Hot take #1: Playstation 5 tempest engine 3D audio is GARBO

@IMAHAPYHIPPO: You honestly haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about. 3D audio is spatial sound. Spatial sound has been around for decades, and countless manufacturers have made spatial sound bars that project the sound upwards to imitate ceiling speakers. Sony are promising that same result with bog standard stereo tv speakers, as well as in standard headsets.

Put a pair of standard headphones on, go to YouTube and search for binaural stereo. It will sound much wider than stereo, but the main point is that it is no way as good as having physical speakers in the ceiling and using Atmos, which ps5 doesn’t support.

@briguyb13: I’m sure.....Pulse 3D are stereo headsets. Tuned to the tempest engine, but stereo headsets nonetheless. As mentioned above, put on a stereo headset and search on YouTube for binaural sound demos.

The pulse headset will sound better than a cheap stereo headset or buds, but the technique works on all headsets.

And this is the review for the Pulse 3D. Its bottom of the barrel quality that Quak thinks is amazing cuz he doesn't know any better 😊

The reason its selling so well is because Sony has brainwashed the clueless kids such as @phlop_spencer into thinking that having "3D" on the box, it will have better sound on a console that has a 3D sound engine. Its just hype for the clueless masses, nothing else.

Is kinda funny how easy it is to sell gamers mediocre shit lol. Gaming headsets, gaming chairs, etc.

Should come out with some overpriced esport sneakers, throw some marketing buzzwords on them, get rich.

Maybe some gaming shades, "SEE MORE FRAMES WITH THESE SICK FRAMES!". Slap some LEDs on those bad boys and rake it in.

A lot of people don't seem to realize that the point is to give everyone a somewhat similar experience at the ground level without needing to spend hundreds to thousands more to get it. A better pair of headphones compatible with all the features will always sound better because they are better... nothing else to it really. I haven't heard the sound of the XSX yet, but everything I've heard from the PS5 including from my soundbar, sub, speakers, and headset sound great. It's definitively easier to pick up on sounds like footsteps and pinpoint where they are coming from. I'm not so sure that's a good thing though since it just leads to even more camping... Either way, sound quality isn't an issue even if you don't get the same quality as a $10,000 set of equipment with all the bells and whistles... but once again, I think that's the point.

Well, with your soundbar, sub and speakers, you're not getting the 3D audio, and only stereo, which sounds excellent. I have nothing against stereo on the ps5. Its the overhyped 3D audio that is complete trash. And when it comes to headphones, you have a ton of quality audiophile grade headphones for sub $200. So in reality, getting good sound is not expensive at all.

@hardwenzen: I get that, and I play with my headphones on 99% of the time anyways so my wife doesn't yell at me to turn it down.. lol.

All I'm saying is that it sounds great either way and the sound quality from even just my $70 "get me by for now" headset has a very noticeable increase in audio fidelity and pinpointing specific sounds. It's pretty cool and easily sounds better than the $300 and $400 headsets I had with my PS4. That is pretty cool to me, and I'm looking into getting another pair of headphones soon for the PS5 and XSX. I'm open to suggestions since I'm not really up to date or in the know about the best products. That said, just because I don't know doesn't mean I wouldn't like a few suggestions or wouldn't love to have audiophile level headphones. If you or anyone else has some suggestions in the $400 or less category with loud clear sound (half deaf from so many gunshots and explosions from earlier in life) and great bang for the buck then I'm all ears (puns intended and all that shit.. lol).

I'm not pretending to know what's best, just saying what I've experienced so far sounds great and it's easy to tell it's better overall than last gen.

Give me a list of the best options and I'll look into them all. I didn't really know where to ask... so this thread seems like a good place. Brand doesn't really matter all that much to me, what matters to me is sound quality and the ability to make sure they get loud enough to where I can hear them. I've had headphones in the past that even while fully maxed out on sound were difficult to hear and I certainly don't want that. I'd rather have to keep them off full volume because they are too loud rather than to wish the full volume was a lot louder.

Any suggestions? Like I said before, $400 or less... I don't want my wife to get upset (I mean she'd probably let me get whatever I want, but you know how it goes).. lol.

That just tells me how much Sony brainwash people. 3d audio doesn't work on soundbars, subs or speakers. There is also no timeframe for when Sony will implement it, if at all.

Pretty much. It's how I can tell if something is good or not. Does it come with 7 "features", awesome changeable colors and is called Super Ultra Gamer Pro Mega Striker Awesome Frag Master? Yeah, get something else.

Isn't that kind of true in most consumer aspects of life? I mean, most every day people aren't technical experts and such. I've long considered myself somewhat of an audiophile and even I thought these things needed decoders or proper hardware to work correctly.

I think it's simply a case of tech moving faster than your average consumer can keep up with, and that folks who are ahead of the tech curve tend to be very young people or devoted tech nerds.

I tend to find it funny when posters on boards like this act like it's normal to know every detail of all this stuff, then when I go outside to the real world there's like a 90 degree shift and that most people will look at you funny when talking about this stuff in person.

