Let me just qualify this by saying I'm a HUGE Uncharted fan, check my user reviews for Drake's Fortune and Among Thieves (9.0 and 10.0, respectively). Uncharted 2 was an amazing experience front to back and I consider it one of my favorite games of all time. From start to finish the single player story was great and the multiplayer was great fun with friends and could get decently competitive (prior to patch 1.05).

Fast forward to present day. After beating Uncharted 3 I can confidently say that it's a great game. It feels like it falls short of Uncharted 2 for me. Perhaps it was hype, or perhaps it was the fact that I never felt like the addition of MP in UC2 affected the single player. In UC3...I definitely feel it.

So one's a linear action-adventure game and the other's an open world game. Why even compare the two? Well, here's why:

  • Both third-person shooters. In this category, Saints Row excels. Both by having more awesome weapons and a wider assortment (yes, I know some of the weapons in SR are goofy) and by having a much more response and accurate aiming system (though I do wish there was an option to disable aim-assist) without having to resort to a lock-on system like Red Dead's "Normal" aiming mode. I don't how or why Naughty Dog would break something that wasn't broken, but the sensitivity settings (or lack thereof) and aiming in UC3 feels like such a chore to use. I feel like they copied these aiming mechanics from GTAIV. They're laggy and unresponsive, even on the highest sensitivity. Naughty Dog says that they're working on a patch for that, which is odd considering the aiming for MP is tighter and more response. I hope this doesn't mean ND is starting to regard UC single player the way fans of Call Of Duty view its campaigns.
  • Both feature huge, cinematic moments. Uncharted's might be more glamorous, Hollywood-like moments, but Saints Row still manages to best them, the whole while being completely playable. I know UC gives you control during the best parts, but in the plane sequence in UC3 you almost fall out of a plane and have to fight your way back on before it inevitably ends up crashing. In Saints Row: The Third, you fight your way off a plane, skydive through debris to save a gang member who's free falling, and you mid-air shootouts like in the movie Shoot 'Em Up. You then dive back into the plane, killing more of the remaining crew on your way out the back.
  • Customization! Now I know that Uncharted is all about the controlled, scripted aspect of the single player game, but this time they included character customization in the MP. That's great and it's a welcome addition, however I feel that compared to the quality that Naughty Dog normally puts out, it's a half-hearted effort. No hair or facial hair choices. No different facial features. Limited clothes / color choices. No sliders for anything. Hell, PlayStation Home has more customization options. Then again, this IS ND's first attempt at this where Volition has had experience.
  • Upgrades. Along with all the character, vehicle, and gang customization there's weapon customization. Being able to upgrade your weapon's proficiency throughout the course of the game lets you feel like you're making progress and that your weapon's abilities are also scaling with your skill at the game. It's part of the reason I loved Resistance 3's campaign. They're in the MP portion of the game now. All that would had to be done is adding them in a meaningful way to the SP.
  • Surprising story. Saints Row may be over the top and ridiculous, but the story still manages to be cohesive, funny, and it makes sense. The added fun of seeing and hearing YOUR character in those cutscenes greatly adds to that. Uncharted is starting to become a little TOO formulaic. UC1 and UC2 basically followed the same story arc...with a few twists. I feel like, in a way, ND kinda phoned it in for UC3. It's not a bad game by any means, but other than some graphical upgrades it feels like a step backwards...especially considering things like unlockable cheats that were in the first and second game AREN'T in the third (Seriously, who does that?). As for my use of "surprising" describing either story, I'll put it to you this way: One of the games had the guts to kill a main character in the first 15 minutes.

TL;DR: While not as polished, Saints Row: The Third manages to be better than Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception through customization options, more responsive aiming, crazier cinematic moments, weapon upgrades, more freedom, and a story that keeps you guessing while being entertaining the whole time.

Nice review. Though I don't agree, I can safely say that Saints Row:TT is a great addition and I can't wait to get it.

Saints row 3 has a bad story. A very bad story. Its a great game and I'm glad they made it, but its hardly comparable to UC3. I havent played uncharted 3 yet, but SR3 cant even compare to UC2. The shooting mechanics arent that great, especially with its lack of a cover system. Either way, it makes no sense to compare the two, just because they have guns and an over the shoulder camera. They are entirely different games which aim to excel at different things

Jebus213

Well, that's fun too. ;)

Again, I know they're not the same type of game and some of my points don't necessarily apply as a result of those differences. However, in terms of the areas where they CAN be compared, I feel Saints Row is better. Namely in controls, cinematic moments, and the story being less predictable. I'm not criticizing Uncharted for not being a better open world game because it's not supposed to be. Honestly, my favorite games are ones like BioShock and Batman: Arkham Asylum: Games that are overly linear but have room to explore and collectibles like audio logs that expand on the narrative.

You should try Saints Row 3 on PC TC. No auto aim and it's very responsive especially with the mouse!

I was sort of laughing at GS for giving SR3 such a high score at first. The more I play it though, the better it got. The series still hasn't reached GTA4's level of physics and quality of overworld. However, the devs found creative ways to streamline the GTA formula and hide its faults. I am pleasantly surprised and I say about mid way through it is an improvement from SR2

? I'm sorry but to me that means its better. UC3 is the prettier game. Funny, I would say they are comparable because they are casual titles that don't require strategy. I would say that if you want your jaw to drop when you start the game get Uncharted. If you want to have fun get Saint's Row

I love the Uncharted series. It's easily one of my favorite new IPs this gen, but I have to admit at this point that the stories are good because of the acting, storytelling, and the pacing. The story for each game at this point has been a carbon copy of the previous game with location changes and different treasures. If you think I'm lying about being a fan, check. I have the Platiinum for the first two games and I'm working on UC3 now.

