Do you agree with him... read below.

David Sirlin, one of the chief designers behind the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix project, has attacked Street Fighter IV and listed what he doesn't like about it.

After picking apart various problems with the design and why he does like them, Sirlin's chief complaint is that Street Fighter IV isn't as casual friendly as has been claimed.

"When I read about the 100/100 scores, I see again and again how "simple and elegant" the game is," he says. "Two super meters, a 3-tier focus attack system, and all the complications above seem to fly in the face of that. Even more though, I hear how "casual friendly" it is. This is deeply mysterious and I'm not sure why this so often claimed... Qcf x 2 +PPP all the time, extra button presses to throw, extra button presses to roman cancel, and many, many extremely difficult link combos work in concert to create that impenetrable wall of execution between you and the actual game."

This has sparked furious back and forth arguing in the comments section of his blog, with Sirlin standing by his claims that Street Fighter IV is actually a difficult game to get into rather than an easy one.

I've read in some reviews that the game does indeed rock your face if your new to fighters. I think they call it casual friendly because of the pretty graphics.

Not "casual friendly" is the best part of the game.

I know what a queue is..... but what is a "cue", unless you're talking about pool, I don't know what you're talking about.

I know what a queue is..... but what is a "cue", unless you're talking about pool, I don't know what you're talking about.

To cue someone is to give them a go-ahead or command to execute a planned or appropriate action.

For example, actors may be cued at the appropriate time to enter a scene.

A cue is a signal for something to happen, especially in the context of film or theater.

The game assumes that you are merely stepping in from SF2. A game which every one and their dog played. When you consider that all the players have to take account of is the new mechanics (if they want) as the core game is fundementally the same only friendly than SF2. Taken all as one though I'd have to agree, it's much more complicated that SF2...but by the same token unlike SF2 the game actually has some very well designed tutorials to help you think along the right lines.

He's NOT attacking the game. Attacking the game would be like saying, "SFIV sucks and it's not part of the series," or "HD Remix and Third Strike is the better Street Fighter." Sirlin speaks the truth. The game really isn't simple to master or play. But I do think it's more friendlier than the other fighting games. All SFII really does is bring the nostalgia back to past SFII players who haven't played a Street Fighter since then and it does a great job of introducing new players as their first SF game. But when it comes to getting down to the core of the game, it's tough and not friendly for casuals. Casuals can definitely play it on Player Matches for sure. But stay away from Ranked. So he's right yet wrong at the same time. He's coming straight from a competitive standspoint since he's a top player himself. But if Capcom dumbed it too much core SF fans will hate it for being too easy. So Capcom had to balance it out as much as he can and I think they did a great job.

Wow. That is what qualifies as an attack these days? It's a simple criticism. People are way too sensitive.

Exactly. He didn't say the game was bad or attack it. He just said it really isn't as casual-friendly as it seems. That's not attacking.

He didn't say it was a bad thing. He said all the reviewers who praised SFIV for being accessible were wrong.

The term "accessible" is relative. Compare it to all the other contemporary fighters (VF/GG/KOF and so on) and you can see that it is by far and away the most acessible for reaching intermediate or higher play levels.

Now SF2HD can't really be included amongst contemporary fighting games for obvious reasons which leaves SF4 at the top of the hill in terms of acessbility.

as much as the game kicks my ass....i enjoy the fact that it is difficult and hard. that it is forcing me to work at it. Fighting games have always been about competitive spirit and will(much like sports to be honest obviousaly more physical skills in that area) as a highly competitive person when it comes to sports, the game really just pushes me personally to want to get better.....I like that. Besides it beats having to here Street Fighter fans become System Shock, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Prince of Persia, etc fans...THEY DUMBED IT DOWN BLAH BLAH BLAH So GO STREET FIGHTER 4 :D

It's Streetfighter, every critcism is an attack that warrants a battle. It is a fighting game you know, what sort of fighting game inspires casual debate? This means war! Though is this really a critisism leveled at the game or at the critics? I can't even tell.

being an old school street fighter fan, i can say that for the people who just liked sf2/ssf2t its a good game. as for me i never got into sf3 (though i did like the alpha series) and the focus-cancel thing has got me all messed up. also i think the 2-1 timeframe is a little ridiculous, i remember in sf2/alpha etc that the 2-1 time window was a lot wider than the 1 frame of animation you must be on now. is it fun? yes, as accessabe as the older titles? no way.
