Challenge question:
How can HD gaming provide something completely outside of aesthetics that is crucial to the gameplay experience?
because graphics makes the game and everything. laughingman42
Oh, you're so right, graphics don;t mean a thing. We'd all be so excited about gaming if we were still playing with NES graphics, huh? Get a clue and quit your denial.
Graphics have a lot to do with a game's quality.
Have an HDtv. Played Gears on an HDtv. Went - ooh, the graphics. Then I played Metroid Prime 2, and was like, huh, this is hard and fun. Then I played Pokemon and Starcraft. Graphics =/= fun.
Edit: Before the flames - I never said Gears wasn't fun. It was. But, quality of a game's graphics has nothing to do with the actual fun had from a game. Or the quality of experience itself.

But they don't have to be hyper-realistic to be high-quality. Otherwise, DS game wouldn't be selling so well--especially the new Pokemon games.:)That happened to me,from going to 480p from 480i.480i really looks HORRIBLE and ill never go back...ill soon try 720p when I but an attachment to hook my 360 up to my 720p moniter...im only scared itll be too hard playing in 480p again.
BTW,I dont think FLOW is designed for 7.1,no games are designed for 7.1 and too my understanding none can be designed for 7.1,only movies.

Nintendo makes its stand with gameplay. But its gameplay for non-gamers and young ones. Yes, hardcore gamers can get into these games, no problem. But you have to admit that Nintendo aims for a younger market. Therefore, graphics aren;t as important for them.

Meh, I don't need to spend that much money on prettier pictures.

Spoken like true SDTV owners. We call you "haters" because you hate what you don;t have. Its Okay. Maybe some day you'll be able to come play with the big boys. Or maybe it will be the next gen before you get "next gen." I won;t hold my breath.

What? Hate what we don't have? What kind of mindless nonsense is this? Big Boys? Last time I checked, buying a big TV isn't a sign of one's masculinity, or superiority. You also over-complicate the concept of "Next-Gen". Yeah I think you holding your breath, cause your not getting the proper oxygen to your brain to understand other peple's opinions.
[QUOTE="SergeantSnitch"]NextGenNow...I totally agree with you. Playing Gears of War at my friends house on his 40" 1080P Bravia LCD HDTV makes me not want to play games on my SDTV. New Sony Bravia Line coming out in July....Damn, time to save up 2k!istreakforfood
wtf he said a positive thing about gears wow and then i see sergent as usual promoting/advertising sony products like he does on most of his post.
anyways does this mean tc wont ever play ps2/ps1 games again since the visuals arent good as the current games out right now. going to miss out on some upcoming ps2 games.
Have you checked out the line up of games releasing this year?? Why would anyone be worried about missing out on a last gen game??

Uh, yeah, why would anyone care about God of War 2, which was released two months ago and was praised by everyone?Like seriously. I mean, seriously. Why would I want to fork out so much money if a game already looks pretty on my non-HDTV. It enhances NOTHING except for what I'm already seeing. I mean, yes, if the oppurtunity arose where I could get a HDTV, I would. But, damn, when I hear someone say "One day you'll get to play with the big boys" in reference to ENHANCED SHARPNESS OF AN IMAGE...it's just like...'dude...just...why would I care if your game looks a little better than mine. Just.......okay. You're such a big boy.' Just...WHAT? Like, what? You're at a party. You see a girl and you're interested. You walk up to her and try to impress her. She says "what do you want?"...and...and you say..."I'm a big boy, I own a HDTV."....it's like...she's going to be like "oh really that makes a better image want to have sex?" and then you won't enjoy the sex because it won't be in high definition...so like...no, you won't even have sex because owning HDTV doesn't define you as a big boy.dave003
I've never seen the words "HDTV", "sex", and "big boy" put into one paragraph untill now
Yeah they do...and for 30 years graphics have been what push the envelope in gaming.then why on earth did motorstorm get only an A? It has freaking awesome graphics It should have been AAA if graphics were most important.[QUOTE="laughingman42"][QUOTE="NextGenNow"][QUOTE="laughingman42"]because graphics makes the game and everything. nnavidson
Motorstorm was robbed, because not only did it look great, but it's a blast to play.
Robbed?, It didnt even have split screen, It had like 8 tracks which were all desert, If anything was robbed it was Zelda and Crackdown.

Pure haterism. If I could I would but I can;t so I hate.
I never said anything about being more masculine or picking up women. My point on "big boys" is that this gen is about HD. That there are those, like myself, that keep with the times and see the benefit in enhanced images and sound. "Big boys" refers to those of us who have actually gotten fully into the HD generation. the rest of you just try to justify not having HD and how its not that bad. Its weak.

