JRPGs really need to evolve to stay alive in the future.
What are some improvements they should make?
I think they should ditch the girly effeminate guy characters. I hate them.

nope they can stay the way they are, because thats what makes them unique. Androvinus
FF13 was horrible. If you took away the graphics its actually 100 steps backwards from FF 7, and ps1 game.
JRPG games are starting to bore me...Im a big fan of Final Fantasy and KH but when FF 13 came out I was so pissed of the gameplay. They should add more City where you can enter and talk to.Choices of Good or bad like Western RPGs. But when KH 3 comes out im sure JRPGs will get back on their feet.AznKSor
The reason you hate FF XIII is because they have changed it in some misguided attempt to have wider appeal, and failed. If anything i think they need to get back to their roots but start hiring some professional writers for the story.
1) Drop the awful kiddie characters. No more girls in skirts and lingerie, boy-men with dumb hair and whiney personalities, or silly characters added for "comedic effect".
2) Recognize the "game" part of "video game"...too much focus on cutscenes.
3) Ease up on the dramatics...it's to the point of silliness. The crying, whining, and overreacting makes playing/watching these games unbearable and cringe worthy.
4) Take notice of western/european systems like item systems, combat, and other areas.

so you are basing this solely off of FF13 ?[QUOTE="crusadernm"][QUOTE="Androvinus"]nope they can stay the way they are, because thats what makes them unique. Androvinus

I agree.
a different art direction? none of that anime look alike stuff. and deeper customizations for skills, equipments, weapons. ect.
no over dramatic characters. turn base combat! cause i love me some turn base :D
Not develop for gimped consoles (360 obviously and Wii in a way)
Locutus_Picard
ya they should make FF exclusive to the PC
no not really but FF is considered one of the pinnacles of JRPGs are they not?FF13 was doing something different. you want it to be FF7 all over again ? if it was ff7, people would complain that they just copied the ff7 formula. you want to change all the things that make jrpgs what they are. the kiddy characters the huge swords, the light hearted spirit. and you are behaving like all jrpgs are the same. they definately are not.crusadernm
FF13 wasn't THAT bad....but it's a darn shame we waited for over 5 years to see one of the biigest next-gen JRPG's only to get gimped by 360 development.
I didnt know I had stalkers...hi, pleased to meet you!
In the same topic(s), people confirmed that prebuilds of FFXIII way back in 2006/07 looked actually better and had more environments than the final build that was released in 09.
Guess what happened between 06 and 09...
THey need to grow up... and by that I mean, they either need to stop it with the convenient angle's in cutscenes that just happen to show the young girls panties.... they have two options imo.... either jump in, and give us T&A... or just cut it out altogether.
This is one of many ways they could improve the genre.
Another is obvious... cut the amount of emo, whinyness from little boys down by 99%. Also, there are more than 2 hair styles in existance... hair styles don't consist of just "spiky" and "hanging in my face emo'ness"
It should stay the same to spite all the haters!siLVURcross
If Westerners tell the Japanese how to improve their RPGs, how do Westerners feel if the Japanese tell them how to improve Western games?
I think the turn based element needs to be abandoned ,not completely that would alienate a lot of players, but with bigger franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. It makes battles a bit of a chore in my opinion. For the record Im a huge fan of the Tales of Vesperia system. Im happy with the storys they weave... there is ALWAYS something that makes you go "holy crap... didnt see that coming". What they DONT need to do is copy Western RPG's, though I adore them, the JRPG's have a certain charm about them...bellsmye1FF13 isn't turn based.

Yeah so did Killzone 2. I am guessing Microsoft had something to do with that.

Stalker? No, apparently I just have a good memory.
On to the subject at hand however, is there any proof that content was removed *SOLELY* because of the 360? I've been in these debates before, and no proof (and I use the term "proof" lightly) has ever been forthcoming.
You're just making assumptions, which have no base in a debate talking about facts.
A conclusive post providing proof, beyond a reasonable doubt would be sufficient to prove me wrong. If you want to try, go ahead, and I will be willing to accept i'm wrong... You know, unless you post complete garbage ;)
Not an option. They need to have black and white choices, fetch quests which require you to find 10 thingamajigs, Lord of the Rings inspirations, and sex and romance! Wooo! /sarcasmJapanese RPG Developers can keep doing what they have in the past.

Have narrative exposition occur in-game, no more turn based combat, and full character customization would be a big plus in my view. Plus, more dark, morally complex characters would be a nice change from the plucky types the current games seem to be so fond of.Have narrative exposition occur in-game, no more turn based combat, and full character customization would be a big plus in my view. So... you just want them to be WRPGs. :|
Here is a crazy suggestion, how about you and people who want stuff like that just... play WRPGs? :?
Also, do you know just how few of these games even have turn based combat now, seriously?
The characters for RPGs aren't cliche. Atleast they have personalities. I don't see how any of the characters from first person shooters have something better than the characters from RPGs.
EDIT: What is wrong with physical appearance. Let me say this:
FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS HAVE MEN IN ARMORED ALIEN SUITS FROM OUTER SPACE. THEY HAVE SHORT HAIR JUST LIKE REAL PEOPLE.
The whole point of physical appearance is style of course alot of JRPGs have alot of girls wearing min skirts and all that but still i could say the same about first person shotoers, and WRPGs.

Yes.
I don't play JRPGs because they are not my "cup of tea", so to speak. However, I think the people who play them enjoy them because they are different than WRPGs. To each his/her own. Further, I wouldn't wantWRPG developers to try and emulate JRPGs.
As long as they still have an anime style, they will never improve. Anime is one of my most repetitve and exaggerated forms of animation out there. The girlish-looking boys, the long pink hair, giant swords, and overly expresive little sounds the characters make. Frankly, it's garbage next to something as stunning and intricate as Mass Effect's incredible style and design. That's why it will never touch WRPGs.
