This gen: Super Mario Galaxy, Portal
How can something be a timeless classic when its time isn't even over yet? Doesn't a game have to stand the test of time to be a "timeless classic?"
I'd say only after 10 years is it possible to determine if something is, or will be "timeless." That said, I believe both Odin Sphere and Prince of Persia [2008] will stand the test of time.
Right off the top of my head,Halo 3 ODST, BF:BC ( and probably the second but i have yet to buy it), COD MW2, Super Mario Galaxy, and most of the pokemon series.
Portal and HL2: Ep2. every other game is going to be forgotten in time. They may be fun and excellent games right now, but in 15 years you won't be picking them up and playing them for their quality. I think only the innovativeness of Portal and the epic story of HL2: Ep2 are going to hold up.
uhm, it depends entierly on how the game mechanics are in the future. A masterful game like MGS4 does not equal timless sorry. SMB3 is timeless because the physics in that game resembles the ones in todays games, whereas SMB is out-dated in that sense.
Portal is one game that would fit this category.
I only finished Ep2 a few weeks ago and I've completely forgotten the story and plot already. All I remember was the ending and how surprised I was, because I was expecting at least another couple hours.Portal and HL2: Ep2. every other game is going to be forgotten in time. Gears of war halo 3rickatickHalo 3? Please. The Campaign was dated and awful when it came out, and the MP will be gone when MS pulls the plug.

Oh wow UR RIGHT hahaha. never realized that at all. good find.
i know the last guardian will be one. As far as games already released then i'll also go with portal and the overlooked mirror's edge personally.
TF2, mario galaxy, uncharted, COD4, gears of war, demon souls, mass effect, blazblue and many more.Androvinusyeah I could see demon's souls becoming a classic or a unique retro game in the future.
So far this generation - Heavy Rain. Absolute masterpiece.
I would keep my eyes on The Last Guardian. ;)
I would say so. MGS4,COD4, Uncharted 2, Assassins Creed 2, Gears series, and from the reviews of God of War 3, it's looking to be one also. There is a very big list of great titles across all 3 platforms this gen.
I'd say MGS4 sits alone there.
Chutebox
MGS4 isnt even the best in the series. Anyway, i'd say its Bayonetta.

Dead Rising - been playing it since it came out. It's a ****ing incredible game, just absolutely brilliant and highly replayable. To write it off as just a bunch of mindless zombie killing (though yes, there is plenty of that) would a great disservice to one of the most original and ingenious games I've ever played.
If we were being honest, it's certainly the best work Capcom has done since RE4, if not REmake, and an easy contender for best game of this generation to date.
It will last.
BioShock - has garnered a great deal of hatred since 2007. Understandable, that. For starters, it isn't really a traditional FPS, and it doesn't tickle most of the usual FPS gamer's buttons in the way that most popular FPS game are expected to. On the other hand, it isn't nearly as cerebral or challenging an experience as System Shock 2 is, which means that many fans of SS2 (of whom there seemed to be an unreasonably large number all of the sudden, post-release) were, again understandably, disappointed.
I don't care about any of that. The game is amazing. There is nothing else like it, period. That one of the most orginal games in years was criticised by angry reactionaries as "derivative" is hilarious to me; nothing could be further from the truth.
It's a feverish and psychotic black comedy set in a failed Randian paradise on the ocean's floor. Go on, explain to me how this game is not an entirely singular piece of work; I will happily take this one to the mat, again, and again.
It is fiercely original, hysterically violent, impeccably presented, and, yes, entirely insane. If you don't like it, well, I'm sorry. Chances are, it doesn't like you either. We get along just fine without you.
It will last.
Honorable Mentions -
These are the games that I need to play at least a few times more each before bestowing the honor of "timeless c1assic" upon them. I don't take that sort of praise lightly; for the record, I have completed BioShock at least 6 or 7 times, and Dead Rising many times more, not to mention all the time I've spent playing infinite mode or just ****ing around.
Anyway:
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Braid
I say.....Metroid Prime Trilogy because I never played the original Prime games.
Although, if I include MPT I might have to include: The Orange Box & God of War Collection
i'm gonna guess:
um... i'm sure i could think of more
basically, games that are memorable and well crafted and would still be great even if later on a sequel was better or something similar came out
TF2. Timeless gameplay, graphics, everything about this game. You may call me a fanboy if you want 8)
I agree with Dead Rising, even though I didn't even get near finishing it. It was a totally unique concept in some aspects, and the demo is still ridiculously fun (redownloaded it). It's challenging, very challenging I thought too, which is a positive for some people too.Dead Rising - been playing it since it came out. When it comes to what will become a classic: History and many peoples opinions trump one person's opinion. Of course Halo is the most hated game in System Wars, but Halo has lovers too and my point still stands.