I think it's fair to compare aspects that are similar without comparing the whole game. It's possible to listen to two different types of music and determine one to be more skilled than the other. You could compare the creation tools in LittleBigPlanet to those in ModNation Racers even though ones a platformer and one's a kart racing game. If would be fair to say "ModNation Racers is like if you combined LittleBigPlanet with Mario Kart."

So in that sense, I'm comparing them by their similar traits. Uncharted 3 has better, more dynamic melee combat in terms of realism and having a striking/countering system. Granted, Batman: Arkham City's is better, but that game's central focus is melee combat. These two games are primarily shooters. I'm comparing them on that note.

I must be living in some bizzaro world because I really, really hate the stories in the Uncharted games. It's more than that actually. I hate the story, characters, dialogue and the designs. The combat is fun though and the games look fantastic. But the cinematic sequences, God, if those games were movies instead, they would be called really cheesy Indiana Jones rip offs only with the blandest protagonist in Hollywood history

Sorry, I may have worded that funny.

It ISN'T as bad as RDR on Normal aim mode (I used the Expert targetting system from start to finish anyway), meaning it doesn't snap to targets. Generally speaking I feel like I have full control and my sensitivity is maxed. However, there are spots where I definitely notice sticky aim. I don't need help following moving / strafing targets. And I checked, other than sensitivity I didn't see any options to turn it off. It only kicks in occasionally, but it's definitely there. I only noticed it using close to mid-range weapons though. There's nothing like that while sniping or using the reaper drone or anything.

I'm already thinking about double-dipping SR3, Dragonfire. I need to build a gaming rig first. I have a wishlist with all the parts on Newegg, I just have to save up for it. My current comp can only play a few Source engine games on medium/low settings without Vsync at around 30 fps (sometimes dipping into the 20s/teens). My front end's good as far as monitor, mouse, keyboard, and speakers go, but I need a whole new tower from the bottom up. What I am able to play on PC though I've enjoyed more than consoles (L4D, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Quakelive) in terms of responsiveness.

i eat, sleep and breath the assault rifle and headshots and have never noticed sticky aim. i really don't think it has it.

lol, i would think i would get way more headshots than i do if it had it since you just have to get the elevation right, i drag the reticule off target all the time while i'm strafing around.

i also use the strafe to fine tune my aim sometimes and it never snaps to it or clings if i move around,

I'm pretty Sure Saint Row: The Third is more fun than Uncharted (if you're into that type of game ), whether is better or not depends on each person, some people hate Saint Row simply because they copied GTA but they took a completely different turn that I believe it deserves it's own reputation for.

And about the story I haven't played uncharted yet ( I deff will when I catch up ) I doubt staint's story being better however Saint Row's story isn't horrible, is actually quite interesting even if it isn't realistic it's engaging and curious. You play it wondering what will happen next and while you're at it enjoying the fun missions. I call that good story telling i'm interested in how it'll turn out.

BTW Jonny rules.

I don't even think this place hates UC3 as much as they claim, I think people are just very against cows here.

Two very different kinds of games there. You might as well compare Halo to Uncharted 3, as different as they are.

And that's enough to draw a conclusion on the game as a whole? Jumping to conclusions much?

Saints Row The Third is the best around. Some seriously amazing moments in that game. Lovin is what I got for THQ for allowing Volition to go all out on that stuff.

It's kinda hard to compare these games, therefore I won't comment. Also, I haven't played neither of them yet. I will be picking up Saints Row on black Friday however.

What I am able to play on PC though I've enjoyed more than consoles (L4D, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Quakelive) in terms of responsiveness.

navyguy21

i eat, sleep and breath the assault rifle and headshots and have never noticed sticky aim. i really don't think it has it.

lol, i would think i would get way more headshots than i do if it had it since you just have to get the elevation right, i drag the reticule off target all the time while i'm strafing around.

It doesnt, not even in the console versions. Not sure what game he is playing, but it isnt SR3.

Nope, it's definitely SR3. ;)

Like I said, it's not when sniping or using any of the weapons like the reaper drone or air strike laser. I've put almost 20 hours into the game and I've only noticed 2 or 3 occasions where I could feel sticky aim, so it's rare. Each time I would be aiming at someone and they'd start running to the side. The reticle pulled and followed them for a few feet. This was only when aiming in precision mode though with either an assault rifle, SMG, or handguns and it only happened a few times. Seems like it was also only on NPCs. I never noticed any aim assist when shooting down choppers or VTOLs.

It's not anywhere near Call Of Duty levels, but there's some there. To give another recent game as an example, the couple times I felt it reminded me of inFamous 2. The fact that I only noticed it a few random times made me wonder why it was in there at all since the aiming in both games is fine for a console game.

These threads against Uncharted 3 are getting more and more ridiculous...

Uncharted 3 is a third person adventure game

Saints Row The Third is an open world sandbox game

Having played both I'll say that you're completely wrong...Infamous 2 >>> Saints Row The Third, problem?

While not as polished, Saints Row: The Third is only 8.5 and not AAA 9.0 Editors Choice that Uncharted currently holds here, thus UC3>SR3. We wont bring MC into the discussion as to not embarrass you even further.

I liked saints row 2 more than uncharted 2 so this doesn't come as a shock to me.
