[QUOTE="WhoaNellie32"]I've never played a Half-Life game ever. People always talk like its one of the best games ever made. I personally find it really hard to believe its on the considered same level as Halo and Bioshock, and I say that only because that guy with the glasses just seems scrawny, nerdy, and completely un-video game-protagonist-like. In any case, can't wait to finally see what all this hype is about...PC360Wii

are you serious....Half Life was a reveloutionary game.....

and if you actually playedthe game...you would have know that A....gordon freeman is a scientest B.....he never speaks in the game AT ALL C.....You never see him in the game.

that was a completly pathetic post.

Like I said, I never have played the game. I don't know a damn thing about it. In fact, when it came out I was in college, loving every minute of it, and couldn't care less about the video game world. That era in which Half Life 2 was made video gaming was completely null and void to me. I will see what it all about now when it comes out for the 360.

A pathetic post? Haha. There isn't a damn thing a person could say on system wars that would get me the least bit riled up. Ha.

Whoa a Scientist with glasses, ... never mind that hes not exactly scrawny to begin with ..... you base a game on its lead character? A character that doesnt speak once throught the series...

Ah you must be the Typical "Frat Boy" steroe type over the 360 ...

Half-Life 2 was made in 2004 ... 3 years ago and your saying its a different Era? What?

Yep. You pegged me. A frat boy to a "T". Nevermind that I was busy with enjoying my newly-found freedom from my parents (which is an enjoyable novelty for anyone first going to college), meeting new people, studying my ass off, and busy paving the way for the rest of my life.

Please. Don't take this stuff so seriously. I don't know anything about this game. I'm excited to find out what it is about. I love video games now, and although there was a period in my life in which I didn't pay much attenton to video games means absoluetly nothing. hmmmm hmmmm, yessssss, pathetic post, indeeeeed..... LOSER

I can finally see what is so great about HL2. Never played the game, nor the first one. I refrained from getting it on the xbox because I knew it would suck.

I am mad that HALO is even in the same text space as Half Life & Bioshock. Do people honestly think that HALO is up there with HALF LIFE / HALF LIFE 2 When it comes to sheer innovations & story? Same about Bioshock.

I think its being stuffed down our throats so much (advertising wise) people are forgetting its the biggest videogame release.. of a good shooter...

MadExponent

not to give halo props but wow, have you played the half-lifes? Half-Life 2really isn't that innovative, about the only thing innovative is the gravity gun, and the story was bland.

The Half-Life series is easily the best FPS franchise PERIOD.

you keep saying stuff and not explaining why its the best FPS franchise and all the other things you've said. back up your statements with REASONS

you cared enough to reply to his post. how can you find it hard to believe its considred on the same level as halo and bioshock if you haven't even played the game...a pathetic post indeed.

This is such a typical response. "if you cared enough to..." "if you didn't care you wouldn't come to this site..." yadda yadda yadda. That is just a complete waste of BULL. PALEASE. This site is great simply because it is a concise source for all the latest news, rumors, and miscellaneous crap. Simply put, its a fun one-stop site for getting the latest scoop on games. Coincidently, it actually has some semi-entertaining debates now and again.

First off, because you're probably 15 and you have an inflated idea of your own intellect and effect on others, I never said it WAS on the same level as those two games. In fact, I found it difficult to believe in the first place. Second, I never said it wasn't possible for Half-Life 2 to be amazing, in fact, I pretty much assumed it was amazing by the way people talked about it here. All I know is that at this given moment I don't know two flying ***** about this game. It could be the second coming of christ for all I know. I WANT TO PLAY IT AND EMBRACE ITS GREATNESS.

Oh, the scientist dude doesn't play any role in the game at all? Well, hell if I ever knew that. All I know is that guy was the only definitive image I ever had of the game in my mind EVER because he's always found in people's sigs or avatars or wherever. Its just ridiculous. You're getting mad for ridiculous reasons. You're pathetic for insuling my intelligence.

Indeed.

no question.

Heck even fanboys would be hard pressed to disagree.

Heck HL2 is still the best FPS...... If Bioshock couldent trump it then I have strong doubts about Halo 3

Here i'll jump in.

It has shaped the genre, and revolutionised it - more than Doom, it introduced a huge number of groundbreaking innovations to the genre, that almost every FPS following borrows, and is still the most compelling FPS experience to this day.

