Have Reviewers Sacked Ryse and the Fun in Gaming

I also frequent gaming forums like IGN, GameSpot and NeoGAF. Do you know that GameSpot has a subforum named System Wars? It's even the most frequented one there. One would think this has to be a very successful game, System Wars sounds very similar to Star Wars, so could be a space game. But when you enter that forum you notice very fast that other systems are at war there. There fight modern gaming crusaders under the banner of gaming systems. PlayStation is killing the Xbox, and Xbox is slaughtering the PC. Nintendo they don't even take seriously anymore.

IGN is not much different and NeoGAF is more the place of the backstabby passive-aggressive diplomat type that hopes to lure the enemy over to his side with a well informed opinion.

What are the weapons of these modern crusaders, the system warriors. Metascores, game previews and technical analysis a la Digital Foundry. And of course a lot of name calling, which former Microsoft man Adam Orth can say a word or two about. The words toxicity and troll are often associated with these system war arenas. The word fun is not often used there, could it be that you can't fight with something that you don't have?

Let me now come to the professional game reviewers, and I call most of them that way because they are paid for that. Do they turn which way the wind blows? Bam, I started with the hammer.

Just so it happened that, regardless of bad Metascore, some Xbox One gamers picked up Ryse, and surprise surprise, it was fun. Mind you, many first simply didn't dare to write fun, but used adjectives like guilty pleasure and mindless fun to not get flamed. Some admitted completing the game multiple times in contrast to some games that got glowing reviews. On the higher difficulties the game also required strategy to survive. And surprise, the combat system was more realistic than other so called hack and slash games a la God of War, and even the Dark Souls combat looks somewhat crude in execution when you compare it.

Luckily many more gamers dared not to listen to reviews and discovered that Ryse is a lot of fun. Simply poking at the Amazon game reviews you see that people have a lot of fun with the game and the game is very popular among the gamers who bought it at the Xbox One digital store. Some gamers ask themselves what were the reviewers smoking when they played Ryse, or if they even played it at all.

Should professional game critics ask themselves if they have fun gaming? Should you play video games because well it's a habit, who needs fun? Everyone has to answer these questions for himself. I know that if I want the mystery of new games to return I should stop looking for reviews, previews, yes even stop peeking at the final scores. And fun is not what I'll find in gaming forums, well sometimes it can be fun, but for the wrong reasons.

sure, if only I was rich and don't mind wasting money and buying every game that comes out then I wouldnt even bother checking out reviews to get a general idea of how the games plays

I agree, Knack was also a 10/10 GOAT. I am sure lemmings will agree.

Ryse was shit but hardcore lems are still in denial the biggest launch game was terrible.

Ryse is a very good, underrated game. It flopped here and in most reviews, lol. But I really enjoyed it. And the multiplayer was very underrated as well. Reviews are like assholes, everybody got one. Just judge a game based on your opinion of it. Watch videos, read previews, maybe read a couple of reviews just to get a sense of if the game is broken technically or the controls suck, ect. But overall be your own judge. I would have missed out on a ton of games I truly enjoyed if all I went by were reviews on gaming websites.

As always, anyone can form a personal opinion of any a game after they have played it.

Just ask SW Duper Cow Heil about the fun and just gotta keep playing addictiveness of Ryse, g'head, ask him and if being honest ( yeah right) he will tell you it's at least a 8.0 game. :o :P

The article makes sense and i do agree with the main point with some games but Ryse is an awful example. That game was plainly poor.

Ryse is a crappy QTE fest. If you don't play many games you could probably have fun with it, same way a generic 6/10 FPS could be good fun for someone who never played Halo, COD, Battlefield, Bioshock, etc.

Played it at an MS event before the ONE launched. It was dreadful, nothing but endless "epic" slow motion and QTEs, and when there weren't QTEs there was just button bashing. Why would I own it?

Sure you did. (insert eye roll here) I am convinced that you played it for quite some time, because your depiction of game play is... completely wrong. Looks to me like you just read some negative reviews, and are basing your opinion off of that.

There are legitimate gripes for Ryse, just not the ones you mentioned. If you haven't played a game before, don't post crap like you have.

Agreed. I have gripes about it. For one, if you are going to have human looking enemies, they all shouldn't be clones of each other. And, the story was a little dumb.

But, I don't think it deserves a 4/10. I can think of a lot of games that scored higher than that and are far worse.

I repeat, I played it, at an MS event, with a bunch of smily reps trying to convince us that it was a good game. It was garbage, and everyone was really uncomfortable as the MS reps kept trying to pretend that QTE after QTE = a good game. There was nothing else TO the gameplay, just the poor combat.

The gameplay was in fact nothing but button bashing and QTEs, if you enjoy that, fine. But the rest of us think it's crap.

This is my thoughts. (regarding reviews not Ryse) ... most of the GOTYs here and many other places to me have been some of the more shallow graphic whoring games. (except maybe mario galaxy) .... so many games better than "the top 10" on metacritic... as much as I loved Ocarina of Time....

loads of low scoring gems that I find better than the 9s.

I played it at an expo. Had to line up for 45 minutes to do so because MS can't organise for shit (PlayStation allowed you to line up for the bits you wanted rather than the whole thing in one go). Derivative gameplay and linear as all hell, plus the constant slow mo got on my nerves after a while.

;) All in good jest. I played Knack at the same expo and I rather enjoyed it, despite the judder in the city and similar linearity. It had actual gameplay too.

All I'll say is, if people can say the GodoW games had shallow gameplay, Ryse was a mere droplet on a desert. I was hoping it to be MS's answer to the GodoW franchise with a beast of a Roman version of it but it fell extremely short. Was very disapoint seeing it was the only Xbone launch game I was interested in. Instead it's basically like a playable 300 movie.

That's not at all an accurate description of the game play. So, I think you are not being truthful.

I love Ryse. The story, the graphics, and the gameplay is epic. If I played the game on easy like the reviewer likely did, I might have been bored. But im not a pansy and my sword stays thirsty.

people hate , the game was beautiful and voice acting was good. Its gameplay is what people hate but I enjoyed it. That said I got it for 40$ lol and got 30 hours out of it

I think a 4 for Ryse was too low. I would give it a 6. Its entertaining, but repetitive.

@tormentos: First off, I am not a lemming. I have said positive and negative things about the XBox One, and positive and negative things about the PS4. What I don't do, is spout FUD like you do.

Also, I don't act like I have played games when I have not. I have made fun of cows when PS3/4 games have flopped, but I don't act as though I have played them. I do the same with 360/One games.
