How come PC gamers in general think all JRPGs are linear and like Final Fantasy?

[QUOTE="tagyhag"][QUOTE="Vandalvideo"] Mass Effect is a prime example of Blade Runner tweaking. :| Witcher is also a huge tweaking of Tolkein. Seriously, do you even know what the Bladerunner and Tolkein archetypes are?! What isn't Bladerunner is post apocylptica. The fact of the matter is that I do not see very much variety in the settings of stories. Bebi_vegeta

The way I see it (In general) WRPG's: Less variety, better stories and characters. JRPG's: More variety, worse stories and characters.

I think it's the other way around...

It´s always a matter of personal opinion, both genres have good stories and good characters.

It´s the gameplay that diferentiates them the most.

Less variety? Are you joking? JRPGs have no variety. Meanwhile, check the different types of settings in WRPGs from Fallout, to Mass Effect, to Jade Empire, to KOTOR, to Planescape, etc. The only way you could think otherwise is if you don't realize that BioWare made so many games the same because they were in the same universe.ChrisJ2004

Hardly. I've played almost every JRPG in existence and they definitely all feel the same after a while. WRPGs have far more diversity.

ChrisJ2004

I seriously doubt you've nearly played every JRPG in existence.

The Dark Spire is a great example of why people don't like JRPG's as much as they used to >.> Of course, there are plenty of refreshing, original JRPG's. Most of them are just too obscure to capture the attention of self-proclaimed hardcore gamers.

Did someone make this thread before or am I losing my sanity? To answer your question TC its because the more popular mainstream JRPGS feel that way.

Espada12

This. The most popular JRPG's are in fact, linear.

Is it weird if I'm a PC gamer mostly, but I'd pick JRPG as my favorite genre? >_> But no, on subject, like has been said, its easier to generalize than to be specific.

At first I thought it was going to be a Phantasy Star/Monster Hunter type JRPG where you can make your own heroines (and customize yourself) to be in your party.. You would have a visual novel side of the game also where you can talk with the girls, experience things with them and develop your relationship overtime then a H-Scene appears.

But I was sadly mistaken.

Though they did make Sexy Beach 3 which was really fun to mod...

All their games sound like nice ideas if you bend them into ways you want it to go though, I just feel bad for the guys who buy their games.

Mm, I liked the concept of Artificial Girl 3 (Haven't played the prior ones) but I just felt...it didn't go too well.

Yeah, if someone can make a dating sim (with cell shaded graphics) with A.I that acually responds to you and uses some sort of program like vocaloid so it doesn't need Seiyū.. It'd be a step up from Love Plus.. You know instead of me following and hugging a girl for her to like me.

Oh it's terrible. When I first ran it, no character models showed up, and I was randomly in some battle. Had no idea what I was doing, next thing you know, I think my character dies and a sex scene occurs. Confusing to the max. Sound still works though. :P

To be honest, it's because 99% of JRPGs that are localized for my language ARE linear and just like FF. I'm sorry to only be able to base my opinion on games that I can UNDERSTAND but being a long time JRPG and RPG fan in general I can easily admit that JRPGs have become STALE. The entire genre needs to go through a shake up. My biggest issue isn't the linearity of JRPGs. It's the piss poor stories that make no sense and/or the inclusion of a simply horrid battle system.

I was going to answer something similiar, being that WRPG are all about hack n Slash and Oblivion clones, and JRPG are all turned based or/and linear.

quick question about Sakura Wars... does it require any grinding, or an faq guide? I'm thinking about checking it out, but I'm constantly disapointed in JRPG's, and have yet to finish one.

I'm a PC gamer, and even though I prefer WRPGs by infinity, I don't think that all JRPGs are linear and like FF. A lot of the JRPGs I played back when I was younger were different from each other. I never got a FF vibe when playing Suikoden, or Chrono Cross.

Meh.. most games (including RPG's or all types), are in fact liniar. While some are more than others and some games take a pride in being as open ended as possible, saying that wRPG's are non liniar is hardely true.

Second. So what if a game is liniar?

As for jRPG's I've been giving them a try with relativly little luck. Can someone recommend a good / interesting jRPG for either the PC or X360. I resently tried Tales of Vesparia and Star Ocean: Last Hope and felt both were.. really rather boring, Eternal Sonata were somewhat more interesting (I thought mixing in the classical music angle was quite clever). I'm not sure if I'm just missing the good stuff due to my ignorence when it comes to the genre?

Sakura Wars is one of the top 5 most popular RPG franchises in Japan and is one of the top ten most popular game series in Japan.

Also all of the first Sakura Wars made it in top 100 greatest games of all time list by Famitsu Magazine(Biggest gaming Magazine in Japan).

Pretty much every Japanese magazine or website I know gave all Sakura Wars game(except the 5th)a perfect score,an editor's choice award, andevem made it in the top 100 games of all times lists of these Japanese gaming magazines and sites/The fifht(considered the worst in the series by llong time fans) surprisingly got near perfect scores in Famitsu and every other Japanese gaming magazin and site despite being the weakest entry.

Most elitist fans of WRPGs think all JRPGs are like FF.

Yandere

so if people don't like JRPG they are automatically WRPG elitist fan? And along with PC elitist I don't know why the word is invented

I mean, if a JRPG lover bashes WRPG, he/she is doing justice, but when a wrpg doesn't like JRPG, he's a elitist fan?

How about this, Most elitist fans of JRPG think are WRPGs are broken buggy mess huge lands with no story and ugly characters.

Well start by defining variety...

Bebi_vegeta

Aesthetically speaking.

As in, Borderland is asthetically different then fallout 3?

Well, if we're THAT vague then JRPG's DEFINETLY have more variety.

sounds like ar tonelico with more diving and less fighting. personally i thought ar tonelico was a good mix of the 2, i don't know if i'd want to spend the majority of my gaming time trying to make cartoon anime chicks like me. i'd rather turn the game off and go hang out with a real chick that likes me.

[QUOTE="Next-Gen-Tec"]The majority are. However, the question is: why do people (on SW) generally think linear games are bad thing?

it isn't a bad thing for games in general. though my preference for an RPG is to be able to make more choices than just skills and items.

All right, ALL of the FF titles are varied. ALL of the Persona titles are varied. All of the Tales titles are varied, etc etc. :P

Do they look the same? Heck yeah, but they sure as hell have more varied settings compared to each other as opposed to Borderlands and Fallout 3.

Well I taught we we're talking about Aesthetically and then you're talking about gameplay...
