I've finally decided to give PC gaming a try and I was wondering if the Dell XPS 720 formula red was the right choice to start my PC gaming off. Right now I have the Dell XPS 400. I just want to be able to run crysis and other high end games in the near future. I hope I like PC gaming. It seems quite fun but the only game that I ever play on my PC is the Sims 2. Thats about it.

Do NOT get a DELL XPS, unless your crazy wealthy, honest to god now, building your own is easy, you can pay half the ammount for an equally good rig.

Dell XPS charge purely for name and look, I had a Dell XPS 600, Graphics cards fried because the cooling was god awful, the specs wernt even that great for the time, and I payed £1100 for it!!!

Now ... I can max everything, except Crysis which I play on very high at 25 FPS ... for £650! because i built it myself... with no prior experiance, just research.

I don't think anyone will recommend Dell PC's, they're not good for what you pay.

No, I will never recommend a Dell no matter how rich you were, I advice going to PC hardware forums and asking for an alternative for this. Also when you look at the comments section at the bottom, there's already several people complaining about random BSODs and overheating, not very promising.

Try these. I know a couple of people who use the U.K cyberpower. Cheap and great service/quality.

If you dont wanna build your own.

Build your own, is very easy. Don't waste money on that kind of computers, with the money you save you could get some awesome games.

Also, check this link: http://kotaku.com/345278/crytek-specs-out-an-affordable-crysis-pc

Crytek, builds a computer under 900 that can play crysis at very high, well you don't get the peripherals. You should check also on system wars a guy that build a 500 or 400 pc that could play crysis at high.

There are cheaper places than Dell regaurdless.

I didnt have a clue either, but as long as you research parts (not much trouble, you just ask on the PC Hardware forum .) watch some youtube vids.

As long as you got screwdrivers its straight foward, everything fits in place in obvious ways ... either labeled/colour coord or sockets that obviosuly match ...

Its not the slightest bit scary ;)

I dunno how it's in USA, but where I live the stores where you buy computer parts also assemble the computers for a small fee(around 30 bucks), or sometimes even for free. So all that you have to do is choose the parts.

Seriously, you'll save a bunch of money if you build you're own. The main components to worry about in any game rig is the CPU, GPU and RAM. Do some research on those three components and build your rig around them. You'll also need a case, motherboard, harddrive, power supply and a dvd player. It's really not that complex, just google "how to buid a pc" and you'll find plenty of guides. Youtube even has a guide.

I don't wanna sound like a pain in the bottom nor am i getting at fellow pc gamers here but......

Some people just don't want to build there own pc. I built one pc, the one b4 this one i have now. I decided to get this one pre built. It only cost me about £100 more than if i'd have done it myself. I get insurance too with that.

Maybe it would be better to post sites that build custom PC's rather than just tell him to build his own. It can be daunting for a first timer.

I don't know how.

If you want to learn, you'll find out it reall isn't that hard. Once you learn how to do it, you'll find PC gaming alot more satisfying.Once you learn how to build a PC you'll be able to build your PC to your exact specifications and although if done properly, you probably won't save as much as you would buying a Dell, it will surely be a lot more satisifying.

If you still want to buy a Dell, Check sites like gotapex.com they usually have links directly to Dell with some great deals. usually you'll find that they are selling those PCs with free flatpanel monitors.

Why doesn't TC get a custom build computer from (insert computer store) with the individual hardware pieces picked out, and have the store assemble it, install the OS ect - for $50 odd more.

As you are right for a first timer it can be daunting, and some people - most people - dont want to have to do it.

Buying from Dell is the last thing you should resort to, buying a PC from a reasonable local vendor is just fine - just make sure you pick your own parts.

Nope, it was after my warranty. It didnt matter much, because it was 2 Nvidia 6800's SLI ( again a waste, when they should of offered a 7800 ... ) so I still had 1x 6800 left.

however, that then lead me to buy an 8800 so I cant complain, massive, MASSIVE jump. which I then moved onto my self built PC. nearly2 years now, and only 1 game cannot be maxxed on it, which is still played at very high ;)

The graphic card fried due to terrible cooling, ... 2 fans ... small ones at that , with barely any vents on the XPS 600 model, my self build PC is pretty much completely open venting, 1 giant fan on the top, 1 really powerful one at the back, 2 huge ones at the front, and a Graphics card exhaust fan... all much cheaper.

I really don't understand why is it such a problem in the US... In Europe (at least in the country i'm living in) you can come to a local pc hardware store with a list of components for your rig, they're gonna assemble it completely free of charge, and even give you 2-3 year shop warranty.

As an alternative, I can recommend you to buy a relatively affordable C2D/2-3GB HP desktop with a integrated graphics, then buy a decent video card and install it yourself, trust me - it's not difficult, even for a person who has never even looked inside a computer it's not gonna take longer than 10-15 minutes...

You probably heard this from everybody, but XPSs are a waste of money. They are far overpriced for what you get. If you want a PC of that power, build it yourself. If you don't know how to do it, there is a PC hardware fourm and several unions about PCs. Just ask people there to help you buy the right parts.

TC, if you desire the *full* PC gaming experience, you must build your own PC, or at the very least upgrade whatever you already have, although upgrading Dells is a pain in the ass, and I would know.

The PC hardware forum, or *any* PC hardware forum, would be happy to help you.

Seriously, I'm kind of piling on after all the other posts, but yeah. The XPS line is WAY overpriced. If you have that much cash for a gaming pc, there are probably better bang for the buck options than Dell if you don't want to build your own rig. That's the crazy thing about dell. You can get an amazing deal on a pc, but you can also get ripped off hard depending on how you shop with Dell.

When you PC gamers say building your own do you mean like literally building it yourself and installing it. Or picking and chosing at a store like Futureshop where you can build your own PC.

Cause i'm thinking of maybe getting ing into PC gaming late this year or next year, gonna get a PS3 first but still.

I do NOT wanna build it myself as I know it'll mess it up.

If you dont want to build your own (which is fine), find a place that can build custom computers (you'll probably have the best luck/deals at a mom-and-pop store) or a website that allows you to pick and choose individual parts, then compare prices.

Do NOT buy a Dell. Build your own. If you are scared to try and build your own, then buy all the parts and take it to best buy and pay them to put it together for you. Either way, you will get the parts you want and alot cheaper (even with Best Buy building it). Doing it this way, you can still spend all the money you would have getting a DEll, only be able to buy alot better computer.

If you don't know how to build a computer get someone else too. Buy the parts yourself and get someone to build it and set everything up. Easy and much much cheaper.

As in by the Case/Power Supply/Motherboard/RAM/CPU/Graphics Card/HardDrive/OPtical DRIVE and putting them together yourself.

very very easy, since your buying from hardware specific sites, its alot cheaper, you get OEM versions of software (Making Vista half the price ect ) .

Really easy to do aswell, everything is so obvious, failing that 1 Youtube video would get you through it, since nowadays all PC architecture is very very similar.

As others said build your own. If you cant do that then RESEARCH the parts you want, order them, and have a local computer shop assemble them. You will save literally thousands of $$ and have superior parts than the Dell.

Put honestly building a computer isn't hard at all, problem is you haven't even tried to learn how to build one. The first step I took on building a computer was typing in "How to build a computer" into google, tons of articles, guides, and youtube videos out there. 12 year olds build comptuer(started at 14 myself), no reason why you guys cant either. I remember someone in another thread refer to it as big boy legos.
