I ask this because mainly of Final Fantasy IV DS. After watching the TGS trailer (http://youtube.com/watch?v=n-Sr9G8XWEU) I'm surprized to see voice acting going on. Which makes me extremely excited for this game. But are DS games that big on the whole storage capacity? Are they limited? Just curious because for voice acting, I thought that took a lot of memory.

I don't know how big they are but when I saw the trailer earlier I was in shock. I never thought DS games could be that cinematic.

There are larger catridges now that can hold a lot more. I don't know the size of either carts, but neither is exactly huge.

Up until ASH they have been capped at 128 MB. Now, it seems the new limit is 256. Actually, alot of the new DS RPGS like Tales of innocence, ASH, Luminous Arc (HOPEFULLY DQ IX) and as you said FFIV have quite a bit of VA. For reference, a PSP game is usually around 300-400 MB. There are some much larger, though.

I read in Official Nintendo Magazine that FF3 uses a 1 GB DS cart. I think it depends on whatever the game requires.

The biggest game is ASH, clocking in at 256mb. For comparison, Phantom Hourglass is 64mb, Puzzle Quest is 16mb, and Hotel Dusk and FF: III are both 128mb.

No wonder I can't find Hotel Dusk for under $30. I expect ASH will be around $40.

256 MB now. ASH is the first game that size.

The ActImagine codec is used widely in DS games, it's got some seiously great compression.

i saw the same article too i think. however they said 1Gb, or 1 gigabit. thats the same as 128MB.

as far as i know most games come on 128MB carts, but there are bigger carts available to devs. i think i heard somewhere that resident evil DS has a 256MB cart. the game also has full voice overs (that VO thats so bad its good :P) as far as i know.

makes ya wonder about the possibilities of a FF7 port to DS in the future.

Depends on what SD cart they are using to make the game. It can got for 256 Mb to 1 Gb. But the cost of the game will rise though because those SD carts cost money. I'm sure they can fit Final Fantasy VII onone of the largestDS carts, but they may cost much money......

What? FF uses a 1 gigaBIT card which is equal to 128 gigaBYTES. Usually gigabit (Gb) is only used when someone wants to make sometime sound big.

The memory size of a ds cart is 256.512 MB. It takes 512 kbs for the game to make it's save file and the maximum size of a ds game is 256 MB. I am pretty sure about.

It depends on the game. Some are 8 Megabytes (Big Brain Academy), some are 16 (Brain Training), some are 32 (Phoenix Wright, Tetris DS), most are 64 MB (Castlevanias, Ninja Gaiden DS, Zelda...) , and some are 128 MB (TWEWY, FFIV).

up to 256 megs voice acting is normally sporadic but games like layton and tales of hearts have a lot length isn't really an issue, most DS games will last you a very long time. Longer than th average console game and half the price

No. There is a difference between a Gb and a GB. Gigabit and Gigabyte I believe.

Uhh..you mean 128 megabytes, right?

And yeah, it's all marketing. ISPs in particular do that crap all the time (they market transfer rates in units of megabits/sec, not megabytes/sec)

Edit: Wow, this is an old thread.

i think you read it wrong. i think what the magazine said was 2 gigaBITS not gigaBYTES. 8BIT = 1BYTE so the capacity of the card is actually 256MB.
