It seems History does repeat.

In a news article by eFluxMedia - they have stated that PS3 sales have increased amazingly. So much in fact that the world sales will increase to over 11 million by the end of the fiscal year. And what do Sony owe all this to? History.

Well of course not just history. I mean the way they go about selling their console in the past has certainly helped them prepare for this gen. The battlefield though was something they weren't expecting - however their sales plan that has worked proficiently in the past is being repeated here and is soon to make all predictions come true and allow PS3 to be the best console of this gen.

I guess it already is technically the best. But it hasn't quite got all the sales required to be considered to be the best. But don't worry - I have uncovered Sonys plan. A career in marketing has taught me little techniques and ways of marketing a product to get the best results. And here is how they do it, and how the PS3 will win the generation.

It PAYS to wait. Sony went in head strong for a reason. They went in cocky and it was all planned. They knew the gimmicky, new, Nintendo console was just all innovation and no substance and not too much variety in gaming from the very beginning. They could predict that it would be a big seller instantly. They also realised that the 360 was all power and no innovation and not much variety in gaming. Sony were never worried for a second when they saw sales figures earlier this year. Not a second. You know why?

Things that are based around a gimmick get old. Purely and simply. Have you youngsters ever heard of a ball attached to a string which is attached to cup and you toss the ball into the cup? Well...that same game could be compared to the Wii. On its release - it was innovative. Children were jumping up and down stating "Wow I've never seen something like this before. And at only a dollar - it's affordable and new!" Now - Sony have decided to release a PS3. The children would be saying "oh no. That is much too expensive. I can get the ball cup game right away now." But little did they realise that the ball cup game would actually hold their attention for a little while before they found it repetitive and tiring. So they went out and bought the PS3 when it came down in price.

Maybe people bought a Wii for the sole reason that it will last them 6 months, then they trade it in and get a PS3 (which will last them into the next gen) when the price has come down. Sony realise this and when they finally get more good quality gaming out - plus the old favourites - the people will throw down their wii motes and pick up the most innovative and powerful console on the market with the biggest variety of games - the Playstation 3.

After all - in the words of the famous Miss Shirley Bassey: "it's all just a little bit of history repeating"

Thank you for your time.

Let's not pretend Sony planned to drop the price so soon this generation. Sales increased because the price dropped. It's simple economics. Notice how the price of the next gen consoles correlates with their userbases?

And for the PS brand, the PS3 is hardly repeating history; the PS1 and PS2 released, steadily and quickly overtook the competition, and stayed there. By your own admission, an estimate of 11 million units sold by the end of the year would still put them well behind the Wii and 360's current userbase, even without those consoles sales this Xmas.

Not only that but Sony are dropping prices just when really awesome games are starting to come out. It's like they have hundred dollar bills attached to string attached to their pockets. you know? ;)

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Sony say "fiscal year end"? Which means Sony planned to sell 11 million by March 2008 and for all we know, it's probably a projected shipped number.

Yes it is simple economics. But you fail to see the fact that they decrease the price at specific times when they can show off their top quality AAA prediction worthy titles. This gives an indication that it seems very well to be premeditated.

They can show off Final Fantasy and Metal Gear Solid at any time. Just because they do it alongside a price drop (or a new SKU) doesn't make it premeditated.

but you really think they planned this?

perhaps. I mean when I have a flick through at articles on the PS2 and its launch titles I can see that they had a sluggish start as well. I believe that this was planned because Sony were kind of showing off the Blu Ray player to begin with, give it some support and offer it as a cheaper alternative - explaining the rather lacklustre launch titles. To kind of show it off as the "complete entertainment package." Much like how they showed off the DVD player in the PS2 and offered it as a cheaper alternative to more expensive DVD players. Now that more titles have come out they are dropping the price and luring people in.

Price drop = sales. That is true. So let's apply some psychology manipulation techniques here.

A technique called the "Door in the face" states that people make a ridiculously large claim (offer the PS3 for $1000) and then if that is rejected offer more of a discount so it "seems" more reasonable and a more dramatic price drop.

When there is a choice there's generally premeditation involved because you make a selection before hand.

Slow start with the PS2? It had over 10 AAAs in it's first year, not to mention the strength of launching with SSX and Tekken Tag. It completely destroyed the competition once it arrived (the DC).

The cases really aren't comparable.

I really doubt there was a great deal of premeditation in dropping the price, it was more a reaction to the sluggish PS3 and strong Wii sales.

As I said - there's more competition this time 'round. Sony paraded Resistance around like they did Tekken Tag and probably they were hoping for an AAA out of it - but again the technology is much more advanced this time around. Perhaps they got this idea of being patient with their releases from the beginning? Or if that seems a little bit of a stretch - perhaps they were merely interested in showing it off as a blu ray player for its first year and therefore as an Entertainment System rather than just a gaming console?

I'm not sounding cocky. i'm simply just showing how these events are seemingly leading to an increase in sales of the PS3 and how I think this might have been premeditated. Who cares about the number Sony has planned, nintendo planned sales for the Wii and they were pretty much more than what they had planned for - the fact is their sales are increasing

Do you know what they are planning!? NO! If anyone in here doesn't work for Sony then they need to stop with assumptions. No one has a crystal ball, maybe they did plan it and maybe they didn't. All that matters is that it's working.

I'm curious why the TS says "history repeats".

What exactly was repeated?

The Wii? X360? DS?

Ok. PS2 had awesome titles at launch - yet the price in Australia (not sure the rest of the world - sorry) dropped within a few weeks of release. Then the sales started to really pick up. Perhaps an idea from the past crept up on Sony?

Well until we actually see a consistent and steady rise of PS3 sales, everything you have stated are nothing but baseless predictions. Besides all that I strongly object to your comparison of a ball-and-cup to a Nintendo Wii as they are completely and utterly different.

