So have JRPG in general made any significant progression for this gen compared to the last or simply there mostly still stuck in the past with their game design. Hard to tell how much they will bring to the table but I guess we will see when the bigger ones get release.

Them being JRPGs in the first place means they must be all about being stuck in the past and regurgitate as many cliched tropes as it's humanly possible.

Exactly like VOCAL TRANCE songs MUST ADHERE TO THE SAME COOKIE CUTTER FORMULA or else they will stop belonging to the genre. And I guess they both fear rejection.

Japanese games aren't much about constant evolution or always showing something new to attract users... like it is in the western part of the industry.

Western ideals shouldn't be forced onto JRPG's. This is what I think.

Also a good example is Dark Souls and Demon Souls. If you look at all the Souls games including Bloodborne you'll realize that the formula is pretty much consistent. Instead of always wanting something new.....don't you think it's okay to just keep a formula and just constantly use it to make more hybrid-like versions of the initial game ? It sounds unappealing but this isn't the same case as it was with COD etc.. The Souls games actually have value and lots of content.... Just the fact that each game plays off in a slightly different time-period/setting already makes it worthwhile.

Final Fantasy 13 did some things differently and garnered... lets say strong reactions. I think the industry took note and reacted accordingly.

Well does JRPGs even have a decent combat system outside of Souls and Bloodborne? I don't think so.

The fact they're making a comeback and that there are more quality JRPGs on the market every year shows that they're not stuck in the past. They're still playing catch up, to some extent, but I don't think it can be called a dying genre anymore. It's very much relevant.

Modern RPGs in general, including JRPGs and WRPGs, have changed. Modern JRPGs have little in common with classic JRPGs, while modern WRPGs have little in common with classic WRPGs.

Also, the distinction between JRPGs and WRPGs has blurred. In terms of gameplay, there isn't much to differentiate modern Japanese RPGs like FFXV, Souls/Bloodborne, Monster Hunter, and Xenoblade, from modern Western RPGs like Witcher, Fallout 4, Skyrim and Dragon Age. There is no real JRPG-WRPG schism anymore, unless we're talking about throwback titles like Bravely Default or Pillars of Eternity.

As a general rule of thumb, modern JRPGs tend to have better combat systems than modern WRPGs.

Maybe so, but that's not even a good measuring stick as so many modern WRPGs play like dog shit lol.

jRPGs have advanced quite a bit.

And unlike western RPGs, they did that without abandoning their strengths and alienating old fans >_>

Pretty sure ATB games flow in real time.

That is kinda what seperates them from Turn Based games.

Yup, turn based in 2016 by any major AAA studio is lazy and just for reference to see how eay turn based is to program compare to realtime look at Azure Revolution and how stupid is AI now that they are somewhat trying to switch to realtime.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is as modern as it gets. Plus it has amazing combat, which is rare in most JRPGs. Also a bunch of JRPGs just copy and rehash each other. It gets boring, thankfully we have other games to play though, like Xenoblade and Fire Emblem.

Why would I call Chess lazy, it's a table top game not a video game simulating a realtime fighting between one or more people.

Japanese games are always inferior when it comes to realism. Their style is more of the fantastical, crazy, and bizarre nature. You only need to look at the difference of MGS and Splinter Cell.

@zeeshanhaider: Chess is played on and is suposse to be simulating a kings army against another kings army. Its a battle feild you just lack the imagination to get any engagment or satifaction out of the turn based style. Call the entire mlb lazy to for not having opposite pitchers and batter on the field at the same time. To not like it is understandable. But to say its lazy and lacks action ignorent.

Its actually easier to make a cheap hack and slash game. Than a cheap turned based one

Not sure what you have played, but they are not the same as the old.

I was going to say that as well.

Ni no kuni had good combat and I might be in the minority in this but I absolutely love the final fantasy 13, especially lightning returns', combat systems.

I can still easily identify WRPGs, there is no blurring there. Even with your odd selection of games (Monster Hunter and Bloodborne are action games.), there is a clear distinction between the open-ended player driven experience offered in WRPGs vs the much more linear character driven experience of JRPGs.

@zeeshanhaider: Lol dude. If you're going to make random shit up, at least back it up with more random made up shit. If it's not made up and I've actually forgotten, link me to whenever or wherever it was that I said that (or said something else entirely that you probably interpreted wrongly).

Okay, I looked it up and it wasn't you. It was LordCrash88. I'm sorry for the confusion.

Japanese games are always inferior when it comes to realism. Their style is more of the fantastical, crazy, and bizarre nature. You only need to look at the difference of MGS and Splinter Cell.

Glad we agree that they suck compare to the rest of the world's offerings. lol JRPGs

You mean one of the most anticipated games of 2016?

You can put it however you want but doesn't change the fact that how cheap and crappy this weaboo shit looks and most definitely plays. Oh and did I mention the PS2 graphics?

Where's the punchline?

The very existence of JRPGs in today's gaming in the punchline. lol JRPGs.

Yeah, but Chess is a table top game not a video game. Thank you. You can't simulate battle between two armies in realtime on a table top game, it's the limitation of the medium unless you really want the war to happen in real life, and at that point it won't be a game. Thank you.

Oh, and Chess is not a video game. The version of Chess you play on your PC is simulating the game of Chess (the table top game) not the realtime fighting between two or more people. Keep grasping.