What the hell are you talking about, Play an pc rts on a sd screen, Then get back to me, Hd bring sharpness, Bring out the colour, Improves the lighting brings at all the little details of the game, Say a solider in a game has a badge on his uniform well it could be a blured messed if it was desined to be made to be a hd game and played on a sdtv.
Go watch a Kingdom of Heaven, Tears of the sun and Underworld and you can see all the detail, It has the Wow factor but maybe you need glasses i know when i got my Ps3 i was impressed but i got some glasses and i could see alot more detail.

But you have completely missed my point, and your last sentence confirms it. You say that trying to justify the fact that we don't have HDTV is weak, but the fact of that matter is that IT SIMPLY DOES NOT MATTER IF YOUR IMAGE LOOKS A LITTLE BETTER THAN MINE. I'm not hating on HDTV; I know that it is hands down better than the box I'm using. But what I am saying is that I have no reason to feel singled out from "the big boys" just because your image is clearer than mine. It's just like...who the hell cares? I'm playing the same game as you and nothing is going to change that no matter how good it can be made to look.[QUOTE="dave003"]Like seriously. I mean, seriously. Oh okay. The chicks will dig this then.My list of games are (All 360)
Gears of War (It does take some of the grittiness out of it though)
Oblivion (Best improvement)
Dead Rising (You can actually read the text!!!)
Saints Row (Explosions are amazing HD Online is a big +++)
Command and Conquer 3 (Big improvement!)
All games really!
I'm not a graphics whore so I honestly don't care. Better graphics is just a bonus for me and no bonus is worth thousands on an HDTV just yet.
Hell at the moment I'm playing starcraft. That runs at 640x480!
Also to these people who ould NEVER go back to SD and find it unwatchable it must suck never going to see a movie at the cinemas hey? Seeing as it's such a crappy picture and all.

QFT this is my biggest beef with the wii after playing games on the ps3 and 360. I like graphics but sound is a must to put you in the game forza 2 proves this. As for hdtv if you have a 360 or ps3 hdtv is a must @720p.
HDTV's are great for gaming but had one serious problem. Kicking in Madden was impossible on them lol. That is why in theory I believe that they changed kicking into moving the stick back and then forward as opposed to the traditional bar.
As for everything else, and yes even current Madden's. HDTV is a yes.
I, an SDTV owner, played Gears of War on a 56" DLP HDTV running 720p. I realized what I was missing out on.
Then I played Guitar Hero 2 on a 56" DLP HDTV running 720p. I realized what ELSE I was missing out on.
HDTV's are not the be-all-end-all panacea they get made out to be. They make things look better. Much better. But they have delay, which for me a is a damn big issue. I love rhythm games and SHMUPs, two genres that require absolutely perfect timing, and HDTV's ruin those games.|
Until that issue gets fixed, I'm sticking with a SDTV. End of story.
There's no delay in progressive scan.
I think you must have been using composite hookup? There should not be a delay if using component cables.
There is a delay in internal upscaling and filtering (ie. a 480p upscaled to 720p).There's no delay in progressive scan.

Now tell me that HDTV can provide a critical gameplay difference over SDTV, to the point that something I might miss in an SDTV image can be costly but can be seen in HDTV.[QUOTE="Jandurin"]There is a delay in internal upscaling and filtering (ie. a 480p upscaled to 720p).Hmm. Stupid upscaling. I don't notice a delay on my 720p set (with the Wii). It must be infetesimal.
If you don't own an HDTV you really have no idea what the whole huss fuss is about my tiny p is better than your fancy i. But I'll tell you this...after playing on an HDTV seeing games on SDTV made me not even interested in gaming....it's pretty much like there's no point...the picture is so terrible and lame you don't even care about the game..
Word to those thinkin about making the HD plunge...do it...believe me when I say your opinion on a LOT of games will change when you do.
Games you notice the most difference with.
Gears of War
Resistance: Fall of Man
Motorstorm
Oblivion (PS3)
CoD3 (360)
Flow - this one is amazing in 7.1 on an HDTV....weird I know.
NextGenNow
I disagree with the whole "not even interested in games on a standard def TV thing," I was playing and digging TP on a standard def set then going back and playing Gears on my HDTV - didn't have too much of a problem with the transition. That being said, I do agree that it makes a huge difference. There are moments in PS3 and 360 games that are so sharp and visually brilliant looking that you just have to stop and take in the environment for a while because it looks so spectacular, it's like work of art. That doesn't happen with the Wii once become used to the PS3/360 on a large HD display, it can still be very fun to play but the visual pop and visual "Wow" factor disappears... at least in my experience.
Is it necessary? No.
It sure as Hell helps a lot, though.
from what i've seen in all pro gaming tourneys
they use SDTVs, they claim it's for better framerates
i just got my hdtv hooked up to cable
but i gotta say, people who can't go back to the ps2 need to really get over themselves
it's not that significant
i think if anything, it's going to make online matches really unfair ... specifically for RTS games when the resolution is critical

Depends on your TV and the quality of the upscaling. The more upscaling that's needed and the finer the quality, the longer the delay, usually. Please Log In to post.
