[QUOTE="meetroid8"]Playstation is a house hold name. Brand "power" comes from familiarity, not from product success. PS2_ROCKSFamiliarity is directly related to success. Regardless, the public is now familiar with the brand name. Even if it wasn't as successful, it is still just as recognizable.
i dont think the playstation 3 brand holds the same weight that the PS2 brand did. ps2 dominated last gen. sony definitely took a step back this genmems_1224I think that fact is lost on them because they still act as though they are dominating. The marketing and commercials are still abstract, and hokey pokey and relying on the name Playstation at to just be enough of a selling point doesn't fly anymore.
Who lost the power of it's brand name?
/posting in a troll flame bait thread
If anything, the PlayStation name is stronger than ever. A big part of a brand name has to do with the amount of time it has been around. Everyone who knew about the Playstation name during the PS1 and PS2 era still know about it, and plenty of people have most likely learned about it this generation with the PS3.
I think when people see the PlayStation name, they associate that with quality. They have well made systems, and good games. It's also a brand name that is liked globally, whereas other brand names like Xbox struggle in the east, and have yet to really be trusted globally.

[QUOTE="ShadowsDemon"][QUOTE="TH1Sx1SxSPARTA"] what are you talking about, kinect has only strengthened the xbox brand nameAdmiralBisonYeah, and those games just proof your point -.- Exactly. The brand name "Xbox" is on more peoples minds then ever. Appeals to core gamers and also casual gamers. Core games still continue to come in and the install base continues to grow. No problem. I seriously doubt that any hardcore gamer will want to play those. The sort of gamers on the 360 aren't the sort to give a crap about the riff-raff of these games.

= 9.0 NOT Nominated for GOTY.. Where's JTrenton when you need him..
BTW, you're posting GOTY nominations??!?!!!!!
That was the 360's only great game of 2011, and it only got "nominated"??!?!!!!!
The ps3 have 2 exclusives that have not only got nominated, but actually won GOTY awards, and to top it all off, both of those years that a ps3 exclusives received GOTY awards, the ps3 library looked great that year, heck, DS won the GOTY in 09, but UC2 had a higher score. So don't throw you're "GOTY nominees" against the ps3 crowd because we laugh at those.

I think there was a lot of self-inflicted damage surrounding the Kinect.
Primarily what I mean by that is, they shouldn't have advertised it as, "you are the controller". I think they shot themselves in the foot with that statement alone. That one simple statement limited an endless amount of possibilites to basically a dance game peripheral capable of doing some on-rail segments.
If they had just cut that statement out, and allowed for things like a navigation controller at the very least, a lot more possibilities would be available.
As it stands right now, developers are struggling to even find a way to implement it into core games. It's not like the Move where you can easily incorporate it into many core games that aren't entirely based on motion controls.
The Kinect is sort of in a position where it has alienated itself from everything. It is so limited that you can't have a first person shooter and implement Kinect controls into it like you can with the Move. Everything that deals with the Kinect needs to be built from the ground up for Kinect, and be Kinect exclusive.
18 million sold is quite impressive for the amount of time that it has been on the market, but we have yet to see a steady stream of software for it. In all honestly, the vast majority of software for it is shovelware. I think Kinect could have greatly benefited from a navigation controller, and a design that didn't alienate it from core games. If you could use Kinect for core games like you can use the Move for core games, I think it wouldn't be looked at as the joke that people see it as now, a device with a bunch of shovelware to play, the highest rated game being a dance game.
the ps3 has a slow start but most of my friends surprizingly own a ps3 now (as well as an xbox). Generally buying games for each system in which whatever more friends has for that system. Hasnt the ps3 caught MS in sales despite the earlier launch date of xbox 360? Im not 100% positive but i dont think both systems are a failure. Yes, the ps2>ps3. Everyone and their grandma's had ps2's...it was the system. But I remember during highschool everyone having psp's too (yeah, they have ds's as well..and yes DS's are WAYYY more popular). But still, the Playstation portable competeted WELL with nintendo. I mean the psp sold over 70 million..thats a prize. So I do think sony went downhill a little after ps2..as expected since truimphing the ps2 is difficult. Also sony had a slow start with format battles, late launch and price (granted these were tactical mistakes that could have been avoided)..I think sony is doing fine. I think this generations handheld battle with make or break sonys decision to make a psp3 or vita2 or whatever itll be called
EDIT: PS3 sales are 62 million while 260 is 65.8 and psp sales are 71.3 millon... Playstation brand is bring in more revenue compared to MS..and Nintendo is killing them all..Still. Compared to ps2's 154.4 million sold these numbers are medicore..still it shows Playstation brand is still Relevant and strong..just not a monpoly.
Its comparable to Windows OS..A few years back, MAC OS was never really spoken of..just in trendy cooperate offices and schools, Yet now mac's are prestige products and go on any college campus and you will see more macs and ipads over PC's..granted PC numbers are higher do to cooperate reasons..but i wonder if that will change..Point being is in this analogy, Windows in early 2000's and 90's were a monopoly product..everyone has it..Today, you see diversity. And thats what the PS brand it facing..more diversity in the market. Its all relevant and good though standing from an economic (both formal and informal sense of the meaning) standpoint :)

What you're saying is true, but I still believe that both the Move and Kniect are gimmicks and a waste of time. I have 20 Wii games, and only a couple of them even require motion controls to play. The rest use traditional controls, Gamecube controls, Classic controller etc.
I am just not really into the whole motion control thing just yet myself.
dont know if i posted here or not lol
but all and all yea the ps3 era did some damage to playstation, not completely irreversible since im starting to see buddies get a ps3 as well.
But PS is not the front runner right now. Well see what happens next gen.

