The RSX is bassically a G70, and its very well documented the G70 does very poorly with HDR.  Thats one of ATI's X1800 series biggest advantage, much smaller performance hit when using HDR.

Not to mention the X1800 series can do MSAA even with FP HDR.

This isn't an issue about PS3 hardware but about the developer's choice. When it came to Quality vs. Speed they choice speed. If they wanted to get the most of the graphics they would do full HDR but what then they would have to sacrifice framrate. And with the huge amounts of enemies on the screen and the amount of resources that are going to be put into the A.I, heavy particle effects, animations, physics, etc. upping framrate would be the better decision. And let's not forget that Sony is still pushing for a spring launch for the PS3, and if Heavenly Sword is going to make the launch date they are going to have to turn to time saving alternatives.

And the same goes for not doing 1080p. Since the PS3 supports a Blu-Ray format, 1080p is a must for movies. But for the developers, spending extra time in the development process for a feature that will work for only a privileged few who own 1080p HDTVs doesn't make the extra work worth it.

Are you dense? He is saying they had to put the lighting down to 8 BIT in oder to put some sort of anti-aliasing in the game so it wouldent look like a jaggy mess.  It isnt a new technique, MSAA is antialiasing. God some of you are so dense.  Too funny.

This is why MS put the 10 MB of EDRAM in the Xenos.

We are definately not using FP16 HDR anymore, Marco implemented a cool method to get the same results using INT8. Faster and with MSAA, Winner.

Learn to read.  Xenos has a huge frame buffer and can afford high quality lighting AND antialiasing.

This is proven in the fact they have already had to change from HDR, which they had in the trailer, so obviously it won't look the same. That is the difference in performance between a visual demo/trailer and when an actual game is running. Already HS is downgraded from the trailer.

This is simply true from a technical standpoint. This is why Xenos will outperform RSX when it comes to AA, HDR and other effects, while RSX will outperform Xenos is sheer polygon pushing power.

It may have been realtime, but still not a good representaition of the game, simply a demo. This is proven in the fact they have already had to change from HDR, which they had in the trailer, so obviously it won't look the same. That is the difference in performance between a visual demo/trailer and when an actual game is running. Already HS is downgraded from the trailer.

learn to read   he  said they are going to have the same same results  in terms of  HDR.

Riiiight, the "exact same performance" my ass. It didn't run well with HDR, so they changed to a more sucky alternative. What are they going to say "yeah well it does look a bit crapper, but for the performance boost it gives us we can live with it". Hell no. He's going to spin it in his favour, the same way all devs do. Remember when EA said that madden would look like the CG? And then it didn't. I could name loads of these instances but you get the point. Devs will spin it in their favour.

and graphics programing for 2 years

i have passed both classes with a 97 average so i think i know a couple of things

We are definately not using FP16 HDR anymore, Marco implemented a cool method to get the same results using INT8. Faster and with MSAA, Winner.

Learn to read. Xenos has a huge frame buffer and can afford high quality lighting AND antialiasing.

PS3 HAS NO 10 MB OF EDRAM. Period, that means crap lighting and crap AA.

This is simply true from a technical standpoint. This is why Xenos will outperform RSX when it comes to AA, HDR and other effects, while RSX will outperform Xenos is sheer polygon pushing power.


what? no where does it state that the rsx cant do those things(AA,HDR,etc.) and most of all the rsx just went into dev kits this month so the card he's talking about is the 7800GTX. they didnt change it b/c they had to the don't ned it. there's something more effciient that gets the same job done but much faster. also it leaves room for them to reach 60fps b/c they're using something that doesnt require as much what they previously used. the nut job who started this topic just blew it out of proportion to make it look like the ps3 couldn't do hdr.

You are mistaking something. I never said that PS3 couldn't do them, all I said was that it would perform alot worse at them compared to Xenos because of the huge 10MB EDRAM frambuffer. While at the same time RSX has it's advantages in polygon pushing power.
