does anybody else think it would have been better just to combine these 3 stories into half life 3 with better graphics and gameplay than half life 2 (as sequels usually have) and be released in say 1 or 2 years from now?

it would have been cheaper, it would have made me not so disappointed with the length of each expansion and we wouldnt have to wait a year or 2 for a tiny little chapter of the story. i am sorry but i want a longer, better lasting experience for half life even if it means waiting a bit longer for a complete package rather than a shortadd on (however good it may be). to me it just seems stupid that they are doing this, the orange box costed 90 bucks and all i really wanted was episode 2, portal and tf2 were okay but ffs why force me to buy them aswell as hl2 and episode 1 which i already have???

yea, i could go on for a while but the bottom line is id rather hl3 in 2 years rather than episodes 1, 2 and 3 once every year for 3 years. breaking up the story with these huge gaps between each episode is ruining the flow of the story and stopping the developers from improving on the gameplay and graphics in a meaningful way from hl2.

just keep in mind hl fans i still love hl2 and eps 1 and 2.

anyway, thoughts?

That's why they don't charge you $50 for just one episode.

But releasing them every couple of years helps keep it from getting stale. Ep2 brought me back to Half-Life after those years at which point I forgot about the series.

Plus Half-Life 3 would have to have new characters/story and would have nothing to do with Half-life 2.

yes from keeping half life 2 "stale" but in this case it would be a brand new game with the story continuing from hl2.

that wouldnt be stale in the slightest unless they somehow managed to make it **** and/or with no real improvements in the gameplay.

and half life 3 wouldnt have to, thats the point. who says it has to? at this point only they have, im asking if you think that should have not been the case.

Well since half-life2 had nothing to do with half-life 1, it would make since that Half-life 3 would start off with something completely different.

If Half-Life 3 were the episodes put together everyone would complain about how dated the gameplay and graphics are. HL3 would have to be more advanced than HL2, or else everyone would say its a crappy sequal if it were the episodes put together. They want to see the same advancement they saw from HL1 to HL2.

Half-Life 3 im sure is in development by now. Maybe not game design, but i promise you its engine is hard at work. Well see it in about 2 years id guess, which means the episodes worked rather well as a stopgap.

Remember, programmers ARE NOT game designers. Theyve been doing other things this whole time.

i dont mind it, i probably prefer it that they keep doing this episodic thing, i dont wanna wait another five years for another half life game, no. Episode Two was so high in quality, i hardly cared about the length.

...and be released in say 1 or 2 years from now?

Minglis

It would have taken them six years, like their previous two full games.

Anyway, no, I think that they made a good choice in finishing HL2's story with episodic content - it means that HL3 can take place in an entirely new setting with an entirely new story...instead of waiting for a few years for the second half of HL2's story.

*Edit* Oh, and they're almost certainly working on HL3 while making the episodes.

The flaw in your logic is when you say you would get HL3 in two years time. The time gap between HL1 and HL2 was 6 years so it's likely that would be the same between HL2 and HL3.

Another reason they may have done this is because they want to have a bigger distinction between HL2 and HL3. If you look at how different HL2 was to HL1, and imagine that the three episodes had become HL3... HL3 would feel decidedly samey.

you obviously didnt read what i said.

and about my prediction for when the game would be released being a flawed statement, it was just a guess and its not the point.

that said your basing that fact on the how long it took them to get hl2 out, there's no real pattern based on one game. either way its not the point.

my god this isnt that complicated a question. no i do no mean exact replicas of e1, e2 and e3 combined into one and made as hl3, i mean an actual sequel with the story of them combined.

bahi shouldnt make threads in the system wars section....

Valve is probably waiting for a way that they can distinguish Half Life 3 from Half Life 2. Right now there's probably not a system strong enough to do that (Unless they wanted to make you buy a 5,000 dollar computer) so their just doing episodes to delay it. I don't mind though, I liked episode 2 a lot.
