I have noticed that the gaming industry is parting into two separate camps: the cinematic/story driven game and the pure gaming experience game
The Cinematic experience game offers you high production values andan emphasis on story but is very linear and the gameplay is lacking in comparison to the story telling and presentation. You are not always in control because the game will play a part for you or cutscenes show up often to keep the story going. Heavy Rain is the perfect example of this. Others that fall here would be Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Call of Duty campaigns, God of War, L.A. Noire, Mass Effect 2 and so on
The pure gaming experience game focuses primarily on on gameplay. You are always in control of what's going on and the story is non existent or completely unnecessary. Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel are examples of this type of game. Others that fall under this category would be Zelda, Metroid, inFAMOUS, Devil May Cry, modnation racers and so on.
My question is: Where do your gaming preferences lie at the moment? I'm most definitely still in the second camp. I get frustrated even for the brief moments that batman stops to listen to his earpiece in Arkham Asylum. Gameplay is everything to me.