No FPS comes close to the Half Life series.

I'd just like to mention something that I noticed recently concerning Half-Life in this thread.

I really love Half-Life 2. It's a fantastic game. But for a long time, I never understood why people love the Gravity Gun so much. It's cool, but it isn't much of a weapon except in the end of the game. Picking up washing machines doesn't feel as efficient as shooting someone in the face with bullets.

Recently, I pre-ordered Orange Box over Steam, and got Episode 1 in the package. Episode 1 is way too short, but what it has is all absolutely excellent. And for close to half the episode, you don't even have a conventional gun. Despite this, the gameplay is still very fun, and has plenty of action.

Valve is able to continually mix up the gameplay with puzzles and other sections that require the Gravity Gun, and without it, Half-Life 2 would have been a much more straightforward and less interesting game. Half-Life 2 is very varied, and that's one of the many reasons it is such an excellent title.

/\ Methinks HL2s pacing and game design is what makes it such a great FPS. Twas the same with HL1.

Hell when you go to the chapter selection of HL2, the huge variety of chapters is astounding. The game is bloody massive, and varies so much in each location.

Thats one reason why Half Life 2 has trumped others FPSs. Pacing, game design, and variety.

I mean check out the chapters!

Point Insertion

This chapter is your introduction into City 17. You step off the train bewildered and then you get reintroduced to a few old friends and a few new ones too. Don't piss off the Civil Protection Team!

"A Red Letter Day"

This chapter will introduce you to literally all of the old crew from Black Mesa and take you to Dr. Kleiner's laboratory where you also catch a glimpse of his "head humping" pet, Hedy Lemarr.
Route Kanal

Aptly named as this chapter could be considered as quite a pain in the teeth, this chapter introduces you to the canal levels in the game and gives you a taste of what the Manhacks are like to battle with.
Water Hazard

This chapter involves a lot of time and fun on the "Mudskipper" (air boat). Also in this chapter you will encounter the Combine Helicopter. This is an adrenaline packed chapter.
Black Mesa East

It's not quite Black Mesa Research Facility but it does the trick. This chapter is pretty short but it gets you re-acquainted with Eli Vance. You also get to meet Dr. Judith Mossman and Alyx's pet, Dog. You also learn how to use the Manipulator.
"We Don't go to Ravenholm..."

Ravenholm was once a nice village but since the invasion it's become heavily infested with zombies and headcrabs. Keeping them all in check is Father Grigori, village priest turned "survivalist monk".
Highway 17

Here you'll obtain the use of the Scout Car and meet such characters as Colonel Odessa Cubbage. There'll be road-side fights aplenty, try and stay in the Scout Car and avoid driving off the end of the cliff!
Sandtraps

Antlions thrive around this area, as do Combine Soldiers. The coast is riddled with "thumpers" though that will deter any Antlions. You will also have the pleasure of meeting the Antlion Guard here.
Nova Prospekt

Nova Prospekt was once a prison for the most horrific criminals ever to walk the earth. Now, even more evil, the Combine have turned the old prison into a jail, torture and slaughter house. You know, just to make the citizens feel comfortable.
Entanglement

This chapter is still based in Nova Prospekt but it is in the basement of the prison. Alyx is accompanying you for some of this chapter.
Anticitizen One

The time has arrived, all the citizens have started to revolt against Dr. Breen and the Combine. You're right in the thick of City 17 and you must meet up with Barney at the rendezvous point.
"Follow Freeman!"

Even more fun and games in the streets of City 17 as you continue onwards towards the base of the Citadel. In this chapter expect lots of fights with lots of Striders.
Our Benefactors

This chapter takes you deep into the Citadel and with only a modified Manipulator gun you have to battle through a myriad of Combine Elite soldiers.
Dark Energy

You now come face to face with Dr. Breen and you embark on a final showdown with your latest arch-enemy. He's trying to escape, you have to stop him.

Dammit this thread makes me want to boot up HL2 again.

I wouldent dare to speak of Oblivion has compared to its other RPG bretheran - it sucks.

And Bioshock. Hell no its better than HL2...... By a freaking mile. And I was expecting it to be better prior to its release, and after playing the demo.
