Please read

I have noticed that the gaming industry is parting into two separate camps: the cinematic/story driven game and the pure gaming experience game

The Cinematic experience game offers you high production values andan emphasis on story but is very linear and the gameplay is lacking in comparison to the story telling and presentation. You are not always in control because the game will play a part for you or cutscenes show up often to keep the story going. Heavy Rain is the perfect example of this. Others that fall here would be Uncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Call of Duty campaigns, God of War, L.A. Noire, Mass Effect 2 and so on

The pure gaming experience game focuses primarily on on gameplay. You are always in control of what's going on and the story is non existent or completely unnecessary. Super Mario Galaxy and its sequel are examples of this type of game. Others that fall under this category would be Zelda, Metroid, inFAMOUS, Devil May Cry, modnation racers and so on.

My question is: Where do your gaming preferences lie at the moment? I'm most definitely still in the second camp. I get frustrated even for the brief moments that batman stops to listen to his earpiece in Arkham Asylum. Gameplay is everything to me.

It depends on the genre if it's a hack and slash game i only care about the gameplay, but for a RPG i care about the story. Also how is Infamous just about the gameplay?

It's purely taste-matter, really. There is no "this is better", they are just different, end of story. EDIT: and I like mix of both.

I'm all about the gameplay. Give me the Marios and Ninja Gaidens, you can keep the Heavy Rains and God of Wars. Thats not to say I dont enjoy story driven games, but gameplay is always the main priority for me. If the story is great, then thats a nice bonus.

I've always had this mindset in a way, but I seem to be getting increasingly more one sided towards gameplay over the years. I think its a combination of games having less interesting stories nowadays and the fact that I'm getting older and less easily amused.

How is it not? Sure it has a nice story to go along with it, but you are always in control of the situation at all times except for the very few and short cutscenes.

A good narrative provides a framework -- a context if you will -- to drive the gameplay and make it compelling and relevant... I think Bioshock is a good example of a game that does a reasonably good job at this... I enjoyed Heavy Rain, but I think it (and more recently LA Noire) is a little too heavy-handed with the narrative and not fleshed out enough in the gameplay department...

games like Mario don't appeal to me ... a game has to have a good balance of story and gameplay elements for me to take it seriously. Even as a child I didn't find Mario fun, I'd rather play RPG's on hand helds.

Agreed, it depends on the game. Some focus on story and are great at it, some focus on gameplay, and are great at it. I would not want to lose one or the other.

Pikminmaniac

A combination of both with a significant focus on fun gameplay or strictly fun gameplay. Heavy Rain just didn't have fun gameplay imo which made it drag out for far too long.

As forUncharted 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Call of Duty campaigns, and ME 2, I find those games to at least have fun gameplay and the story elements enhance the experience for me.

SMG (at least 1 since I haven't played 2) is just pure fun to me. No need for story to enhance the experience since it offers so much variety in levels.

Dude seriously, you are trying to hard to troll. Just let it come naturally, and then the people will respond.. your comment was too "forced", needs to be more 'organic' :) Personally, I really like backstory/story to games. doesn't even have to be in the spotlight(ala starcraft/warcraft/diablo and the 'manuals' with mini-novels for backstory). Man I loved those stories in the starcraft manual. Gameplay, incredibly important, without it, games aren't games.. so i can't say that i could pick story over gameplay.. i mean seriously, no gameplay = no game to me.

As long as it's entertaining I personally don't care if it does or doesn't focus on the plot. Either or is fine or a "mix" although I rarely find that games with a good plot/presentation aren't fun to play in their own right.

Pretty sad, don't you think? Especially considering how the vast majority of video game stories are just downright poor.

I don't see the problem. I'm not saying I need a top-grade storyline, just something well-written enough to give me reason to play.

The Princess has been kidnapped. Are you bad enough of a dude to rescue her and give Bowser's army an asswhooping across the universe...with your hands tied behind your back?

-----

Pretty much all games' plots can be boiled down to that level of simplicity so this seems like a non-issue to me.

Good point. Replayability has far more to do with gameplay than story. Lasting appeal in general is this way. If a game has a lot of content, most of it happens after credits or have nothing to do with the main story.

Heavy Rain is the best game ever made.

And not because of its story.

The gameplay is king.

Constant decision making. Constant reflex tests. Heightened stakes (story keeps going if you die), etc.

If anything, story is the weakest part of Heavy Rain.

Video games tend to have mediocre stories (with some exceptions like some of the better JRPGSs like Chrono Trigger; and adventure games like Phoenix Wright), so of course I'm going to go with gameplay.

And as for Heavy Rain, any story virtues it might have are canceled out by rather funky/wooden voice acting/dialogue. Voice acting that sounds the way Heavy Rain's does just makes me not want to come near the game with a ten foot pole.

Everytime I come here, someone is comparing games that are in no way alike. "Bro is Tekken better that Call Of Duty?"

I won't pick because that's a silly Vs.

This gen I enjoy cinematic gaming a lot more than ever before, character models can actually portray emotions. However between that and a pure gameplay experience which puts story in the back seat I will take the best gameplay experience all the time. Each has it's place for me.
