keys started falling off. I had battery issues, harddrive issues from the get go, and the replacement I got fared no better. -Sony DVD player: bare bones simple DVD player. Glitches out and has screen issues. Disk drive will not close and must be forced closed sometimes. FF/RW speeds of only, 2x, 4x, 64x, 100x(annoying to find a scene in a movie with. - Sony PSP3000: Very happy with this purchase, had a LOT of fun with it with music/movies/game etc. Had some analog stick "sticking" issues, but they resolved themselves. all in all very good product. All I ever plan on buying that is sony is a PS3. So that does go to show you, at least sony still has playstation as a quality brand, that honestly I could not imagine it ever failing.

Is it hell its evolved more than anything, theres been a major shift to digital download services which can literally cut out the middle man in terms of how they sell their music also the way recording has evolved aswell that you can literally record in your house. Also on top of that many bands i know are unsigned or on indie labels like SOAR who have distro deals with the likes of Sony and thrives.

Also the live music scene is bigger than ever, actually im sure the past 2 years have seen a rise in live music event revenues aswell, on top of that merchandise and various other things factor into the industry aswell.

New music doesnt suck either unless you live in a timewarp or only looking at the top 40.On top of that i've spent the majority of the past 2 years going to gigs and know the ins and outs of one of the biggest and most influential music scenes in Europe and have ties to a couple fairly well known metal bands from Glasgow.

In my country, i don't think the brand name Playstation is going anywhere. Whenever i mention a console to my countrymen, it is the word "Playstation" that comes into their mind first, next Xbox, and Nintendo forgotten or labeled as "kiddy". My homeland is literally a Sony Land and i'm one of the few Nintendo fans. :(