Neither am I, which is why I don't see the point...Of course, both Sony and PlayStation brands mean practically nothing these days. All their products have to sell on their own strenghts and marketing effort these days.
playstation didnt lose sht. people still flock instores for anything playstation and buy by the boatloads and like cakes that are hot im just sayin

Yeah, that's exactly why the PS3 isn't in last place and why the Vita didn't flop in Japan. Oh wait....
Many industry analyst feel so as well as many tech heads. What are your opinions on this matter. Does the Playstation brand still holds any strength in its name or has it soften and died a little these past few years. What about Sony and their name? I read an article detailing that Sony may want to get rid of the playstation name. What say you.

Has lost all appeal it had
Mainly because lost all the games that made it special like JRPGs and became a shooter console with a flood of games trying to rival Halo with zero success
It is so bad, that i dont plan to get a PS4 at all next gen, unless a miracle happens and they stop making shooters and start making some RPGs instead
How many companies can release a 600 dollars console and get it sold in the 50 millions yea.......the sony name is stronger then its ever been....OWNED leave now

Logic fail.
You make it sound as if the PS3 never had a price drop. And even with a big price drop last year and a variety of exclusives, the PS3 still got outsold by the console that "has no exclusives".

Well, a price drop from 600$ to 250$ helped a lot
How many console had to cut back the price 350$ !!!!!!!!!!!!! ???????????
Definatly not 360, that has not got a price drop since its launch, it was 400$ back then and is still 400$

He's a fakeboy. Ignore him. That's obvious now :PWell kinda, see I bought the PS3 expecting a ton of JRPG's just like the PS1 and the PS2 and I was let down severly by this alone. Playstation was known for RPGs, but the PS3 is known for having hardly any at all.

well coming from a big lem thats no shock.
Around the time of the hacks last year? Probably.
But now a days, I don't think the name has weakend. Sure, the Wii may be on top right now in terms of sales, but it's not like a Playstation is going to dwindle in importance anytime soon as a name.
Besides, third consoles might be influenced by a curse, hopefully Sony can get it together next generation, because I sure am excited for it.

1st: Learn how to put a complete sentence together that makes sense.
2nd: Look at the sales charts. Obviously the playstation brand is doing just fine.
/thread.
Obviously alot of 360 owners say ps2 was great but ps3 is bad which is not true as ps3 is good but not as good as xbox as xbox has cross game chat and really relevant exclusives that made people buy the 360 and most people only want one console. But ps3 at its high price tag made people think ps2 was good so ps3 should be but at the price Ill get an xbox 360 instead and the exclusives are not relevant.
Sony did a lot to destroy the PS brand name this generation. People still know it, but it's not what it was last gen when the PS name dominated.
Let's put this in persepective, it's a fair question.
Sony as a "brand" is not what they used to be, that is a fact based on their market share in several of their different electronic brands, and that includes the PS3...which is not what the PS1/PS2 was.
Cows like to throw the Kinect thing at lemmings, but if Sony was successful with Move...you honestly think it would be any different? Move was a failed experiement. I've said it before, Kinect is a launching pad on the 360 for MS, much like Blu-ray for Sony on the PS3 was. Kinect is going to be a rock bed going forward(in many industries) if the potential of the technology reaches it's pinnicle.
I also find it funny that cows throw up Kinect game images like its the only games on the 360? Again I ask you, nobody is forced to buy it. Yes many people have Kinect, but the technology is verstile. Go look at the NPD 2011 games sold overall on the 360, and tell me how many Kinect games are on it. Other then Adventure and Sports (bundles), it's all 3rd party (IE: The CODs, Mass effects, etc) and 1st party (your Halos, Gears, Forza, fables etc).
Your arguement is false, and makes you look petty. This is not to discredit that the ps3 doesn't have good games, because it does. The original question however is just in that the PS3 doesn't have the impact power the previous two systems had.
Less competition is never a good thing for any industry, so we'll see how Sony handles themselves the next few years.

but sony still payed attention to it's core market and released "steady" exclusives for the ps3, unlike m$ which started out that way, but when kinect caught on to the casuals, m$ totally kicked the core market to the curb. What a way to turn your back on your audiences, huh??!?!!
* Yes the PS3 released a steady stream of exclusives that didn't sell as well as 3rd party offerings. Just look at the top ten selling titles for 2011 (source NPD) 8 out of ten were on the XB 360 and NONE of them were Kinect titles..
BTW, you're posting GOTY nominations??!?!!!!!
That was the 360's only great game of 2011, and it only got "nominated"??!?!!!!!
* So I guess Forza (that won Racing GOTY), and Halo A "doesn't count".. :|

Sony and Playstation are household names around the world and are held in higher esteem than MS or Xbox. Playstation brand is older and is well known around the world, Xbox is only well known in North America.
Yes because Europe where the xbox is doing quite well doesn't exist. Come on now... again read my post two up. Facts are facts. There is no disputing Playstation is a house hold name, but it lacks the firepower the previous generations had, where as the Xbox brand has grown substantially this generation.Sony and Playstation are household names around the world and are held in higher esteem than MS or Xbox. Playstation brand is older and is well known around the world, Xbox is only well known in North America.