To be totally truthful - I think it is a little bit of both. They might have had an idea kind of like an (*analogy time*) In case of emergency break glass plan. As the new gen loomed closer I think they realised that it wasn't going to be a walk in the park for them. So yes they adapted and they premeditated and used a few ideas from the past that helped them achieve success for them then. But I admit that they were expecting Resistance to be as successful gameplay wise and sales wise as Tekken Tag.

Yes Blackbond that is absolutely correct. Their idea in simple terms: Appeal to home entertainment / movie goers with the cheap Blu Ray player (thus pushing sales for the new format) then drop the price and appeal to the gamer just when big releases are right around the corner.

I have to say I think the price drops were planned and they have already planned their price drops for next year and beyond.

I think Sony has some creditablity to repair with the casuals because many don't see it as "the console to buy" because of the games and many are uninformed so they go on for a long time assuming that its a bad buy.

Do you know what they are planning!? NO! If anyone in here doesn't work for Sony then they need to stop with assumptions. No one has a crystal ball, maybe they did plan it and maybe they didn't. All that matters is that it's working.

I have to say I think the price drops were planned and they have already planned their price drops for next year and beyond.

seems kind of like a "screw you" to early adopters. :?

Well until we actually see a consistent and steady rise of PS3 sales, everything you have stated are nothing but baseless predictions. Besides all that I strongly object to your comparison of a ball-and-cup to a Nintendo Wii as they are completely and utterly different.Popadophalis

The ball and cup was just an analogy for the innovation of the Nintendo Wii. The sheer crudeness of the analogy is not meant to be taken 100% literally but just as an example. I could have used something but that ball and cup game was the first thing that came to my mind after watching that family guy episode. ;)

The way that Renegade has put it - it does seem like that. Maybe its that 'double appeal' that I've mentioned earlier that explains the price drops. Anyway most price drops tend to seem like a 'screw you' you early purchasers but most people enjoy being one of the first to own the console or getting the longer playing time out of it...

It doesn't pay Sony. Sony would rather you not wait and buy now.

Yes Blackbond that is absolutely correct. Their idea in simple terms: Appeal to home entertainment / movie goers with the cheap Blu Ray player (thus pushing sales for the new format) then drop the price and appeal to the gamer just when big releases are right around the corner.

I think Sony has some creditablity to repair with the casuals because many don't see it as "the console to buy" because of the games and many are uninformed so they go on for a long time assuming that its a bad buy.

Absolutely. A lot of the public are ill-informed when it comes to technology. When I waltzed in to my local electronic store (Harvey Norman for those Aussies) they had the PS3 connected up to...not only a demo kiosk but also an LCD TV to show off the Blu Ray player. So that goes to show the 'double appeal' it has.

I wouldn't read too much into it. For a time, the PS3 was the #1 selling item on Amazon, remember?

11 million by the end of the fiscal year is a possibility. 11 million by the end of 2007 is not a possibility. The PS3 has been a failure, thus far, even moreso than the PSP "failed." Sure, it's keeping its head above water, but it's not winning the marathon, that's for sure.

I hate when people say "Oh you just wait!" or "Sony was planning this all from the start!". I don't buy into that, because no one with a reasonable mind would want to start out the way Sony has, giving up such a masive lead in sales and so forth.

Severel excecutives fired later, and highly acclaimed games jumping ship, or becoming multiplat, leads one to believe that if Sony was planning this all from the start, then they must be the biggest idiots in the world.

Seriously, just using a cost/benifit analysis makes one wonder what; it's clear that Sony thought they could run the next-gen, it was clear that let their ego severely hinder their chances of doing any good and it is clear that Nintendo and Microsoft know what they are doing.

Think of this analogy - Stephen Bradbury was an australian short track speed skater who won an Olympic gold medal at the 2002 games. He was trailing behind everyone else - then all the other opponents fell over just before the finish line and he coasted past for victory. What's to say PS3 won't gain ground in a years time now that they've reduced the price. I mean the main issue that people seemed to have on its release was that it was so expensive. now the price has dropped - we will see sales increase a lot.

Ummm...I think you were misinterpreting what you thought they planned. You can only plan things that are in your control. Which is why i said they planned on Resistance getting an AAA. Obviously they had a few things in place and the overall long term plan is still in fruition.

It seems History does repeat.

In a news article by eFluxMedia - they have stated that PS3 sales have increased amazingly. So much in fact that the world sales will increase to over 11 million by the end of the year.

Thank you for your time.

lord_aquinas

hows that ?? by the end of...2007 ?? 11 millions ?? thats like selling...3-4 millions in like 3 weeks ? , not bashing the PS3 sales but...not even the Wii sells that quantity in such a short period of time :o

With a price drop just in time for the second-busiest retail month of the year in NA, the PS3 only manage to sell the average amount that the Wii or DS sell in any given month. The price drop was a huge boost, percentage-wise, but it was not a huge boost in volume. The differnce between 100 and 300 should not be thought of as a 300% increase, but rather as a change of plus-200 units. The PS3's gain was miniscule.

Even if it could manage 200k a month, which would be double what it has been averaging, that would still put it right on pace with the 360, or slightly behind. The 360 is on track to sell about 40 million consoles. That is no HUGE success, especially not for the PS name.

The PS3 is WAY behind, and we're already nearing the halfway point of the generation for Sony's direct competition (MS). It doesn't stand a chance of seeing the kind of success that the PS2 saw. Will it beat out the 360? Maybe. Will it beat the Wii? Not in a million years.

Cows, cows, cows... I thought sales didn't matter!

Erebyssial

sales don't mean quality. But ultimately sales matter in determining which console reigns surpreme in the gen. Not sure who in their right mind would deny that?
