heres whats baffles me about this. Grant it, the US and Europeprices arent decided, but hey probaly arent going to be much lower then the covnergent rate of 25000 yen (being 300 dollars american)The reason DS did so well was because it was affordable and all that and thats why when mothers went in they bought it for their kids. You really think Mom and dad are going to spend like 250 or more dollars (assuming thats what it is) on a Handheld game machine that the kid could drop and break? Doubt it. theres certain expectations to handheld pricing. and thats usualy nothing above 200 or 220. PSP had the same problem and didnt sell massively because it was so expensive at launch for a handheld. And while this is arguably cooler then a PSP, the same principle of price applies. 250 to 300 is console territory normaly. (maybe not so much this gen, but still)

I really hope this thing is atleast 220 when it comes over there. If its alot higher then that, I think its in trouble.

But it isnt very likely to be liek 100 dollars cheaper then the Japan Price. Not saying it has to be that cheap, but around that ball park is the only resonable thing.

What baffles me most is that Nintendo knows how to price their systems, and they called out Sony's faults with the PSP. Why are they repeating a well known mistake?

Sony has a clear shot at this. They have the brand, they can have the games, and they can also have the specs. If they could do it all with a reasonable price then they could easily overtake the handheld market. We'll just have to wait and see.

SONY faces the issue of releasing a new handheld that dosent have glasses free 3D. Imagine a thing liek the 3DS, which is really new and ZOMG worthy with its innovation, going up againstjust amore powerful PSP. SONY would need to undercut Nintendo big time to avoid being left in the dust again. Or SONY would really need to introduce something worthwhile while keeping price down.

I doubt they'll overtake the market, but they can gain some shares if they can release the PSP2 at a lower cost. Make it slightly stronger than the PSP and have a decent launch lineup then they should do good.

Yeah, lets hope they dont pull a 2006, high price point, exaggerated specs and very few games for the launch :/. I want the next PSP to be a megaton starting day one.

I really have no doubt that the 3DS will sell tons at launch regardless of price. Im mainly thinking after launch madness. I really cant see PSP taking over the market. 3DS looks too cool and revolutioanry for handhelds. PSP 2 would need to totaly top it in nearly every way.

I know that Sony includes tax when ever they post Japanese prices. So Nintendo may have done the same thing.

"Sony Computer Entertainment Japan (SCEJ), a division of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. responsible for business operation in Japan, today announced that the PlayStation®3 (PS3®) computer entertainment system (CECH-2500 series) with 160GB and 320GB hard disk drive (HDD) will become available on July 29, 2010 in Japan at a recommended retail price (RRP) of 29,980 yen and 34,980 yen (including tax) respectively."

Well technically, North America prices for the Nintendo 3DS is not yet confirmed to be $300. There might still be a chance that it's cheaper. I was also hoping it would be in the $200 range. But you also have to look at the technology and costs of this new product. I'm sure this one much more expensive than the Sony PSP and even more powerful.

Nintendo - Please make sense and change the price for North America!

To be fair, the PS3 has a bluray player built in. When the PS3 was released, bluray players were going for $1000.

Is the Playstation Brand that strong anymore though? Sure, it is strong, but really, XBOX has taken alot of its market share and so has nintendo. Usualy when people think Video games this gen, its probaly 360. So while I dont doubt the PS brand is still strong, I doubt how super strong it really is right now.

Yeah, pretty much. Pokemon is really the only reason i kept my DS to be honest. I still dont want to count SONY out though, but im saying they have a uphill battle right now. 3DS is gonna hit and the hype and madness will probaly be huge if they demo the thing right for people so they get a grasp on what the 3DS is. You cant convey this thing on a commercial, you have to see it for yourself. thats where Demo booth and stations come in.

$250 is pretty much what you can all expect. Considering the Yen's Conversion today (far higher than it has ever been before in comparison to the dollar), the cost of exporting, and the taxes associated, you can bet it will be exactly the $250 price point. Still too high imo, but not the mental "woah" that $300 is.

3DS is a much more powerful handheld and offers 3D tech, so honestly i cant imagine it being launched at a very low/affordable price.. Probably as many others said it wont be cheaper than $249, but i wouldnt be surprised it will launch at $279-$299...If its accompanied by a very good launching line-up of titles it will still enjoy great sales..

As for the PSP2, i think we'll start reading much more on this handheld round end october/early november, cause Sony knows they need to grab the media / gamers attention considering the handheld market has always been dominated by Nintendo.. Sony needs to keep PSP fans interested in the PSP brand so showing them work in progress titles for PSP2, the PSP2 specs / design etc etc will keep them 'away' from getting a 3DS..

But honestly, what are they gonna have to do from a tech standpoint to deal with the 3DS. You can have it be more powerful, sure, but how are you going to deal with the "HOLY $@&! No glasses 3d!" effect the #DS si gonna have? And if SONY makes it mroe powerful taht probaly will come with a high price tag. I think SONY needs to get away from trying to make a cutting edge graphic wise handheld and focus on the actual games and gameplay.

DS Lite in Yen to USD conversion: $200

DS lite price in USD when released: $129

Its possible $199 could be the price, but i think we're looking at $229 to $249 realistically

Right now Nintendo's in a position where they could sell a NES for $600 and the masses would buy it. Same thing happens with Apple and their 2,000 dollarscrappy laptops and other products.

What I find really strange is that Nintendo talks so much about innovation this, innovation that and the 3DS is nothing more than a 3DS with more capable hardware.

Because of bad marketing decisions. Simple as that.

Gue1

??? I'm going to assume you mean it's nothing more than a DS with more capale hardware. Honestly that's what I want it for, I would buy another Wii if they just improved online gaming and graphics alone with a great line up of games.

It's cause the Xbox has Halo. To be honest the PS3 has a much superior exclusive library, when it comes to variety. Games like Heavy Rain, Ratchet and Clank, Motorstorm, LBP are often forgotten about when comparing systems.

I think SONY needs to get away from trying to make a cutting edge graphic wise handheld and focus on the actual games and gameplay.

i dont have answers :) i'm just a simple gamer lol

However one cannot exclude the possibility Sony also has 3DTV's which dont require glasses, so they might also surprise us.. we'll have to wait and see what happens in the coming months..

Question:- is anybody else concerned that 3DS will suffer when played outdoors - referring to the actual 3D effects.. (you know with sunlight etc, i think it will effect the screen sharpness / 3d effects)

DS Lite in Yen to USD conversion: $200

DS lite price in USD when released: $129

Its possible $199 could be the price, but i think we're looking at $229 to $249 realistically

darth-pyschosis

Wow that is a pretty big difference.

Hey guys!

It's not $599 USD!

Merex760

To be fair, the PS3 has a bluray player built in. When the PS3 was released, bluray players were going for $1000.

to be fair, you can take 3D Pictures.

If it was 300 I'd still buy it, just means one or two less games I get at launch. Though it'll probably be between 180-250 bucks in the US. I'm more disappointed when it launches. I was really hoping it'd launch this year. Oh well, at least I'll have a job by then so I'll have no problem buying this.

thats a very good question. I mean, handheld gaming in sunlight is already kind of iffy to begin with. you susaly have to be in teh shade or something, or not in direct sunlight. I hope 3D isnt going to have to be a Indoors only kind of thing with it. also, lets hope the Battery life is good.

It's all based on Demand. Look at Apple they have a market and so does Nintendo. It's going to be $299 here in the US count on it.
