when the ps2 launched it went from cd-rom to dvd-rom and the masses said it's not needed right now and it costs to much. now 120 million plus units later they were wrong. my point is that the ps3 is going through the same scenario going from dvd to blu ray sony builds their systems for the future and it may not be needed now ( which i think it is ) but it will be very soon.so to the sony haters be fair warned that the sky is the limit for this system.

The Ps2 had some great exclusives in its 1st year and it had a year head start over the xbox and the gamecube.

The ps3 has neither of those.

Erm ... DVD was a huge step up from VHS .... not a minor "Higher resolution improvement" with more storage space ... there is a HUGE difference.

The past is dead. Stop bringing it up. If so i could say well is Nintendo back cause Super Nes started off losing to Sega and then when Donkey Kong Country came out it blew past it in sales? No.

I feel that the PS3 will overtake the 360 down the road just based on common sense. Do i own one? No, i do have a ps 1 and 2 though, but i also have the 360 and enjoy it. Once some of those main games hit the PS3 it don't matter how bad the ram is or how silly it is to make games for it, Final Fantasy(As much as it has sucked since 6) Will sell systems all over. Maybe not on scale of Halo 3 in terms of sales of course, but it will sell systems. Just like Nintendo, oh they have been going down hill since N64 and well i agree there never be what they were in the early 90's ever again, but once a Mario hits for it, its gonna sell systems.

If people today stopped crying all the time and worrying to much on a reviewers score all the time, maybe gaming would be fun again. Instead it has turned into the music buisness...full of crap and shoved out the door for the quick buck. I can see Apple doing iGames in a few years and forcing people to dl games onto a 1 inch screen that you can touch.

We both know that MGS2 didn't sell very well ouside Japan. But anyway. What I mean first year of PS2 was terrible compare after 2002. It sold nearly 10 mil. in the next 5 years, it sold 110 more mill. so what I meam, all consoles need at least a year until we can judge them!

Why don't the cows come up with better excuses on why the PS3 is bombing in sales, like the PS2 and PS3 are both "Black" when launched and see how sucessful the PS2 was.

I guess people have to grasp at anything they can to give the "hope", and at the horrid sales of the PS3, cows need as much hope as they can get.

If history meant something then N64 would have killed Playstation 1.

If Console Specs meant something then the sega saturn and dreamcasts would still have killed competition.

If fanboys ramblings meant something then we may as well get a gun, point it to our heads and pull the trigger.

It's not even worth posting in this topic. You cows are getting so pathetic it's almost sad. When PS2 was launching DVD market penetration was everywhere. Blu-Ray is totally pre-mature. It's not equipped on computers and movie stores don't offer blu-ray movies (at least where I live). This history of last gen formats can not be applied in today's scenarios.

History does mean something as in "The 3rd console curse"! *spooky music starts playing* *evil laughter from a distance can be heard*

DVD had no competition!

Blu-ray has it will take a while for the winner to be visible.

we can't compare blu-ray to dvd for one simple reason: dvd didn't require the purchase of a new tv.

agreed, plus to enjoy Blue-ray you need a HD set. which wasn't needed when people turned from CD's to DVD's.

not this again..... when the PS2 was released in late 01 it was clear that DVD would take over plus VHS was the standard for almost 20 years so it was time for a change and on top of that it was a HUGE leap from VHS to DVD that you could see withthe TV youalready hadnot so big from DVD to HD DVD/ Blu-ray

One could say the same for Sony fans. What happened last gen when a console capable of slightly more impressive graphics and containing an untested game technology (standard hard drive) went up against a cheaper console with many more games available because it released earlier and had more 3rd party support? Oh yeah, the cheaper console (PS2) outsold the more technically impressive console (Xbox) by a ratio of more than 4 to 1.

Wow, maybe history really is repeating itself, but not in the way Sony fanboys would like...

When DVD was released most TVs didn't have the composite connections required for DVD playback. I guess that depends on how you define "good". Most LESS THAN 40" HDTVs retail for LESS THAN $1000USD. (GameSpot's HTML parser sucks)

What on earth are you talking about? Even we europeans have had better connections than that on our TVs since like '84 or something, I have a very hard time believing that americans have had it worse.

And you're forgetting that they way Sony and MS are working are very different. The Playstation brand is extremely strong. MS never makes games like SOTC,Ico and LBP just because they want it to play it safely. That's what I personally think differs Sony from competition. They're not afraid of trying new stuff despite of the budget.

The DVD was miles ahead of VHS. The PS2 was also launched before the competition. The PS2 wasn't $600 either. Talkining about history repeating itself, why is it that the most expensive and powerful console always has poor advertsing which tends to focus on the console being greater than thou rather than being a good product, and why is it that console always fails horribly?

So were Atari, Sega, and Nintendo :|

Also, Sony didn't make those games. They published them. Most of the PS2's support came form the fact it was doing so well, and LBP is on the PS3 because the devs didn't like the Wii.

Media Molecule are developing LBP. I was wrong about SOTC and ICO though. I think the reason MS doesn't make gameslike these are because are probably because of the fact they barely develop any games.

When DVD was released the standard connection on TVs (in the US) was RF/Coaxial.