Speaking personally, I'm just an older gamer who is long out of touch with current tech mumbo jumbo and I wouldn't have it any other way, as long as I can keep up with console and handheld gaming enough to make decent decisions about my hobby, but since I don't know when, I've had to hide this nerd hobby from average friends who wouldn't know a bit from a teraflop, or whether or not xbox games play on playstation systems ( I seriously had a friend ask me that one time).

Me saying the sound is great is regarding everything as a whole, which is why I listed everything, you can see that part in bold, me saying it's easier to hear specific things and the direction from which they are coming from is obviously with a headset which I'm wearing at all times while playing online and listening for footsteps since otherwise it would be pointless (you can refer to that sentence by the underline) to wear one other than to stay quiet... They are independent statements and in separate sentences. Everyone knows that the 3D audio is through a headset, so pretending to act as though I need to spell everything out is asinine. I was just saying the audio sounds good in any capacity and I haven't had any problem with muddy or muffled sound. I hope it isn't ever a problem, but for now everything is great.

In case you haven't been paying attention I own and play on everything under the sun. I'm trying to find an XSX and waiting until March for the VCS. I'll also probably get the KFConsole and I own the Ouya, Shield, Stadia, and Switch as well. Not to mention the laptop I'm on in which I play PC games and my tablet and phone if we need to go that far. I'm not brainwashed by anything or what anyone says.. I buy and play what I want regardless of what someone says.. that's why I get everything and buy a lot of games, so I can be my own judge. I'm not limited to trying to shill for a single company or have any need to get all butthurt when someone points out flaws or something better... it's the best of all worlds. PS5's audio sounds great all around and the 3D audio definitely makes a difference while playing online. I'm sure XSX won't be much if any different. I have equally talked up SONY, MS, and Nintendo just as I've equally bashed them. I give my opinions based off my own experiences.

Oh, and just for the record... if you think anyone is buying the PS5 because it's touting 3D audio you need to go outside and get some fresh air. Not many people are going to give a shit or even know what that means outside of forum dwellers and people trying to keep up with the industry. The vast majority of consumers will just buy whatever their friends are on or whatever console that has the games they are looking for. If someone was sold on the XSX or XSS and they see 3D audio on the PS5 box they will not be swayed to buy it instead.

Regardless, your point about everybody knowing that 3d sound only works through headphones is wrong. On this thread alone there's people confused about which headsets work, and many will look at the "3d audio" blurb and not know that it only works on headsets.

I went the other way and got an xsx first. I have an Atmos setup (only 2 ceiling speakers) and have been using it on my x1x. My daughter inherited my old X1 as well as my PS4. My laptop handles basic strategy games through gamepass, and I'll get a ps5 when a slim version comes out...aesthetically I can't handle the looks and colour as it is.

There were points in time when I was looking to buy gaming chairs and gaming headsets. Didn't take much looking around to realize that there are better options even within a similar price range. I went in knowing nothing, came out with great stuff.

Just the other day, ordered a new monitor. Been about 5 years since I bought a gaming specific monitor, much of the landscape has changed. Spent some time going over articles, watching various Youtube reviews and comparisons, ultimately came out with exactly what I wanted. Also saved myself from making another purchase that will make more sense down the road.

I'm not some tech expert. I just look past the marketing layer to figure out what's what. All the info is out there, why wouldn't I take the time to make sure my money is well spent? I don't keep up with the ever changing tech, I just make sure I'm up to speed when it's time to spend.

I guess I just assumed that everyone around these parts knew more than average consumers. On that note however, I know what they say about assuming, so on that note I apologize and I will be more clear with things in posts in the future (usually I do just that and I am usually blamed of going into too much detail.. but there is a first for everything.. lol). I just know most of the people here and the ones that seem more knowledgeable about games. Trolls, haters, and fake boys aren't hard to sort out and never wind up lasting too long.

What does that mean? Atmos is scripted? There are games with Atmos, which generate the positions in real time.

You don't know what quality means when Pulse 3D is what you're wearing. When this is the best you've seen, you simply cannot comprehend what's clean sound.

The sound quality could be extremely muffled/compressed, and you're still gonna tell others that it sounds great because 1- Its from Sony, and you're not allowed to say anything negative about them. 2- This is as good as you've ever heard. Low standards.

It depends on your dac. PS5 accepts class1 dacs but not class2. Mine was a class2, so i had to buy a usb to optical converter. Works perfectly with it.

Nice, yeah scooped it earlier this week. Only went at it for an hour or two, but definitely enjoying it so far.

A random YouTube video I saw talked about the whole THX craze and how George Lucas marketed the shit out of it but there was never any real quality standard or way for studios to optimize for a higher standard or anything, it was just a label and audio quality was all over the map, basically quality was determined more by talents of studios and their publishing. I am guessing same thing here. It will only be as good as the people who are utilizing the feature.
